WeekenGO: Athens Among 'Best Cities in the World to Spend a Weekend' - GTP Headlines

WeekenGO: Athens Among 'Best Cities in the World to Spend a Weekend' - GTP Headlines | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
The study gives an overall score for each city, but also indicates which destinations are best for three different types of travellers: Millennials, families and baby boomers.

London tops the list due to its entertainment options – concerts, theater and cinema – and ranks highly for its museums, accommodation and LGBT friendliness.

Berlin ranks second, recommended by weekenGO as a top destination for millennials.  Vienna comes third and is considered ideal for families. Hamburg and Paris take the fourth and fifth place respectively. Furthermore, the study reveals that Zurich is considered the best weekend destination for baby boomers.

Athens ranks 91st in the top 100. The Greek capital is among the best cities for millenials (98th place), for families (70th) and baby boomers (75th).

Source: weekenGO
“Given the fact that we looked at over 1,000 cities worldwide, every destination that made it to this top 100 ranking ought to be on your weekend getaway bucket list,” said weekenGO co-founder and managing director Tobias Boese.

“Cities at the top of the ranking such as London, Paris and New York are iconic for a reason, but those cities at the bottom of the ranking, such as Casablanca and Belgrade, still have a great deal to offer for an unforgettable weekend trip,” he added.

To highlight which cities are best for millennials, families and baby boomers, the number of social locations such as restaurants, bars and clubs were included, as well as cultural activities such as museums, art galleries and theaters. In addition, safety and tolerance were factored into the research, looking specifically at data on women’s rights and safety, LGBT friendliness and the perception of security.

The study began with the top 1,000 cities determined by the number of visitors, based on data by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The athletes who inspired French director/screenwriter Luc Besson to film The Big Blue on Amorgos in 1988 will be remembered through their depictions on the awards to be bestowed to the top athletes of the Authentic Big Blue 2017 – the first free-diving competition to take place at Agia Anna beach three decades after parts of The Big Blue were filmed there.

'World Tourism Day 2017' to Focus on Sustainable Tourism - GTP Headlines | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
World Tourism Day has been celebrated since 1980 on September 27, the day in which the Statutes of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) entered into force. Peace and Dialogue, Energy, Accessibility, World Heritage and Water and Tourism have been some of the topics tackled on the 37 previous editions of World Tourism Day.

“Last year alone, 1.235 million travelers crossed international borders in one single year. By 2030, this 1.2 billion will become 1.8 billion. The question, as we celebrate World Tourism Day 2017, is how we can enable this powerful global transformative force, these 1.8 billion opportunities, to contribute to make this world a better place and to advance sustainable development in all its three pillars,” said UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai.

Greece Among Top 10 Countries Where Sun Lovers Should Move to - GTP Headlines

Greece Among Top 10 Countries Where Sun Lovers Should Move to - GTP Headlines | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
Based on the insights of more than 14,000 expats from over 191 countries, the survey shows that the weather seems to be play a crucial role in expat’s choice of destination: almost seven out of ten (67 percent) say the climate in their new home was a factor to consider before moving abroad. This means that people are just as likely to think about the weather as they do about the costs of living and general living standards when contemplating their new home (67 percent and 70 percent, respectively).

Malta ranks first on the list of the top 10 most promising destinations for sun lovers and is followed by Costa Rica, Cyprus, Morocco, Spain and Portugal. Greece ranks seventh on the list of countries where sun lovers should move to and is followed by Uganda, Ecuador and Brazil.

Sunny destinations influence the quality of life but also work

A better climate is one of the things Finnish expats moving abroad were looking forward to the most, as nearly seven out of ten (66%) considered it a potential benefit before to relocating — 20 percentage points more than the global average (46%). Other nationalities feeling this way are the Irish (64%), the British (63%), and Russians (62%), whose countries of origin can all be found among the worst countries to move to for the weather.

However, a sunny climate is not everything, as Cyprus, Greece, Portugal, and Brazil are great for relaxing in the sun, but rank among the ten worst countries for working abroad.

“Greece: where finances remain an issue”

According to InterNations, Greece shows that nice weather is not the only thing that counts when moving abroad, as even though 81 percent of expats considered the climate a potential benefit, the country is not very popular among expats in general.

“The country in the Balkans does especially poor in terms of working abroad and personal finance: only a quarter of respondents are generally satisfied with their financial situation, in contrast to 64 percent globally,” InterNations said.

Moreover, 45 percent worry about their job security in Greece, which is more than twice the global average (22 percent).

The survey also noted that Greece also is not a great choice for families, as only 15 percent of expat parents in Greece find the education options numerous and easy to get, and not one respondent agrees completely with this statement.

Countries to Avoid If You Are Looking for the Sun
Besides Kazakhstan and Russia, the bottom ten destinations for sunseekers are all located in Europe: it comes to no surprise that the United Kingdom and Ireland are leading the list of countries to avoid on the search for the sun by a large margin (13 percentage points), with six out of ten expats now living there having considered the weather as a potential disadvantage before moving.

SEV: Greece Tourism Infrastructure Needs Upgrade Now - GTP Headlines

SEV: Greece Tourism Infrastructure Needs Upgrade Now - GTP Headlines | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
In its weekly bulletin, SEV underlines the need to invest in high quality infrastructure and products which in turn will ensure profitability in the long term.

The SEV report cites the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 released by the World Economic Forum earlier this year according to which Greece ranked 24th among 136 countries in terms of competitiveness but 44th for the quality of tourism infrastructure, which includes hotels, resorts, recreational centers etc. Spain, France and Germany were in top three spots.

SEV backs the findings of other bodies reiterating the need for the state as well as tourism stakeholders to look to the future despite the sector’s improved performance in the last few years, underlining the lagging revenue and the current geopolitical circumstances in the region as points that require further examination.

To achieve this Greece must guarantee a stable political and economic environment in order to attract investment which will tap into the increasing number of tourist flows to the country attracting higher income travelers and diversifying its product.

It also suggests improving overall competitiveness of the tourist product, which is now suffering from high taxation passed on to the customer, as well as simplifying the investment process and licensing procedures for new infrastructure which will bring in private investors and pave the way for diverse pricing policies depending on offered product.

Sector Experts Say Big Break for Greek Tourism Now  - GTP Headlines

Sector Experts Say Big Break for Greek Tourism Now  - GTP Headlines | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it

Investments in facilities, infrastructure, ports and airports as well as offering competitive products, attracting high-income travelers and tapping into culture and gastronomy are crucial to achieving high returns from tourism, according to data gathered by SETE’s intelligence unit (InSETE).

The report underlines the need for a comprehensive operational framework that will outline strategic goals, identify and utilize funding opportunities, ensure sustainability and tap into innovation and new technologies.

According to the study, domestic tourism suffered a massive blow during the economic crisis declining by a massive 67 percent. The sector has since shown signs of recovery, with stakeholders expecting over 26 million international arrivals against 24.8 million in 2016, despite the reduced by 20 percent cruise travel figures.

The sector is now faced with finding ways to increase tourist spending – which dropped last year due to reduced overnight rates and shorter stays. According to InSETE, if spending picks up, it expects total revenue to range between 14.2 and 14.5 billon euros, in which case the sector will contribute one unit to the country’s GDP, will lead to more than 35 million visitors by 2021 and 20 billion euros in travel receipts.

To achieve this, however, InSETE underlines the need for new investments to the tune of 5-7 billion euros over the next four years, citing in the meantime a PwC survey which found that by 2021, there will be a demand for some 105,000 five-star beds.

According to InSETE, for ever single euro spent, an additional 1.2-1.65 euros of additional economic activity are generated making the sector a leading driver of the economy. Indicatively, tourism accounts for 73 percent of the GDP of Crete, the South Aegean and Ionian Islands regions.

Το έχουμε ακούσει όλοι: μπορούμε να ρίξουμε ένα νόμισμα ή να ανάψουμε ένα σπίρτο στη σκηνή του αρχαίου θεάτρου της Επιδαύρου και να το ακούσουμε καθαρά στα πιο ψηλά διαζώματα. Είναι όμως πράγματι έτσι;

Mayor Boutaris Invites Foreign Students to Study in Thessaloniki - GTP Headlines | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
A joint initiative of the municipality and the city’s academic community, the “Study in Thessaloniki” program, which includes educational facilities, universities, colleges and foreign schools based in the northern Greek town, aims to attract foreign students.

Yiannis Boutaris, Mayor of Thessaloniki.
“The same way our city’s monuments remain unexplored, so do our universities,” said Boutaris during a press conference this week, adding that “with four very good public universities, many postgraduate programs and a significant number of colleges, the city offers a fine education and a very interesting student life”.

Municipal authorities have since 2014 been promoting the city as a study destination and its academic options include post-graduate and doctorate curricula or seminars at international events and via the Erasmus student exchange program.

“Benefits for the city are not just for the short term. Young people who have studied in Thessaloniki, who will come to love and stay in Thessaloniki, will give birth to ideas, invest in new technologies, create business growth and jobs,” said Deputy Mayor for Tourism Spyros Pengas.

The terms for development include a special restriction for the protection of the 6th century BC Temple of Apollo Zoster as well as its link via footpath to an adjacent hill where an Early Hellenistic settlement and fortress exist. According to the KAS decision, the area around the temple will not undergo construction and it will operate as an independent archaeological site accessible to visitors.

According to the studies approved by KAS, the investor will be allowed to make additions, renovations and repairs to existing buildings (the Arion and Nafsika hotels), proceed with the demolition of the now abandoned Aphrodite hotel and erect 15 luxury residences. The plans also foresee improvements to the road network and the creation of footpaths as well as the restoration or enhancement of the natural landscape.

Apollo Investment Holdco — a subsidiary of consortium Jermyn Street Real Estate Fund IV LP — paid a total of 393 million euros for the majority stake of the listed and historic Astir Palace.

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Advocates Reject Greece Claiming the Parthenon Marbles Through Brexit Talks - GTP Headlines

Advocates Reject Greece Claiming the Parthenon Marbles Through Brexit Talks - GTP Headlines | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it

According to German newspaper Die Welt, entitled “Brexit vs. Marble Frieze,” in the context of negotiations on Britain’s exit from the EU, the Greek Parliament could demand the return of the Parthenon Marbles from the British Museum to Athens. “Ratification of any agreement between London and Brussels for the next day of Brexit will require the ratification by the national parliaments of the other 27 EU Member States,” the report says.

The renowned Caryatids in the Acropolis Museum. The figures were originally six but one (below, left) was removed by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century and is now in the British Museum in London. The pedestal for the Caryatid removed to London (second from the left on the front) remains empty.
As the report underlines, the proposal, however, is inconsistent with the strategy that has so far been followed by Greek governments, which is based on cultural diplomacy and pressure on the British Museum by engaging public opinion and personalities of public life and politicians in Britain and elsewhere.

According to UK reports, advocates in Britain in favor of the reunification of the sculptures have noted that such a move by the Greek side would be perceived as “blackmail” and would undermine the moral advantage already gained on the issue.

Dame Janet Suzman, chairwoman of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, recently told the Telegraph that any reunification of the marbles should not be mixed up with the Brexit issue.

“I think involving the marbles in the horribly complex Brexit negotiations would be a bit silly,” she said. Referring to the EU referendum, Dame Janet added: “Great art was as far from the question posed to the people as anything I can think of. This is entirely another question, a question of aesthetics, honesty and colonial morality. It would be like putting apples and pears together.”

Suzman’s statement was in reference to SYRIZA MEP Stelios Kouloglou’s request to the European Commission on the issue of Britain returning the Parthenon Marbles through Brexit negotiations.

On its part, the British Museum issued the following statement: “The Acropolis Museum gives the opportunity for the Parthenon Sculptures in Athens (about half of that surviving from antiquity) to be valued against the background of Athenian history. The Parthenon Sculptures in London are an important representation of ancient Athenian culture in the context of world history. ”

For over three decades, Greece has repeatedly called on the British Museum to return the 2,500-year-old marble sculptures that once adorned the Parthenon and have been the subject of dispute since they were illegally removed and sold by Lord Elgin to the British Museum in 1817.
