“It is very important that we have the support of the Central Macedonia Region but also that Amphipolis has been selected to receive Interreg funds so that work can continue. In this sense, we believe new impetus is being given to the Amphipolis project,” Koniordou said.

Besides being the largest tomb discovered in the country, the Amphipolis site produced among others sculptures of sphinxes and caryatids, mosaics and coins depicting Alexander the Great… but also scientific and political controversy as to actual historic timeframe of the burial ground.

#Milos: The #Cyclades' Hidden Gem, #Aegean_sea #Greece

#Milos: The #Cyclades' Hidden Gem, #Aegean_sea #Greece | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it

Milos island is the most Western island of the Cyclades and in my opinion, has the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen. It’s also known as the island where the Statue of Aphrodite/Venus was found. The most convenient way to travel this Greek island is by renting a vehicle. We decided to rent a dune buggy to explore for the 2 days we were there. In less than an hour, we came across this beautiful view.

One of the places that took my breath away is Sarakiniko. Located on the north-east side of the island, Sarakiniko is a beach that is made of volcanic eroded white rocks that make you feel like you’re on the moon.
Cave swimming was another unforgettable experience on Milos. Kleftiko is a complex of volcanic rocks that used to be pirates’ hide out spot. Unfortunately, it’s only reachable by boat, so we took a local excursion, Armi Sea Excursions, to see this beauty. We got to jump off from the bow of the boat into the icy waters and swam through the caves!
The capital of the island is a little, quaint town called Plaka. We decided to check it out before the sunset, and found it deserted. If you want to take a peek at traditional greek architecture and homes without the touristy vibes of Santorini, this is the place.
We finished off our short Milos trip with a sunset dinner by the harbour. Mikros Apoplous had delicious classic greek food with impeccable views. This was one of the most friendly restaurants we ate at during our trip to Greece, and they gave us complimentary wine! If you are thinking about visiting the Cycladic islands, Milos, “the island of colour,” can’t be missed.

A World of Emotions

A World of Emotions | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
Bringing to vivid life the emotions of the people of ancient Greece, and prompting questions about how we express, control, manipulate, or simulate feelings in our own society, the Onassis Cultural Center New York presents the path-breaking exhibition A World of Emotions: Ancient Greece, 700 BC – 200 AD.

On view exclusively at the Onassis Cultural Center New York, the exhibition brings together more than 130 masterpieces from some of the finest museums in the world including the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum Athens, the Louvre, the British Museum, the Vatican Museums, among many others, to explore the ideas and attitudes of people in classical antiquity toward emotion and the ways in which the emotions were depicted, revealing how some are strikingly familiar to us and some shockingly alien. Although ancient Greece is often said to have been flooded with the light of reason, A World of Emotions lays bare the far different reality addressed in the Iliad, whose very first word is menis: wrath.

Developed by a team of distinguished guest curators over the course of more than four years, the exhibition features vase paintings, sculptures (ranging from life-size statues from the Acropolis to relief carvings from cemeteries), theatrical masks, amulets, coins, and votive offerings, among other artifacts from the early 7th century BC (the traditional date of the Iliad) to the late 2nd century AD (the beginning of the end of pagan antiquity). Many will be on view in the United States for the first time, and some will be seen for the first time outside Greece. Together, these objects provide a timely opportunity to think about the role of feelings in our own personal, social, and political lives, while helping to advance the relatively new field of the history of emotions.

Low Demand in Turkey Diverts Interest to the Mediterranean for TUI - GTP Headlines

Low Demand in Turkey Diverts Interest to the Mediterranean for TUI - GTP Headlines | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
Low demand for holidays to Turkey and North Africa in the first half of its financial year took a toll on TUI Group’s (TUI)  shares, which dropped by about 5 percent in early trading, after the tourism operator reported its financial results this week.

The slumping demand due to political turmoil in the region was offset by growing interest for Mediterranean destinations such as Spain and Greece, and the Caribbean. The group’s hotels are already 62 percent booked for the summer ahead, 4 percent higher than last year, with holidays to Greece, Bulgaria, Croatia and Cape Verde setting the trend.

TUI reported an 8 percent increase in revenue for the six months to the end of March compared to last year, while customer numbers were up 4 percent. Group losses dropped year on year to 308.6 million euros against a loss of 394.6 million euros last year.

TUI said, however, that it remains on target to increase its growth by at least 10 percent in underlying earnings in its full-year results, along with a 3 percent rise in revenue.

“Our transformation to an integrated tourism business is on track. We are delivering strong growth in our hotel and cruise brands. These two segments contribute half of our operating result on a full year basis,” said TUI chief executive Fritz Joussen.

“The TUI Group is changing quickly – our guidance remains unchanged despite a challenging environment. We reiterate our guidance to deliver at least 10 percent growth in underlying EBITA this year,” Joussen added.

At the same time, the travel group, which was hoping for a special aviation deal, warned that Brexit was growing into a risk and a potentially weak pound was likely to hurt the group over the summer.

 Navagio Beach

Navagio beach is as popular as Myrtos beach.

This stunning and secluded beach is known for its dramatic vertical cliffs, deep blue waters, coarse white sand, and the opportunities for snorkeling around the beach make it one of the finest and best beaches in Greece.

It is quite a remote beach and is accessible only by boat. You will see decaying shipwreck in the middle of the beach that is why it is sometimes called the shipwreck beach.

One important aspect about this beach you need to know is there are no amenities in the beach.

So, you have to bring your own food and drinking water, beach tent, umbrella or canopy. It is a perfect snorkeling site. But there is no arrangement for any water-sports in the beach.
