For the most part, trying to design tech for women ends up, well-meaning or not, assuming women are dumber than men. Which is a dumb assumption.

While many legislators seem intent on narrowing women's access to affordable care, individuals and foundations still work to expand it. Such is the mission of Dana Dornsife. As the Komen-Planned Parenthood conflict spun into the forefront of feminist consciousness last month—with the possibility that poor women and women of color might lose access to cancer screening—I felt grateful to another organization that pays special attention to the healthcare needs of low-income minority women. Dana Dornsife, after tirelessly researching lifesaving clinical drug trials for a loved one with pancreatic cancer, founded the Lazarex Cancer Foundation in 2006. Lazarex initially focused solely on connecting end stage cancer patients with the latest medical breakthroughs via clinical drug trials. While pursuing this mission, Dornsife discovered that women of color make up less than 2 percent of the total population that participate in clinical trials for cancer treatment. This finding raised a red flag for Dornsife, who knew that a patient’s response to a particular drug can be dependent on their specific ethnic background.
@transmediawoman: What a honor to introduce Sister to Sister Greeting Card Artist Naomi Robinson. Check out this interview with Inside The Books. Hello Everyone, How are you doing? Welcome to Inside The Books. This is JMcManus with another post for you. Today’s post will introduce you to mixed media artist Naomi Robinson. Born in Notting Hill, West London, United Kingdom, Naomi Robinson always loved drawing. Her mother said she started drawing as soon as she could pick up a crayon. Around the age of six she remembers getting a box of 36 oil crayons and an oversized sketchbook and nearly finishing the entire sketchbook in one day. She loved to draw clowns and was fascinated with the colors, clothing, and face painting. Read More: http://www.insidethebooks.com/2012/02/25/whos-behind-the-greeting-cards-series-sister-to-sister/

Jessie Klein, author of "The Bully Society," writes that girls need help in building trusting relationships.Girls get called “slut” every day. My students are so used to getting bullied and harassed they can’t imagine a school without bullying. A student in one of my classes once said, “Get over it.” They look at me like I’m some kind of crazy pollyanna professor when I suggest that it doesn’t have to be that way. The repercussions are growing however, even as students become more resigned. Social isolation has tripled since the eighties according to the 2004 General Social Survey. Depression occurs at increasingly younger ages; 1 out of 3 high school girls are depressed, and 29 percent of all teenagers. Anxiety is so high among children that psychologist Jean M. Twenge wrote that children considered “normal in the eighties were substantially more anxious than child psychiatric patients in the 1950s!” No wonder children are becoming resigned—their highly disturbing emotional stress is considered “just fine.” It’s not though. And kids are dying. They are being killed in school shootings and they are committing suicide. Every year we hear about youth who were bullied so badly they took their own life. There is a culture of despair in schools.

A Tribute to Whitney Houston – The Songbird Is Caged No More Posted by: Tia Parchman Posted date: February 20, 2012 In: Music From her seven #1 Billboard singles to her first leading role in “The Bodyguard”, we fell in love with her. During those rough years when she was battling with her drug addiction under the constant scrutiny of the public eye, we prayed and rooted for her recovery. Now we are two months into the 2012 year, hardly finishing out the month of February, and at this moment in time the world misses and mourns her. If you don’t know, or haven’t heard by now, the woman I’m talking about is the legendary, late, great songstress Whitney Houston. She was found unresponsive and pronounced deceased in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on February 11; just one day before she was to appear at the Grammys. I Look To You Lyrics As I lay me down Heaven hear me now I’m lost without a cause After giving it my all Winter storms have come And darkened my sun After all that I’ve been through Who on earth can I turn to? Chorus: I look to you, I look to you After all my strength is gone In you I can be strong aI look to you, I look to you And when melodies are gone In you I hear a song I look to you 'bout to lose my breath There's no more fighting left Sinking to rise no more Searching for that open door And every road that I've taken Led to my regret And I don't know if I'm go'n make it Nothing to do but lift my head Chorus: My levees are broken My walls are coming down on me My rain is falling Defeat is calling I need you to set me free Take me far away from the battle I need you Shine on me!
