Biggest issues to solve in content curation?

I felt we made the most progress in 2011:

  • “enable value-adding curators to get more tangible benefits from their activity “
  • “semi-automate low-grade curation so people are liberated to tackle the more challenging and valuable stuff”
  • “connect curators to share practices and elevate curation from craft to art”
  • “create communities through curation”
  • “augment the reader’s experience with curated content”
  • “accelerate Social Discovery of high-quality curators”
  • “augment the content producer’s experience”
  • “enable cooperative and collaborative curation”

Amassing Is Not Curating: Curation Filters The Flood For a Specific Purpose and Tribe

Excellent presentation delivered from Margot Bloomstein to the Web 2.0 Expo 2011 audience on October 11th on the topic of content curation.

In her 98 visual slides Ms Bloomstein does an excellent job of synthesizing, describing and highlighting the characterizing traits of true curation, while distinguishing clearly from similar aggregation practices.

Recommended.

Curate the Cloud: Is Human Curation the Silver Lining in the Content Cloud?

Curate the Cloud: Is Human Curation the Silver Lining in the Content Cloud? | Travel Curators and Curation Tools | Scoop.it

(...) We all know clouds have a metaphorical dark side. There are storm clouds on the horizon, dark clouds, and foreboding clouds. There are clouds that can open up and drench us in a downpour - and that's what the content cloud is about to do. (...)

What we're seeing is the emergence of the curated web. In a world of endless and unmanageable data, we don't want more information.(...)

We're in an era that has shifted from content abundance to an avalanche of undistinguished content. The cloud is turning dark; the skies are about to become menacing. Since it seems very clear that the volume of content isn't going to diminish, human curation may be the silver lining in the content cloud.

What Curators NOT are, web curation vs. other curation, vs. aggregation

Excerpted from J.D. Hildebrand's article "I, curator".
The amount of information online is unfathomably vast and dreadfully disorganized. (...) Web-search technology is miraculously effective if you already know what you're looking for, but if you need to stay up-to-date on a handful of topics, search engines suffer from clunkiness and redundancy.

"Interesting analysis, ramblings and opinion what curation is all about, and some interesting pointers to good examples, curators (Rob Diana) and extra reading."

Please note that the author of this original post, Shobha Atre, uses images stolen from other web sites, (the one appearing here is an image I have bought and personalized myself with those titles) without providing any credit or attribution. How can this person be a reliable curator if sHe behaves in this way?
janlgordon's comment, December 25, 2011 1:55 PM
Hi robin,
Thank you for pointing this out, I had no idea she used a stolen image in this piece. Will leave this up so you see my response. Taking it down tomorrow, not tweeting it. I don't support anyone who does this.
