Can I really check in on my phone?

Can I really check in on my phone? | Travelled | Scoop.it

Amazing indeed. Mr Pogue cites three main advantages to checking in via phone: you save paper and trash, you're less likely to lose your boarding pass (it's essentially impossible unless you lose your phone, too), and by checking in early you make it more likely that you'll be upgraded to first or business class. I'm a convert: I will try this on my next flight (SFO to BOS, August 18, United) and report back.

Many teens missing out on hols

Many teens missing out on hols | Travelled | Scoop.it
Annual holidays are not being taken by over a quarter of the country's teenagers, new survey results suggest.
Some 26% of those aged between 13 and 19 go on trips away from home less than once each year, according to figures published by YouGov.
While only 18% of teenagers in southern England are failing to take yearly holidays, the figure is much higher in the North, with 33% reporting that this is the case for them.
Travel insurance is one key area of spending which teens and their parents may need to carefully budget for when planning a trip abroad in the near future.
Among the survey's other key findings, YouGov confirmed that financial contributions are currently being made by 37% of youngsters towards their holidays.
With schools up and down the country breaking up for the summer holidays, a number of families will be travelling both in the UK and further afield in the weeks to come.
Spending time together with family members is important in light of people's busy lifestyles, according to Geoff Cowley, managing director of the Hoseasons Group, the organisation which commissioned the research.
He stated: "We know it's a tough economic climate, but there are some very low prices and exceptional value out there if people hunt around."
The proportion of children who holiday less than once a year, broken down by region, is: North 33%, Midlands 31%, East 31%, London 20%, South 18%, Wales 12%, Scotland 29% and Northern Ireland 11%.
There was less disparity at the other end of the scale, with 37% of children in the North holidaying two or more times a year, compared with 36% in the South.

Google Gets Bus and Tube

Google Gets Bus and Tube | Travelled | Scoop.it
The feature, which launches today, uses Google’s existing maps software.
However, users are now shown a bus icon which, when clicked, shows them a list of different options using public transport. “We’ll give you not only exactly what bus you need, and when it’s due to arrive, but also walking directions at either end," said Parsons.
If used on a mobile phone running Google’s Android software, the software can even give you alerts when you reach your stop on the bus. “Because the phone knows where it is, if you’re on the bus listening to music on your phone, we can even interrupt the music to tell you when you need to get off,” said Mr Parsons.
“We get a feed from TfL frequently, so we can take problems into account, such as the current Circle line changes.”
Google is also working with TfL to get access to its ‘countdown’ boards, which use GPS onboard buses to track them.
Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor’s Director for Digital London said: “London is a fantastic hub for global innovation and is leading the way in the information revolution across Europe. Google Maps is a brilliant example of how freeing data can help Londoners and visitors explore the city.

Vitamin Water bus-stop ad lets devices juice-up before the commute | Travelled | Scoop.it
Battery running low during the rush-hour commute? Glacéau's Vitamin Water Energy Bus Shelter by Crispin Porter & Bogusky wants to help you get charged while you're waiting to board. The new billboards feature a bottle of the vitamin / caffeine-packing drink, sporting a triple-USB port, which you can plug your devices into for some extra juice. Apparently, you'll be seeing these if your daily public-transit hustle takes you through the fine cities of Boston, New York, Chicago or Los Angeles -- we'd imagine owners of HTC's Thunderbolt will find them very useful.
