Volunteer Abroad Ghana Orphanage Program with Abroaderview.org
Anne (Ghana, Orphanage Program): I guess I will start out by saying that this has been an amazing experience and I have no regrets in doing it. Something I have always wanted to do was to volunteer in an orphanage home in Ghana to help the less privileged. My arrival was better than I could have hoped for. The flight was easy and I didn't have any trouble even though it was my first time flying alone. The coordinator picked me up right when I walked out of the airport, and I was thrilled that someone so sweet and who could speak English was there during my first hours in Ghana. I guess this is a good time to mention the staff. I was taken to the homestay accommodation house where I was introduced to the homestay mom that will be taking care of me. I was taken to my room and I always felt that it has been my second home. The homestay accommodation had wonderful facilities that I never expected. The tap in the house was flowing so well, the flushing toilet was excellent and electricity was available in the house and i enjoyed some local movies during my stay in the house. It was very clean and comfortable and it has been really nice.
My one month stay in Ghana and working in the orphanage has always been fun with the kids and I achieved whatever I wanted to achieve.
The coordinator works so hard to make sure that my experience is the best that it can be. He is able to translate for me, show me the best places in town, and give us advice about traveling anywhere in Ghana. I don't know what I would have done without him. He is a good tour guide.
I was also taken to the orphanage to see my work place and it was there and then that I realized I would shed many tears before I left. The children were some of the poorest I have ever seen but so friendly and pleasant that even on that first day I realized they would be teaching me more on the value of life than i would be teaching them. Working the program has shown me just what beautiful they really are in ways such as friendliness, willingness to learn, obedient, willingness to share with others what little they have, the older ones always taking care of the younger ones and all these qualities just to mention a few.
In the orphanage I was a class teacher to about 25 children where I taught them English, Mathematics, creative Art and Environmental Studies and i was given the opportunity to organize games and activities for the children. Before I started work I was taken through how to prepare my lesson plan and go about my teaching in class. I had a lot of work to do at the school, I worked 7 hours in a day and 5 times a week. In the orphanage my work was to entertain and help the children in their free time, before and after school. Bathing the younger kids, painting the orphanage's school, helping the kids with their homework, working in the orphanage’s farm, teaching at the orphanage’s schools, telling the kids about HIV/AIDS.
I would always want to volunteer in Ghana to help the children at the orphanage because I was always loved and needed by the kids. All in all it has been a most memorable experience and without a doubt one I would have no hesitation recommending to other people and if possible one that all being well I hope to repeat in the not too distant future because the coordinator made me to achieve all what I wanted to achieve in Ghana especially helping kids.

A water purification system that uses nanotechnology to remove bacteria, viruses and other contaminants may be able to deliver clean drinking water to rural communities for less than $3 a year per family, according to a new study. Researchers at India's Institute of Technology Madras have developed a new kind of portable water purification system based on nanoparticle filtration. In their paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team explains how their new device does its job—it employs nanoparticles to remove not just biological hazards, but toxic heavy metals as well. The system they have developed is a two-stage filtration process that provides 10 liters of clean water in just an hour's time.
