27 August 2011 | We recently published an overview of how airlines and airports around the world have made Apple’s popular iPad device available to passengers in their lounges, rent them out in the air, or use them as self-service kiosk, customer survey tool, and food ordering tool (see: “11 ways how airlines are deploying the iPad”). airlinetrends.com » Blog Archive » How Korean Air is catering to the growing number of female passengers | Travelled | Scoop.it

23 August 2011 | Airlines traditionally have been catering to the stereotype male business traveler in his forties, but the growing economic power of women, the greying of society, and the emergence of more travelers from non-Western countries is changing this archetypical passenger. For example, in the U.S. women already make up over 40 percent of business travellers and 50 percent of frequent flyer program members. Although still limited, some airlines have begun to offer specific amenities for female passengers, which go beyond the traditional amenity kit. Lufthansa and Air France publish dedicated lifestyle magazines for premium female passengers with titles such as Woman’s World and Madame, while Asiana offers additional services for expectant mothers, called ‘PreMom’. South Korean flag carrier Korean Air, however, is going the extra mile to cater to the growing number of female passengers, which make up 45 percent of its passengers.

Another example is a roof-top herb garden watered by AC condensate at the Holiday Inn San Antonio International Airport.

Other features include further integration with Green Engage*, IHG’s environmental management system, and added opportunities for guests to collaborate and share ideas through social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

Holidays are all about Sun, Sea and Spending | Thomson Holidays Communications Centre | Travelled | Scoop.it

A study by Thomson Holiday’s Foreign Exchange shows that despite the recession tourists are still splashing out while away, and not just on what you’d expect.

An incredible 57% of people polled said they spend whatever they like once they get away and don’t budget. Over a third of respondents also stated they did not save for their holiday money. It appears that despite the current economic climate, once people are on the holiday, they forget all their worries – including financial – and treat themselves. Over 65% of respondents highlighted meals and days out as the main activities they spend their hard earned cash on, closely followed by wine and beer.

airlinetrends.com » Blog Archive » Airlines go wireless with their in-flight entertainment systems

airlinetrends.com » Blog Archive » Airlines go wireless with their in-flight entertainment systems | Travelled | Scoop.it

5 September 2011 | In another sign that in-flight entertainment (IFE) is increasingly mimicking the fast developments in digital consumer electronics (witness the flurry of recent announcements by airlines to make the Apple iPad available to passengers and crew). A similar burst of activity is currently taking place in wireless in-flight entertainment: Following American Airlines recent introduction of an onboard wireless streaming video portal, half a dozen of other airlines have announced they will install or test a similar service in the coming months. As wireless IFE is essentially an intranet on a plane that replaces the several kilometers of cables needed to connect every single seat, with a wireless network that allows passengers to connect to content on an onboard server with their own laptops, smart phones or tablet PCs, it is a relatively cheap and light-weight solution for airlines.
