Creative Control explores the dark side of augmented reality—with humor

Creative Control explores the dark side of augmented reality—with humor | Transmedia Worlds | Scoop.it
Review: The story of an ad exec and his AR rig feels more like reality than science fiction.

Via Gary Hayes
Transmedia-SocialTV's insight:
Quote "This might sound like yet another melancholic take on how technology is ruining our lives, but it's not. Creative Control is fast-paced and funny. Most of the scenes, even when they show an intense or stressful moment between characters, are embedded with humor. Dickinson admits that he borrowed heavily from the 1979 Woody Allen film Manhattan. Creative Control, like Manhattan, centers around a small group of friends who work in creative fields in New York, is filmed in black and white, and uses a strictly classical music soundtrack. (One greatly appreciated change from the Allen film: the lead character is not dating an underage girl.) These touches don’t feel derivative or out-of-place. Instead, they make the film’s subject matter lighter and more palpable."

#VR Presence - This Startup Is Solving Virtual Reality's Biggest Problem

Quote "In another experiment, AltspaceVR is hosting live stand-up routinesfeaturing talents from Jash, a comedy network founded by Sarah Silverman, Michael Cera, and Reggie Watts. The events have the potential to show just how real virtual reality is. Perhaps more than any other performing art, stand-up comedy is something you have to see with others to fully appreciate. For the audience, that “you had to be there” element will be in effect. But will it be enough? There’s something about the guy laughing uncontrollably behind you at a comedy show that can tickle your funny bone even more than the actual joke. But the question is, can you virtually catch a case of the giggles?"

Vivalist's curator insight, January 20, 3:33 AM

"It’s developing a virtual reality platform in which people can connect with one another in a kind of digital lobby."

It's an interesting step towards the "real" change with VR: remote presence - eventually leaving the "lobby" to join a Metaverse

If you consider functionalities such as 3D  full body scanning as shown at CES 2016 by http://8i.com/, you quickly see where it is heading. And this is the real disruption... a parallel world.

Simon Staffans:  "An engaged and loyal audience has become the holy grail in the TV industry. How can you create it?"

Kajsa Hartig's curator insight, August 2, 2015 5:00 PM

"

In the television industry we’re very much about controlling most parts of a production. Not only that, there’s often so much to control that we turn into control freaks – everything in order to keep the schedule, keep the budget and keep ourselves sane. Today though, this does not mirror the way the world works, just as the TV schedule in the back of the newspaper no longer reflects how people are accessing content today. An exciting – if daunting – way of mirroring the real world and giving the audience a meaningful part in your content is to intentionally break part of your IP and/or your story. Then let the audience piece it back together in whatever way they see fit and celebrate their efforts and end result. This could be a narrative that is intentionally left unfinished with clear prompts for the audience to fill in as storytellers, a flawed character that needs to be pieced back together, or something else. The key is to step back and trust the audience to take good – if chaotic – care of the story world they’ve grown to love and the narrative strands you’ve left hanging for them.

Esther D. Kustanowitz:  "A new transmedia website provides fresh content that expands the narrative world that will be established in June 2015's "Jurassic World" movie."

Dominique Taste's curator insight, February 9, 2015 1:39 PM

Great reading for the low end of Youth - those still considering a place to study. This is a success story with lots of advice that appears sound to me.

It also speaks to an emerging career choice - one that is actually a modification of an earlier career choice. This modification will, I think, pull in  more candidates because it is both much broader in scope and pulls at the strings of many young minds - opportunity for self expression in a job that both pays well if you are talented and has a future.

It also references something but doesn't include any link to the reference. A talented youth will find it but sometimes it takes a kick in the l*9% to get some moving. It is practical advice from another success on being prepared for the market and it can be found at http://idealog.co.nz/design/2014/07/classroom-client. The title is From Classroom to Client. It is also worth a read.

Named The Caretaker, a simple download of the VR game will enable you to assume the role that Nicholson did in the film, 'high in the mountains and cut off from the world by the onset of the first snowstorms of winter.'

Before too long, you'll be integrated into instantly recognisable locations from the film including the iconic carpeted hallway and the snowy maze outside, centre of the film's climactic showdown."

Kate Abrosimova:  "The craft of storytelling is experiencing a sea-change in its development. Putting a viewer in the event directly with the help of virtual reality technology is what journalists are likely to be doing in the next decade."

Minna Kilpeläinen's curator insight, January 12, 2015 4:35 PM

If journalists want to raise real awareness of what is going on in the world, they can´t just offer the audience facts and images.  They also have to give possibilities to feel the reality. Nonny de la Peña´s Project Syria is a great example of it.

Mervi Rauhala's curator insight, January 13, 2015 1:42 AM
