Maya festivals for the end of time

Maya festivals for the end of time | Belize in Social Media | Scoop.it
Several sites in Belize are hosting events to celebrate the end (or the resetting) of the Maya calendar.

"...At the Caracol Archaeological Reserve in western Belize, the National Institute of Culture and History is holding four special events to mark 2012’s two solstices (21 June and 21 December) and the two equinoxes (21 March and 22 September). An archaeologist will lead a tour of the ancient site, nestled in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, and traditional food will be served..."

It’s 2012, which means another doomsday may be upon us

It’s 2012, which means another doomsday may be upon us | Belize in Social Media | Scoop.it

Another story on the 2012 apocalypse, this time from the perspective of the Belizean Maya.

"...All this calendar talk is news to Firmo Choc, a 39-year-old Mayan farmer who lives in a rural village in Belize. The first he heard of the New Age crowd’s fuss over his culture’s ancient calendar was recently, when his American employer told him about it..."

2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End?

2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End? | Belize in Social Media | Scoop.it

This is not specifically about Belize, but with all the attention to 2012, and the big marketing push in Belize, it is relevant.

"...Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice..."

The Maya and 2012

The Maya and 2012 | Belize in Social Media | Scoop.it

Yet another 2012 article, yet this one shows a little rational thought.

"...With the long awaited arrival of 2012, there is growing interest in the ancient Maya civilisation, and this is a double edged sword. On one hand, it is good to see this rich, highly advanced ancient culture finally getting the attention it deserves..."

Maya of Belize Immersion

Maya of Belize Immersion | Belize in Social Media | Scoop.it

One of Belize's top resorts in Placencia offers a unique perspective on 2012.

"...Your week long "Maya of Belize" immersion is anchored in Placencia Village, where you will enjoy a luxury Villa accommodation at Chabil Mar. Placencia, referred to by the Belize Tourism Board as "Barefoot Perfect", has a long history, starting with the Maya, who established at least 14 sites around the Placencia Lagoon. They were principally engaged in the making of salt as well as participating in the extensive coastal trade...."

Archaeology Magazine: Special Collector's Issue on the Maya | Moon Travel Guides | Belize in Social Media | Scoop.it

Joshua Berman, well known expert on travel to Belize, writes about the newest issue of Archaeology Magazine.

"...Come with Archaeology's editors as they dive deep into the sacred pools where the Maya made human sacrifices to the gods, watch modern boxers in Mexico recreating the sacred rituals of their Maya ancestors, and delve into one man's obsession with an ancient Maya queen..."

Maya Region to Profit from 2012 Tourism

Maya Region to Profit from 2012 Tourism | Belize in Social Media | Scoop.it

Awe yes, the tourism industry is trying to cash in on the Maya neritage in Belize...let's hope that most tourist will leave a percentage of their tourism dollars with the Maya.

"...Most Maya are not in the capital...they're out in the villages and communities. And most traditional tourism infrastructure is not in Maya hands. It is in white people's hands, the Ladinos, they benefit more from tourism economically. But if foreigners want to visit the more remote villages, to visit this essence of the culture, this essence of life, they should go to the smallest villages where they have conserved the Mayan languages and form of life. Surely the Maya will benefit from this tourism...."

Dec. 21, 2012: Will End Of Mayan Calendar Bring Doomsday?

Dec. 21, 2012: Will End Of Mayan Calendar Bring Doomsday? | Belize in Social Media | Scoop.it

Yet another 2012 article...at least this one has a little bit of real information from 2012 travel expert Joshua Berman.

"...Berman is the author of "Maya 2012: A Guide To Celebrations In Mexico, Guatemala, Belize & Honduras," and says there are 10 million Mayans still living in the region and that most of them are not looking at next year as the end of the world, but as the beginning of a cash cow..."

Mayan 2012 Prophesy: Mexico Finds Second Reference Among Ruins

Mayan 2012 Prophesy: Mexico Finds Second Reference Among Ruins | Belize in Social Media | Scoop.it

Actually, serious Maya studies scholars say the brick most likely does NOT refer to 2012 and even if it did, it certainly makes no statement about apocalypse or foretold events.
