Some 12,000 people dwell in 3,000 shanties at Karwan Bazar slum, which was set up on both sides of the rail line. People live without running water in an unsanitary environment. The houses are made of poly bags, bamboos and carton papers. Most of the slum dwellers eke out a meager living by pulling rickshaws while many lead their lives by cleaning sewer pipelines and manholes of the city corporation. Every 30 minutes a train passes by and minor children living in slums on both sides of the rail lines often become victims of accidents as they are unable to comprehend the danger.

The basics of brick making in Bangladesh haven't changed much over the centuries. Clay bricks are made by hand, dried, fired and then cooled. Kilns are used in the firing process. Chimney kilns improve the airflow and burn fuel more completely, but because most use low-grade coal and firewood as fuel, air pollution has become a serious issue and a major health concern. The chimney stacks shown here are about 100 ft (30 m) tall. Traditionally, brick making is a small-scale businesses mostly located in peri-urban areas. In Bangladesh, there are over 4,000 brick-making enterprises producing over 12 billion bricks annually. Brick production, however, is one of the most environmentally damaging activities in the industrial sector.

The Tripuri people are considered part of the Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group. Originally they migrated from near the upper courses of the Yangtze kiang and the Hwang Ho rivers in Western China. The Tripuri people mainly speak various dialects called Kokborok. The Tripuri adhere to Vaishnava Hinduism which is heavily influenced by the religious doctrine of the neighbouring Bengali people.

The indigenous Tripuri people comprises various hill tribal communities viz., Tipra, Reang, Jamatia, Kaipeng, Noatia, Koloi, Halam, etc. who migrated to this land in successive waves in the ancient past. The Tripuris live on the slopes of hills in a group of five to fifty families. Their houses in these areas are built of bamboo or ua as it is called in Kokborok and raised five to six feet height to save themselves from the dangers of the wild animals.
