Hey, New York: Airbnb wants to get you in bed

Hey, New York: Airbnb wants to get you in bed | Travel | Scoop.it
By Adrianne Jeffries and Russell Brandom
Paul DiCesare has hosted more than 100 Airbnb guests over the past three years and even started a service that helps other hosts manage their listings. He...
Shinfung Teo's insight:

With the sex parties scandals and violations of state housing laws that AirBnb has been facing recently, they have been working hard towards gaining two major legislative goals in New York. However, these are not going too well as many worry that such practices actually take apartments out of regular market with some professional hosts making a lot of money out of it.

As travelers, we can only hope that Airbnb efforts in replacing vague negative impressions will help them gain approval from the legislation six months later or travelers to areas such as New York will be at the losing end of the debate and victims to exorbitant hotel charges again.

Organization Offers Free Travel-Centric Technology Courses to Seniors | Travel | Scoop.it
A local organization is helping seniors maximize their golden years by teaching them all about the latest travel websites.
Shinfung Teo's insight:

The Internet has changed the ways in which the nature of travel is being planned and carried out. With retirees taking up a large majority in the travel industry due to their spending power, organizations such as OATS, Older Adults Technology Services, have been giving free courses to teach them how to book tickets and plan their trips from reviews and applications online. This is a great way to bridge the gap and allow the older generation access to the vast amount of resources available on the Internet.

BusinessWorld | The impact of budget airlines on first-time travel, in two charts

BusinessWorld | The impact of budget airlines on first-time travel, in two charts | Travel | Scoop.it

TSOMETHING happened towards the end of the last decade that caused people who had never before paid for their own overseas travel to finally take the plunge in significant numbers, according to the results of an online survey conducted by BusinessWorld Online.

Shinfung Teo's insight:

This is a very interesting insight on budget airlines being one of the driving factors behind the spike in number of first-time travelers, especially the young and adventurous. As a student traveler on a tight budget, it is one of the main factors that made travelling more affordable for me. Previously, i have never considered the importance of budget airlines, but this article made me value them so much more. Also, budgets airlines are offering many deals such as Scoot Morning Glory that has made it possible for me and many others to venture out of the country for the first time despite our low finances.

Women may face travel’s dark side

Women may face travel’s dark side | Travel | Scoop.it
Female travelers can face everything from groping to, in rare cases, deadly attacks. But quantifying the violence against women — and the risk — is difficult.
Shinfung Teo's insight:

There had been increasing attention to violence against women and girls in the past five to ten years. But to stop travelling is not a real solution. Precaution is needed no matter what gender or where you are. Travelers need to stay vigilant and in tune with the local news and also phone numbers of local police and hotel at hand. Do not let the dark side of travelling top you in seeing the world!

Shinfung Teo's insight:

Really insightful post that highlights important life lessons one can get from travelling. 'Eye contact and a smile are the best form of communication' is one of the greatest advice, not only for all travelers out there but also everyone to heed to in their everyday life. We are bound to meet barriers to communication and culture differences as we step out into different parts of the world but eye contact and a warm smile can go a long way, even in the worst situations (:

TEDxRainier - Rick Steves: The Value of Travel - YouTube

This film is exploring the question 'Why do people travel'? As a traveler myself I had trouble answering this question, so I got the idea to ask travelers th...
Shinfung Teo's insight:

Steves highlighted the value of thoughtful travel and how it connects us with nature, people and their culture. There are so many different slices of culture that we can only full understand when we immerse ourselves within the locals.

I like how Steve talked about how travel can change something that was our basic truth, for example, we would assume that people who used their hands to eat are uncivilized when it is actually norm for them and likewise they will wonder why is there a need for fork/ chopstick and spoon for us.

A particular meaningful quote he mentioned was "Fear is for people who don't get out very much" and how travel also helps us to see things that we were blind to (war, poverty) and changes our outlook towards life and the world.

Airbnb Is Quietly Building the Smartest Travel Agent of All Time | Enterprise | WIRED

Airbnb Is Quietly Building the Smartest Travel Agent of All Time | Enterprise | WIRED | Travel | Scoop.it
Airbnb overhauled its logo, its website, and its mobile app this morning. But there’s something deeper going on with the sharing economy’s most popular travel site. Under the covers, Airbnb has quietly begun an ambitious effort to painstakingly mine the treasure trove of data contained in the site’s customer reviews and host descriptions to create…
Shinfung Teo's insight:

Airbnb has been getting really popular in recent years and growing in power to be more than just a travel website. With the launch of their website and Mobile app, i believe Airbnb is going to be one of the most important influence in the travel industry in the near future. The huge database that Airbnb possesses will determine not only where we are going to stay, but also where we are travelling to.

Working Towards Sustainable Coastal Tourism

Working Towards Sustainable Coastal Tourism | Travel | Scoop.it
It is a little hard to admit that I was sitting on a plane when I wrote this.  I was flying home from a symposium in Grenada that was cosponsored by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), the Grenada Hotel...
Shinfung Teo's insight:

Often, we do not consider the impact that our travels can have to the environment around us. There have been a growing movement for more socially and environmentally responsible travel with four hotels in Grenada using solar panels to heat water, sourcing food locally, making every effort to reduce both water and energy use etc.

I feel that this effort needs to come from more than organizations themselves. There is a need for travelers to recognize that 'Going green is urgent' and that choosing hotels and practices that are more energy saving can preserve our environment for more wonderful travels to come.
