Taiwan has granted $5 million to the government of Belize for infrastructure projects. The funding, which was officially presented by Taiwanese Ambassador David CK Wu to Prime Minister Dean Barrow Thursday, will target projects including the Belize City Southside Poverty Alleviation Project, the extension of the Southern Highway to Jalacte and the new crossing of the Macal River in San Ignacio/Santa Elena. "Under the Sustainable Tourism Program (STP), funds totaling Bz$504,596.74 will be spent on expanded bathroom and interpretation facilities at Cahal Pech and Belize’s second most visited site, Xunantunich. A new visitor centre will be built at Xunantunich to present and communicate its history, architecture and Maya cosmology. The existing visitor centre at Cahal Pech will undergo a revamp, and improvements will be made to the site trail. The enhancements are timely, as Cahal Pech is the chosen venue for a number of the special events planned to celebrate the completion of the 13th B'ak'tun in December. Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) will benefit from Bz$177,500 investment. It is an exclusive tour, as ATM is one of the most spectacular subterranean Maya archaeological sites in the region. A construction company has essentially destroyed one of Belize's largest Mayan pyramids with backhoes and bulldozers to extract rock for a road-building project.

This is certainly a major loss to Belize and its Historical Value can never be replaced. The person or persons responsible should certainly be levied a heavy penalty, loss of contract to ever do work as a contractor and also serve jail time. Under the NICH act the penalty is 10 years or $10,000 but thats certainly a very low penalty for such a destruction.

Olympics excitement was building today just hours before the spectacular opening ceremony was set to be the greatest sporting show on earth - with Sir Roger Bannister now favourte to light the flame.
Sixty-thousand ecstatic fans will pack the Olympics stadium in Stratford, east London, for the historic a three-hour crescendo to months of build-up marking the start of the London 2012 Games.
And although bookies were tipping the legendary four-minute mile man Sir Roger to officially start the Games, mystery still surrounds the identity of the person who'll perform the historic feat with Sir Steve Redgrave and Daley Thompson still in the running.
Organisers are at pains to keep every last detail of the event secret, and only a handful of people are thought to know who will be given the job.
Volunteers who took part in stunning rehearsals last night were even ordered not to take pictures and bosses pulled leaked footage form the Internet.

Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow has confirmed that an agreement will shortly be signed to bring to bring a Four Seasons Resort to Belize with Arab funding. Speaking in a radio broadcast interview today Mr. Barrow said that his government has given the go ahead for the Qatar Sovereign Fund to take over the small island of Caye Chapel off the coast of Belize City and establish Belize’s first 5 star luxury hotel. “We have given the go ahead. Negotiations are all but finalized and the details of the investment are being worked on between the Qatar Sovereign Fund and the Belize Bank Limited, who have the island on their foreclosed properties portfolio,” said Mr. Barrow. The Prime Minister added that the developers will make an investment of US $125. million and bring much needed jobs to the area...
