Mediterranean diet 'combats obesity'

Mediterranean diet 'combats obesity' | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
A Mediterranean diet may be a better way of tackling obesity than calorie counting, leading doctors have said.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Mediterranean diets may help reduce the risk of heart attacks, researchers say.

Better than statins

And they make the case for a Mediterranean diet, including fruit and vegetables, nuts and olive oil, citing research suggesting it quickly reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and may be better than low-fat diets for sustained weight loss.

The lead author, cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra, says the scientific evidence is overwhelming.

"What's more responsible is that we tell people to concentrate on eating nutritious foods.

Documentary on Iconic Greek-Jewish Singer to Premiere In London | Greek Reporter Europe

Documentary on Iconic Greek-Jewish Singer to Premiere In London | Greek Reporter Europe | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
On November 6, 2014, Roy Sher’s award-winning international feature documentary on the life of the iconic Greek-Jewish singer Roza Eskenazi will premiere in London. “My Sweet Canary” follows the life of three young musicians – Mehtap Demir, Tomer Katz and Martha D. Lewis – as they trace Eskenazi’s exuberant musical journey and explore the history of rebetiko music.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The UK premiere will be a charity event for the Leukaemia Cancer Society and will be followed by a UK release from Cineworld on November 7. The documentary has already been screened across the globe throughout Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, India and Europe and it is in Greek with English subtitles.

Eskenazi was born in the mid-1890s in Constantinople. She was a famous Greek-Jewish singer of rebetiko and Greek folk music who rose to fame in the 1920s. She was an amazing singer whose voice and charisma captivated audiences. She was mostly known for giving a voice to the poor and desperate Greek lower-class.

Over the years, she recorded hundreds of songs and was the first Greek female performer who extended her career in the US. She sang in Greek, Turkish, Armenian, Arabic, Yiddish, Ladino and Italian, while she also wrote many of her songs.

Eskenazi played a significant role during the German occupation of Greece. Thanks to a fake baptism certificate, she was not deported despite her Jewish roots. She remained in Athens where she opened a nightclub and would hide resistance fighters and British soldiers in her home. She was exposed in 1943 and spent 3 months in prison before being released.

Eskenazi spent her twilight years in peace at her home in Kipoupoli. Although she was a Jew from birth, she converted to the Greek Orthodox faith in 1976 and was renamed Rozalia Eskenazi. Within two years, she began to show symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. She died on December 2, 1980.

Milos Crafts's curator insight, November 6, 10:54 AM

I don't know if it's possible to describe how wonderful Rembetiko music is!  Imagine love, passion, lust, angst and longing,  with highlights of humor and low-lights of wickedness, all written into music on the fumes of illegally smoked substances.

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

If you’ve heard murmurs that the jagged mountains and white-sand beaches of the Mani region are worth the trip from Athens, you’re not alone. Insiders head there for a traditional experience: authentic Greek salads and moussaka at Lela’s Taverna before spending the evening at the Elies Hotel’s outdoor patio, which overlooks the Gulf of Messenia. About three hours away on the Ionian Sea is the 765-room Costa Navarino resort with an observatory and tourism office dedicated to sustaining the village’s community and seafront.

Missing Amphipolis Sphinx Head Discovered | GreekReporter.com

Missing Amphipolis Sphinx Head Discovered | GreekReporter.com | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
Another amazing discovery has surfaced on the Amphipolis dig, Greece. The missing head of the Sphinx "guarding" the tomb's entrance was finally discovered.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The Sphinx’s head is intact, with minimal breakage on the nose. It has a height of 0.60m and it is assigned to the body of the eastern Sphinx. Made of marble, the head has signs of red color on its curly hair (falling onto its left shoulder) that is tied with a white stripe. It carries a pole and archaeologists characterize it as a sculpture of exceptional art. The head was found in a depth of 15cm inside a marble threshold. In addition, fragments of the Sphinx’s wings were discovered in the same chamber.

In a press release, the Greek Culture Ministry underlined that the excavation is in full progress, having reached the entire surface of the third chamber (4.5m x 6m) in a depth of 5.20m from the tomb’s top. In the coming days, archaeologists have scheduled the removal of fallen limestones from the third tomb chamber’s interior and parts of a newly uncovered gate will be revealed.

UNESCO accepts role of arbiter in Parthenon Marbles row

UNESCO accepts role of arbiter in Parthenon Marbles row | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
Greece’s bid to establish its demand for the return of Parthenon Marbles from the British Museum in London to the Acropolis Museum in Athens more firmly on the international agenda came a step closer this week after UNESCO agreed to act as arbiter in the dispute between Greece and the UK.

“Greece’s aim was just that: the publication of an announcement in which third countries would encourage Great Britain to accept the arbitration process,” Culture Minister Costas Tasoulas told Kathimerini following the UNESCO announcement.

UNESCO’s committee unanimously agreed for the international heritage organization to mediate in talks between the two countries for the return of the marbles, removed from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin in the early 1800s. Britain, however, is under no obligation to accept the arbitration.

In a related development, the Greek Culture Ministry has submitted an application with UNESCO to have the ancient city of Philippi in eastern Macedonia listed as a world heritage site.

Σε έναν ιδιαίτερα θετικό ενδιάμεσο απολογισμό όσον αφορά τις κρατήσεις που καταγράφουν για την Ελλάδα, προχωρούν οι μεγάλοι γερμανικοί tour-operator.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The big winner of summer is #Mykonos as #celebrities put the #glamour back in #Greece

The big winner of summer is #Mykonos as #celebrities put the #glamour back in #Greece | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
Celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan and Cristiano Ronaldo have visited the Greek island this year, amid the revival of a tourist trade vital to the nation's recovery
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The rediscovery of the "island of the winds" has not only helped to put Greece – whipped for the past six years by a 1930s-style depression – back on the map again. In luring even greater numbers of the international jet set to its shores, Mykonos has also supplanted Ibiza as the de rigueur hangout for celebrities and clubbers alike.

This month Afrojack, one of the world's highest-earning DJs, pronounced that young holidaymakers were "better off" heading to the Cycladic isle because its Spanish competitor had simply become too expensive. "The whole magic you used to have on Ibiza is not possible any more because a ticket is €75 [£60]. I go to Mykonos, play exactly the same thing, and you buy a €10 ticket," the 24-year-old told the BBC. " [In Ibiza] they are too focused on the VIP."

With mega-yachts moored in its harbour, magnums of champagne sold on its beaches and dawn-to-dusk parties at its open-air clubs, Mykonos has reclaimed some of the glamour that made it a bacchanalian paradise for artists and the gay community half a century ago. "You bump into Conchita Wurst [winner of this year's European song contest] and think nothing of it," said one visitor, part of a crowd of six well-heeled gay men from the US who spent a week on the island during a cruise of the Aegean earlier this summer. "You definitely don't think 'crisis' wh

The great Victorian beard craze

The great Victorian beard craze | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
The beard fashion of the past 10 years on both sides of the Atlantic mirrors an earlier facial hair craze, which started during the Crimean War, lasted for three decades, and was only entirely stamped out with the invention of the disposable razor in the early 1900s, writes Lucinda Hawksley.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

They were not merely growing the well-coiffed whiskers and neat moustaches hitherto deemed acceptable, but cultivating enormous whiskers that connected to huge, bushy beards and left just about enough space between them and the ever-expanding moustache to allow the owner to eat and speak.

In Britain the return of the beard (the full beard had last been in vogue in Tudor times) was thanks to the Crimean War of 1854-56. Beards had been banned in the British army until this time, but the freezing temperatures of Crimean winters, and the impossibility of getting shaving soap, led to a necessary change.

By the time the last troops returned home, beards were the mark of a hero. Men who had never seen any military action began to grow beards. Within a few years, it was almost impossible to see a beard-free male face in Victorian Britain - except in Buckingham Palace, as Prince Albert refused to conform to the fashion.

Folégandros, Greece
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

There’s no mistaking it, this tranquil spot in the Cyclades has nothing in common with neighboring Santorini: no building stands above two stories, no cruise ships pull into port, and there are no boutiques or fancy restaurants. Instead, on this remote island in the Aegean, waves crash on pebbled beaches, goats scurry up the hills, and an old wooden windmill twists in the salty breeze. It’s a delightfully quiet escape for those who have grown tired of Greece’s more trammeled getaways.

#Clinton Global Initiative to Host #CGI Mediterranean in June 2015 in #Athens, #Greece

#Clinton Global Initiative to Host #CGI Mediterranean in June 2015 in #Athens, #Greece | travelling 2 Greece | Scoop.it
During the 10th Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting, President Bill Clinton, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton announced the CGI Mediterranean meeting, to be held in Athens, Greece in June 2015.

“The CGI Mediterranean meeting will bring leaders together to address critical regional challenges such as youth unemployment and social and economic volatility through new Commitments to Action, and to showcase the region’s enormous potential for growth,” said President Bill Clinton.

“I’ve been honored to serve as a CGI convening sponsor for the past five years. I love the CGI ethos of turning ideas into action. That’s why, today, I am proud to announce I will sponsor the first CGI Mediterranean event to bring the Clinton Global Initiative legacy of leadership and action to my own country,” said Ambassador Gianna Angelopoulos, who joined President Clinton for the announcement and is the founding sponsor of CGI Mediterranean.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

In addition to the CGI Annual Meeting in September, CGI hosts a number of convenings throughout the year, including CGI America and CGI University. For the past two years, Ambassador Angelopoulos has encouraged Greek students to submit proposals to CGI University, and funded their projects after launch. CGI has also brought its model of commitment-making to international settings, as well as hosting issue-focused meetings to create partnerships and develop new Commitments to Action on a global challenge.

CGI Mediterranean continues that tradition. Participants will develop solutions for long-term economic growth and competitiveness for countries in the Mediterranean region by generating commitments in areas such as youth employment, economic development, job creation, and green growth.
