Disruption Equals Opportunity for Tech Entrepreneurs

Disruption Equals Opportunity for Tech Entrepreneurs | Travel Tech and Innovation | Scoop.it
The explosion of new technology has created opportunities for entrepreneurs, as the cloud opens new avenues for service operations. However, the cloud alone is not sufficient for success, according to participants in the first Technology Entrepreneurship Roundtable, held at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration (SHA). In addition to the cloud, businesses need support from the crowd—that is, the business has to find products and services that meet consumers' needs. Highlights of the roundtable are presented in a report from the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR), "Utility and Disruption: Technology for Entrepreneurs in Hospitality," by Mona Anita K. Olsen and Kelly McDarby. Olsen, who chaired the roundtable, is an assistant professor at the SHA, where McDarby is a senior. The report is available from the CHR at no charge.

Onsite Data Analytics – A Goldmine for #Meetings Improvement | Travel Tech and Innovation | Scoop.it
The onsite meeting used to be known as the “black hole” of event data management. . Planners used computers to gain insights before and after events, but during an event they were “flying blind.”  For example, paper surveys were handed out, but tallying wasn’t completed until after the event – not in time to make mid-course corrections. Emerging Data Collection ToolsNow, it is possible for every touch on a mobile event app to be tracked, scored and rated. Social media channels can be monitored and incorporated into the mix. Onsite “like

Why Big Hotel Brands Need to Act More Like Airbnb

Why Big Hotel Brands Need to Act More Like Airbnb | Travel Tech and Innovation | Scoop.it

The big hotel brands can do a lot more to elevate the whole “local” trend by recommending apps and web-based platforms that guide guests to local neighborhoods, just like Airbnb hosts do.

The concept of the next generation hotel acting as a hyper-connected knowledge hub in its immediate community is compelling, but for the most part unrealized. The industry has talked at length about the potential role of hotels as gateways into their neighborhood, but in reality, it’s been mostly actualized via hotel associates acting as insider sources, partnerships with local restaurant/bar owners, and maybe a generic list on a hotel website somewhere. That was interesting five years ago.

The Future of Analytics Is Prescriptive, Not Predictive - ClickZ

The Future of Analytics Is Prescriptive, Not Predictive - ClickZ | Travel Tech and Innovation | Scoop.it
Predictive analytics is evolving into prescriptive analytics, a mash up between the worlds of predictive analytics, and simulation and optimization, which have traditionally been used to understand the best course of action given a series of constraints. Though these techniques, such as linear programming and Monte Carlo simulation, have their applications in marketing analytics, they're deployed far more extensively in areas, including supply chain and logistics. So whereas descriptive analytics address what happened and predictive analytics address what might happen, prescriptive analytics answers the question, "What should I do?"

Let's use a GPS navigation system to explain the difference. The descriptive analytics tell us which way to go, while the device's predictive analytics tell us when we are likely to get there. If our GPS has prescriptive analytical capabilities, it will monitor that forecast in real time against my objective, which is usually to get somewhere as quickly as possible. If, on the basis of the feedback, it finds that another solution will be better, it will recommend that I change my current route and take a different route instead. It tells me what I should do.

In the marketing world, descriptive analytics would tell me that a customer has churned. Predictive analytics will tell me that a customer is likely to churn. Prescriptive analytics will tell me that a customer is likely to churn and what the appropriate intervention strategy should be, based upon my objectives and constraints at that time."

Who are the six new tribes of travellers that could shape our industry’s future? |

Who are the six new tribes of travellers that could shape our industry’s future? | | Travel Tech and Innovation | Scoop.it
When we think about future potential customers it tends to be those coming from markets that are opening up – China, India, Latin America… And, the way we think of these customers is in terms of what their preferences, travel patterns and behaviours are through the trip cycle and, crucially, how much they spend. But, what if going forward, travellers identify themselves less and less in terms of where they were born, and increasingly liken themselves to other groups – or, tribes?
