Car Accidents in Africa
New York Times
To the Editor: Re “Africa's Trauma Epidemic” (Op-Ed, Oct. 18): Ola Orekunrin is right; we must find better ways to care for car accident victims in sub-Saharan Africa.
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

New York Times says that road accidents in Africa are caused by the lack of road rules.

The New York Times says that cars and buses overtake even in conditions where they shouldn't be overtaking.

Woman Says Transport Drivers Put Her Life In Danger MyFox Philadelphia If anyone knows the dangers of using a hand-held cell phone while cruising around busy streets and highways, you'd think it would be a medical transport driver, but a frightened...
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

A rule that all drivers should know and obey, is that they should not talk on any hand-held cell-phones.

A brain tumor survivor said that taxi drivers put her life in danger as they talk on their cell-phones whilst driving. Like many other patiences who use medical transport, all they can do is hope that nothing goes wrong.

Gravel roads a concern Peters

Gravel roads a concern Peters | transportation in south africa | Scoop.it
The transport department was concerned that many South Africans were still having to use untarred roads, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters says.
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

There's not much to say about this article, but I feel it is time the government looks at developing rural communities because the can bring in a lot of tourists. Fixing roads that link up to these communities can help boost the community.

DA: Transport minister out of touch with reality | transportation in south africa | Scoop.it
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters, who says she "doesn’t know if e-tolling is unpopular with motorists" is "out of touch with reality", the DA says.
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

E-tolling has been an ongoing topic and this article makes me feel as if government is not listening to the voices of citizens. They are rather thinking about maximising profits, but in the process exploiting people who do not even have enough money already. Me I'm touched.

Fuel price increase triggers transport fare confusion | West Africa

Fuel price increase triggers transport fare confusion | West Africa | transportation in south africa | Scoop.it
An increase in the price of fuel has triggered an upward review of public transport fares in Ghana amid confusion among transport operators and commuters on the new charges.
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

Fuel, fuel, fuel!!!! Here's a story, a man once knew how to make cars run, by using sand (research if you don't believe me) but my theory is that they probably bought him and silenced him inorder to keep charging us these ridiculous fuel prices. I just think this story is interesting because even when the petrol prices decrease, taxi fares always remain the same- (although that's got nothing to do with government)....SiGh...what are we to do with this world. If I was President and government for a day...

The Causes of Trucking Accidents

The Causes of Trucking Accidents | transportation in south africa | Scoop.it
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, around 500,000 trucking accidents occur each year in the United States. 5,000 of these accidents result in fatalities. One out of every eight traffic fatality involves a trucking collision.
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

Some truck accidents usually occur due to the driver's lack of good decisions whilst on the road. Many truck drivers are involved in road accidents because they are driving under the influence, speeding, not securing heavy loads properly, and many more factors. Some accidents are beyond the driver's control, like oil spilt on the road or break failure and so on.

Truck drivers work long hours and usually they are working under strict schedules and up to 70-88 hours daily.

Safety campaign works to reduce road accidents - Billings Gazette

Safety campaign works to reduce road accidents
Billings Gazette
For most of us, driving in Billings' traffic seems fairly safe. But for pedestrians and bicyclists, crossing the city's streets or negotiating traffic can be treacherous.
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

The title of this article is interesting; so much so that I had prepared myself for something atypical. But I found it extremely disappointing. It is tedious and does not make the reader feel inclined to check out the website of the campaign. All that the article proposes has been done before, nothing new and definitely nothing interesting. It does not even stress the importance of road safety. It left me dissatisfied.

Recession transport: bike sales overtake cars - The Guardian (blog)

Recession transport: bike sales overtake cars - The Guardian (blog) | transportation in south africa | Scoop.it
The Guardian (blog)
Recession transport: bike sales overtake cars
The Guardian (blog)
Recession transport: bike sales overtake cars. The European economic cycle appears to have taken on a new dimension - and it's round.
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

Coming across this blog, I found it alarming to note that "Bike sales exceeded those for cars in all but 4 of the 23 European countries". I surmise I speak for numerous people around my age group when I say that a car is part of the dream- not a bike. But a spike in bike sales makes sense because bikes are not only eco-friendly but they are also cost-effective. On the contrary, the content covered in the blog is quite idealistic because it only compares newly sold cars to both used and newly sold bikes. This is not characteristic of good journalism. Nonetheless, it seems as though bikes are the future.

Pinetown: Another truck fails brake test

Pinetown: Another truck fails brake test | transportation in south africa | Scoop.it
A truck belonging to the company which owns the truck that ploughed into a number of vehicles in Pinetown, killing 23 people, has failed a brake test.
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

So since the Pinetown Accident is still the talk of the town...Another truck belonging to the same company failed a brake test. I'm just wondering are they waiting for another accident to happen before they actually do something about checking and servicing trucks in companies that transport goods?!....Just makes me frustrated that reality only hits people when something happens to them or their families.

South African transport workers end walkout, strike threat wanes

South African transport workers end walkout, strike threat wanes | transportation in south africa | Scoop.it
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Striking South African airline workers returned to work this week and promised to pursue wage talks in a further sign of waning union militancy amid job fears that have eased the...
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

Strikes in South Africa for wage increase has decreased this year compared to last year and 2011.

South Africa has only lost 2million working hours this year compared to 3.5million last year. There seems to be an improvement as people are open to negotiations about wages with the Union. There has been no violence that has led to deaths or injuries this year like the Marikana strike last year. Workers seem to realise that if they strike and not work, they get no pay.

Responsible companies can reduce fuel desperation | MySpreeCard

Responsible companies can reduce fuel desperation | MySpreeCard | transportation in south africa | Scoop.it
Soaring petrol pump prices mean people are taking more extreme measures to fuel their cars. Here’s how responsible businesses can help customers and staff.

Via darrentracey
JMS 1 Tutorial Group 8's insight:

The fact that 15% of the well-off admit to struggling with fuel prices illustrates just how expensive fuel is. To move from point A to point B is of the essence, which is why this news piece caught my attention. It is the introduction of innovative ways of ensuring that one can manoeuvre without obstruction that appeals to me as a prospective driver. To my understanding, the peolpe that own cars are of the working population which is why I believe that a system of this nature could be implemented in South Africa. But I do think that bonuses should not just be limited to fuel because there are certain peole who would prefer monetary bonuses instead of fuel. This system though is definitely worth trying out.
