Pavel Gospodinov's insight:

Sangu River, Bandarban district, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh, Indian Sub-Continent, Asia

Sangu river (295 km) originates in the Arakan Hills of Myanmar. Most inhabitants of the villages along the river belong to the Buddhist Marma tribe. The Sangu is a shallow river but it becomes violent during rains. It flows west through Satkania and Banshkhali upazilas of Chittagong district to meet the Bay of Bengal near Khankhanabad (Chittagong). The major tributaries of the river are Chandkhali Nadi and Dolu khal.

Pavel Gospodinov's insight:

Manipuri tribe (Meitei people), Tiekria village, Sreemangal (Srimangal), Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh, Indian Sub-Continent, Asia

The Meiteis or Meeteis are the majority ethnic group of Manipur, India, and because of this are sometimes referred to as Manipuris. The Meitei people are made up of seven clans, who trace their written history back to 33 AD.

Meithei (Meitei), is the predominant language and lingua franca in the southeastern Himalayan state of Manipur, in northeastern India. Meithei is also spoken in the Indian states of Assam and Tripura, and in Bangladesh and Burma (now Myanmar).

Meithei is a Tibeto-Burman language whose exact classification remains unclear, though it shows lexical resemblances to Kuki and Tangkhul Naga.

Boats, boat-building and traditions surrounding water-based communications have always been rich in Bangladesh. The Potia shipbuilding yard is located on the riverside in Chittagong. In the shipyard is still applied an age-old tradition, using the same craftsmen and ancient technologies, as in the past. Unfortunately nowadays the thousands of years old tradition that has been passed on from generation to generation, is almost lost. Only a few places like the Potia ship-building yard still use vastly these old ship building techniques and traditions.

LIFE ON THE RIVER BURIGANGA, DHAKA, BANGLADESH | Pavel Gospodinov Photography | PAVEL GOSPODINOV PHOTOGRAPHY | Scoop.it
Pavel Gospodinov's insight:

The Buriganga River flows past the southwest outskirts of Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh. Its average depth is 25 feet (7.6 m) and maximum depth is 58 feet (18 m).

The Buriganga is economically very important to Dhaka. Launches and country boats provide connection to other parts of Bangladesh, a largely riverine country.

Today, the Buriganga river is afflicted by the noisome problem of pollution. The chemical waste of mills and factories, household waste, medical waste, sewage, dead animals, plastics, and oil are some of the Buriganga's pollutants.

Paddle steamers service from Dhaka (Sadarghat Ferry terminal) to Khulna, Bangladesh, Indian Sub-Continent, Asia.

Paddlers still exist in Bangladesh operated by Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation on the famous "Rocket" service on the Buriganga River from Dhaka (Sadarghat Ferry terminal) to Khulna with ten intermediate stops, a distance of 354 kilometres. The journey time is approximately 28 hours but can vary enormously depending on the navigability of the river system at anygiven time. Vessels offer accommodation in three classes and are patronized by regular paying ferry passengers and tourists sailing as part of organized holiday tours. The journey passes through the Sundarbans, the vast mangrove Forest of the Ganges delta which is teeming with exotic wildlife.
