Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, June 9, 2013 1:32 PM

Great insights from Cailin Burns on the intersection of games and television series in anticipation of Spielberg's collaboration on a live-action Halo series.  In games, however, players become owners of the story through their individual actions and choices within the narrative in the play process.  Will that translate to television because of the rich storyworld alone or does it demand a fluid playing-watching dual platform (game to television) experience, such as Defiance to make a successful transition?  Just finding out is exploring a new world.

Transmedia Companies Want 'Story-Driven' Tech People... Campfire, Social Samba - Dice News

Transmedia Companies Want 'Story-Driven' Tech People... Campfire, Social Samba - Dice News | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

'The entertainment business is engaged in nothing less than the reinvention of narrative, and the leading edge is something called transmedia.

It’s in this corner of storytelling that a next wave of developers, gamers, filmmakers, writers and composers are creating immersive story-telling experiences that employ a variety of media, delivered across platforms. But here, “cross platform” means more than just on your console one minute and your smartphone the next. It means on your phone, your PC, your iPod, your TV, in the theater.

Who’s Doing It?

Companies engaged in transmedia can be grouped into three general sectors. First, there are native companies whose focus is original content across mediums. Next are marketing companies who create a wide range of original content around an existing product — think Game of Thrones or Hunger Games. And finally are the tech businesses who create platforms that other people can use to distribute content across mediums....'

Using picture-in-picture social and search components embedded in whatever viewing screen each person is using at the moment, everyone in the circle will be able to chat by video, voice and/or text (including seeing all participants in separate windows via webcam); chat with others using social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn; and conduct online searches for information related to the program or commercial they're watching -- all without switching devices."

With Dan Brown’s new novel Inferno coming out soon, the Toronto-based eReader manufacturer Kobo saw it as the perfect opportunity to launch a narrative-driven puzzle contest called The Descent. The contest is designed to reacquaint readers with the themes of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy that will feature heavily in Brown’s newest exploration in symbology. To provide the framework for The Descent, Kobo brought inauthor J.F. Penn to write three short stories exploring three sins: the Sins of Temptation, the Sins of Violence, and the Sins of Treachery. Each short story is offered free for the Kobo eReader or as an EPUB for reading on your desktop, eReader, or mobile devices..."

Really interesting shift underway:

"Trend driven by consumers

From a consumers perspective, the mid-core gaming market segment is comprised of players looking for a more in-depth experience than a casual game, yet one that is not as time-consuming as a core game. The potential for mid-core games is often backed up by the fact that former core players who, as they start families and careers, no longer have as much time to devote to playing and also includes casual gamers who desire a more immersive experience. As mid-core games typically have no steep learning curve, players can step into a game, immediately start playing and then leave as soon as other duties call. It doesn’t require 40 hours a week to build your character and have a great play experience, but it is an experience that is less repetitive and more immersive than a casual game.

Newzoo’s CEO, Peter Warman, comments: ‘It’s a very interesting segment of the market because in the increasingly competitive market is has a potential double digit growth outlook, and it’s directly related to other trends, including the rising numbers of mobile and tablet players, the quality of game experiences on these devices, connected TVs and cross-screen gaming.’..."

Much has been written about the Knowledge Graph, and how Semantic SEO is important to the long term success of websites and web presences. On the other hand, we have existing best practices for organic SEO targeting.

Google has repeatedly gone on record saying that they want to evolve from a search engine to a knowledge engine, where they can rank content according to intent rather than straight keyword matching.

Let’s look at all of the key areas of organic SEO, to consider what role it plays in ranking and how it might feed into this knowledge engine concept in the future.

Karen Goldfarb Copywriter's comment, June 26, 2013 12:59 PM
I've got no issues with guns per se. It's their easy availability and how low the bar is set for access, ownership and responsibility when in possession that I've got a problem with. I use the CNN app every night to keep up on the news and I swear, every week, there's a story about a toddler who either shoots him/herself (one last night--a five year old girl), his or her sibling or a parent. When the bar is set that low, that's a problem.

The fictional story (had to emphasise its fictionality) has its characters setting up their own Facebook pages and interacting with real-life people as well as other character pages of family and friends. Clues are given everyday that unravel the mystery of who’s the captor, what is he (or she) doing to Christina, what’s the motive and other information that will have you on the edge of your seat.

I’ve been playing along for a few days and it’s a never-ending goose chase connecting the captor’s clues, random things in Christina’s room and the backstories of all the characters. It does get messy at times, but it makes for fun entertainment once you get hooked onto the story and realise that you’re slowly living the world Christina and her family are in."

If you look at the industry in which content curation tools and services have had the most leeway so far, that would be positively fashion, and, in my impression, by a good margin over the rapidly growing education/learning sector.

The fashion industry has embraced digital curation wholeheartedly more than any other sector so far, because of its strong visual element (the same one that has popularized the curation concept thanks to tools like Pinterest), and thanks to the natural inclination that fashion customers have for picking, collecting and sharing their unique preferences and combinations.

In this visual collection I have brought together the most interesting examples of curation at work in the world of fashion. Tools, services, communities, brands and products, all working together to filter, aggregate, pick and create relevant "selections" for the infinite number of tribes out there.
