Lessons from the Immersive Writing Lab [#transmedia]

Mike Jones: "Having read through all the entries in the [IWL Storyworld Competition] and written hundreds of pages of coverage and feedback on them, I feel somewhat like I’ve obtained a glimpse of the Transmedia writer zeitgeist - a macro-level snapshot of where the worlds writers are at right now in attempting to embrace and exploit the opportunities of a Transmedia world."

DRC: Here are his top 6 tips for writers hoping to work in this complex area.

25 Ways To Earn Your Audience

I keep noodling on the idea of how you earn — not build, necessarily, but earn — your audience as a creative type. I’m not sure I have all (or any of) the answers, but here’s a good shot at it.

7 excellent augmented reality campaigns

Augmented reality ads are slowly making their way into the mainstream, with more and more brands using the technology to engage consumers with hidden digital content.

This is definitely an impressive use of AR, however it used a bespoke AR app called VWJuicedUp that was only available on iOS. The use of custom made AR apps is potentially the only thing preventing the technology from really catching on with consumers.

QR code scanners are universal so consumers need only download one version, however AR campaigns often require the user to download a new app every time which doesn't offer a great user experience.

Our TV lounges in the near future? Full wall, social, multi screen, voice/gesture control - NDS

- Our future TVs will not be controlled through touch, or by talking, or by gestures in the air. The controls will be in the remote control tablet. Today's TV remote is controlled by micro-gestures, a tiny press of the channel button. It makes no sense to replace that with grand gestures, arm waving , etc., Good point.

- The remote control is an iPad or any touch screen tablet. The interface offers easy, slider based controls, and it also doubles as the 'second screen' allowing web browsing, and for novel forms of TV show interactions.

- The interface NDS has developed runs on Chrome. Even though Google is becoming a competitor in this space, the relationship is defined as 'co-opetition' and the two companies have exchanged some TV related technologies.

Nice Archive post: How to Define strategies for a Multiscreen World ht @mindcaffeine

We looked at many projects and studies that involved experiences across multiple screens – from biblical stories laid out on multiple cathedral windows and the first computer-based multiscreen installations, to current examples, which are popping up everywhere. We also closely observed ourselves and others using and shifting between different devices.
To make these scenarios more tangible for ourselves and to communicate them better to our clients, we started documenting patterns we noticed. These patterns and associated examples were the core of many workshops we did in various constellations: with brand managers, advertising professionals and design students.
Today we like to share this part of our research work: patterns for multiscreen strategies. It’s been a handy reference when discussing solutions for digital products and services. We hope you’ll find them useful too.

Speaking of Fandom & Participatory Culture... The People Vs. George Lucas | Geeks of Doom

The People vs. George Lucas DVD | Instant Video Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe

"The People vs. George Lucas is a quasi-documentary film which uses a courtroom debate approach to explore the issues of filmmaking and fanaticism pertaining to the Star Wars franchise, and its creator, George Lucas.

The film combines filmmaker and celebrity interviews with fan-created content and fictional dramatizations to present an all-encompassing look at the indelible mark Lucas has left on pop culture and the film industry.

Interviewees include author Neil Gaiman, writer/director Kevin Rubio (Troops), actor David Prowse (Darth Vader), and Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz. Lucas himself appears frequently in archival footage, but is never interviewed directly by filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe.

The People vs. George Lucas discusses the extent to which the Star Wars franchise is an incomplete artistic creation of Lucas (and subject to his evolving vision) versus a cultural phenomenon that belongs to the general public...."

Social TV Moves Beyond Promotional Role, Becomes Content | Next Steps Are Fan Co-Creation and Recognition

Increases Appointment Viewing, Next Steps Are Fan Co-Creation and Recognition.

Social TV could ultimately revive appointment viewing after years of DVR dominance.

But just how cable programmers and advertisers are using and benefiting from that was a focal point during Ad Age's Social Engagement/Social TV conference taking place in New York on Wednesday.

Social activity during TV's prime time has skyrocketed 193% since just last year, said Mark Ghuneim, CEO and founder of Wiredset and Trendrr. That kind of growth means programmers are looking at social-media chatter not just as an amplifier of TV programming but as content in its own right.

At Bravo, social interactions are now being planned in the initial stages of conception and production, said Lisa Hsia, exec VP-digital media at Bravo Media. Her network has actually seen a ratings lift on reruns by creating social editions of shows, and its newest series, "Around the World in 80 Plates," premiering tonight, already has plenty of buzz because of a Twitter contest.
