Players Decode Time-Traveling Messages in LA ARG | Wired Magazine | Wired.com | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

For the past month, Transmedia LA has been running an alternate-reality game out of Los Angeles’ Miracle Mile as a Kickstarter-funded experiment in game development for its members. The game centers around the Time Switch, a device that receives transmissions from the past.

By Brandie Minchew, originally posted at ARGNet

Something very strange happened to Rexford Higgs back in March. An aficionado of wondrous artifacts and things from bygone days, Rex uncovered by chance a set of blueprints for a strange device, hidden in a tin box in a construction site near LA’s Miracle Mile. Fascinated by his find, Rex launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the building of his Time Switch. This campaign was used by Transmedia L.A. to serve as the real-world Kickstarter campaign to fund Rexford Higgs’ story as an alternate reality game, The Miracle Mile Paradox. Transmedia L.A., a monthly meetup group of people in the Los Angeles area interested in transmedia storytelling, is using The Miracle Mile Paradox as an experiment in alternate reality game development for its members....

Pinterest UX Strikes Social Commerce Gold | UX Magazine

Pinterest UX Strikes Social Commerce Gold | UX Magazine | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

......I came up with seven reasons why the Pinterest user experience will outperform its social commerce competitors:

It's About Stuff
It's Simple
It's Social
It's Personal
It's Beautiful
It's Functional
It's Mobile

Let's explore these traits.

It's About Stuff

Facebook is about relationships. The implication of being friends on Facebook (or connections on Linked In for that matter) is that there is a relationship already in place, or that a relationship could be desirable in the future. Pinterest, on the other hand, unabashedly serves up a seemingly endless stream of desirable objects. Sure, there are some puppies and celebrities, but there are many, many images of products that you can buy or dream about buying.

While Pinterest does a superb job of highlighting desirable objects, it somehow avoids the stigma of being crass or commercial. The comments in Pinterest state, in thousands of different ways, something similar to: "This makes me happy, and I want to share it with you." The association of products with intense positive emotions has been the dream of marketers since the golden days of the 1950s. And now, in a time of rapid decline of traditional marketing approaches and venues, consumers are themselves making those associations, using the Pinterest user experience as their preferred channel of expression. When Pinterest users share their favorite products, it seems natural ... expected. By contrast, attempts by Facebook to introduce commerce have seemed suspect, out of place, or even invasive....

‘Prometheus’ Screenwriter Damon Lindelof Tweets All on Viral Campaign

‘Prometheus’ Screenwriter Damon Lindelof Tweets All on Viral Campaign | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

Scene from “Prometheus.”

“Prometheus” screenwriter Damon Lindelof (creator of the hit show “Lost”) on the movie's social media campaign--and some of the secrets of the screenplay.

Before filming even began on Ridley Scott’s summer blockbuster “Prometheus” screenwriter Damon Lindelof (creator of the hit show “Lost”) suggested exploiting the power of social media to help answer audiences’ mounting questions about the mysterious plot of the film. The problem: 20th Century Fox was insisting the sci-fi epic bore absolutely no relation to Mr. Scott’s “Alien” franchise, but “our position was that this was not entirely the case,” says Mr. Lindelof, who has about 200,000 Twitter followers and tweets several times a day.

To help convince fans that there was, in fact, a link to “Alien” without giving away any of the film’s secrets, Mr. Lindelof proposed creating a series of original viral videos to be released online. The videos, which were shared and viewed millions of times, were part of an elaborate social media strategy that the studio used to help drum up enthusiasm about the movie long before it was released. (Read more about how social media is helping boost box office results in today’s Wall Street Journal here.)

“The real key of these campaigns is getting fans on board, but getting them on board where there’s material they can share with their friends,” says Ira Rubenstein, Fox’s EVP of digital.

The first video, which debuted at the well-known TED conference in February 2012, four months before the release of the movie, featured fictitious industrialist Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) giving a talk at the conference in the year 2023. It was an instant hit, causing #Weyland—the sinister corporate entity that ran the world in the “Alien” franchise—to become a trending topic on Twitter. By the time the movie came out the viral videos had gotten millions of views and were shared across social media platforms....

The Valtari Mystery Film Experiment - Sigur Ros' 6th Album goesTransmedia

The Valtari Mystery Film Experiment - Sigur Ros' 6th Album goesTransmedia | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

Transmedia "in the way" of Icelandic Post-Rock Musicians To those who know what Valtari is, this post won't be even a little bit new to them (or maybe it will...who knows nowadays) but, for those who don't, they might be pleasantly surprised by the ingenuity of its creators.

Valtari is the sixth music album by the Icelandic (post-rock) band Sigur Rós.

Musically it's similar to most of the sound coming from the band (specially its frontman Jonsi) even being described by their bassist as a non-functional album (at least in its conception). When information about it started to come out early this year, people started worrying that the band (coming from a 3 year hiatus), was becoming tired creatively - a fear that was never confirmed.
Hmmm... waaaiiiittt.....

Finding Your People: Why Filmmakers Should be on Tumblr... Now | Future of Film

Finding Your People: Why Filmmakers Should be on Tumblr... Now | Future of Film | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

Filmmakers, are you tapping your full potential when it comes to social media marketing? If you aren't on Tumblr, says the Center for Social Media, then the answer is a resounding "No." Their advice: Find, tag, respond, and reblog, all with a personal slant....

Consider this…

1. People on Tumblr LOVE to discuss movies and filmmakers.
They love to share information about movies and filmmakers. They post trailers and clips and encourage people to see films. They do all this, without prompting or the request of the filmmakers, but out of their genuine enthusiasm for film or topic. Need proof? Search the Tumblr tags for THE BULLY PROJECT, BYRON HURT, GASLAND or HOW TO DIE IN OREGON. As far as I can tell, none of these films/filmmakers have created a Tumblr presence on their own. Tumblr’s documentary enthusiasts, however, have built one for these and many other films/filmmakers. All this is to say—your film is out there, being discussed online, without you having to make a shred of effort—think of how much more discussion would be cultivated, and how much more meaningful that discussion would be, if you were participating in it!...

Like: A History of the Internet Told Through Retro Movie Sites

Like: A History of the Internet Told Through Retro Movie Sites | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

Unlike most Internet destinations, official movie websites are useful for a brief moment in time—making them a perfect capsule of a specific moment in Internet history. Yet, unlike a Times Square billboard, these sites (at least sometimes) neither get revamped nor get taken down because space out here is seemingly infinite and comparatively cheap. When faced with a choice to take down or continue hosting a site, movie studios probably figure, why bother removing them at all?

Thus we get these neglected pieces of Internet floating around the Web, like this untouched You've Got Mail site, which came to our attention through Twitter following writer-director Nora Ephron's death Tuesday. With its 1998 release date, the website gives us a frozen-in-amber look at the what 1998 Internet looked like. (And this site is oh-so 1998.)...

The Netocracy is coming (you better be ready)

The Netocracy is coming (you better be ready) | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

We are in the middle of a social revolution spawned by the possibilities of the Internet and its democratization that gives 2 billion humans the possibility to obtain information, interact and develop ideas. This process has given birth to a collaborative web (2.0) as people realized they could get connected to each other as much as to websites....

..The unlimited and virtually free access to information as well as the possibility to communicate, to develop new ideas and to organize social change has empowered the citizen to the point that governments and corporations have grown nervous, rightfully feeling that their importance and power are being undermined.

Through laws like ACTA, SOPA or PIPA, they have tried to limit this empowerment. Thus many Internet users have become politicized, feeling the intrusion of political and economic interests in the form of surveillance, censorship and the crackdown on sharing. Online activism (hacktivism), once the domain of politicized hackers and tech-savvy human rights activists, has become democratized as people have come in contact with the easy to use tools and ideology of the Free Internet.

This exponential development together with the Internet’s inherent possibility of a hive-like existence spawned Anonymous, as we know it today. Loosely knitted hacktivist networks like Telecomix, massively popular Facebook pages like We Are All Khaled Said, and masses of angry and politicized Internet users behind their Guy Fawkes masks might be the face of the web 3.0 and also the advent of the netocracy...

THINK: A film about making the world work better - IBM

Four distinct stories of progress show how a challenge once considered unsolvable was addressed: Sending a man to the moon, sequencing the rice genome, making medicine personal and reducing traffic congestion. Across the diversity of these examples, the film reveals how progress was made possible by a combination of people and technology, and by taking a distinct approach to making the world work better -- seeing, mapping, understanding, believing and acting. Today, this very approach can be used to tackle challenges large and small. This film was originally presented in an immersive experience on forty 85" screens in the IBM THINK Exhibit located at Lincoln Center in New York, NY from September 23 through October 23rd, 2011....

Or for that matter, what do you think can really change and move things forward in both the near and distant future? If we could ask five key people what they saw on our various horizons, what would they show us? Who should we ask? One of the great things about being pointed in a direction, is that it is almost a path. Could we have walked down that road when Francis Ford Coppola predicted YouTube in 1991....

Inside Minority Report‘s ‘Idea Summit,’ Visionaries Saw the Future

Inside Minority Report‘s ‘Idea Summit,’ Visionaries Saw the Future | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

The year was 1999, and Steven Spielberg was preparing to turn Philip K. Dick’s short story “The Minority Report” into a $100 million action movie starring Tom Cruise. There was just one problem: The story was set in the undated future, and the director had no idea what that future should look like. He wanted the world of the movie to be different from our own, but he also wanted to avoid the exaggerated and often dystopian speculation that plagued most science fiction.

Instead, he wanted his film to be a realistic depiction of how things might actually look in 50 years. So Spielberg convened an ad hoc think tank: He invited a small group of the foremost thinkers in science and technology, along with a handful of people involved with the movie, to hang out for a weekend and talk about the future....

To mark the 10th anniversary of Minority Report‘s June 21 release, Wired spoke to more than a dozen people who were at the so-called “idea summit” that delved deep into the future. As participant Joel Garreau recalls, “I don’t think many of us knew what the fuck we were getting ourselves into.”
