Experiencing 'Girls' Withdrawal? Here are the 14 Best Female-Centered Web Series

Experiencing 'Girls' Withdrawal? Here are the 14 Best Female-Centered Web Series | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

"HBO's "Girls" and broadcast sitcoms like "The Mindy Project" and "The New Girl" push the envelope on female representations on television, but they aren't the only ones in the game of bringing complicated depictions of women to your screen.

Online stories about women are quite rich as well and have been for years. A year after "lonelygirl15" rose to fame by giving geek boys their ultimate cam girl, Felicia Day's "The Guild" delivered a counter-punch: a serious awkward, geek girl, a trend that persists today. Major networks put women at the center of genre stories, as NBC did with "Gemini Division" and MTV did with "Valemont." Indie creators build out niches: "Anyone But Me"'s told the story of serious teen girls who were very seriously in love. "Awkward Black Girl" gave black women a complicated lead before "Scandal," and with natural hair to boot.

And now that we have to wait a few months until Lena Dunham and friends are back on HBO, it's the perfect time to catch up on the best in female-centric web series today.  Here are 14 of the best...."

What Netflix's Epic Quarter Means for the Future of TV. Warning? Don't raise subscription cost

What Netflix's Epic Quarter Means for the Future of TV. Warning? Don't raise subscription cost | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

"The television business isn't endangered. It's growing. And the result is great news for anybody who loves TV....

Did "House of Cards" lure 2 million more people, alone? No. We don't know how many Netflix subscribers watched the series, and we certainly don't know what share of the new subs joined just specifically because of the Kevin Spacey vehicle.

So what did "House of Cards" really buy? Allegiance. Nearly 90 percent of Netflix subscribers said "House of Cards" made them less likely to cancel, according to a survey by Cowen and Co. But here's what "House of Cards" doesn't get Netflix: the right to raise prices. Two-thirds of subscribers said they'd bolt Netflix if they raised the monthly price..."

With Repost, you can distribute your content to other publishers, bloggers, and websites. You can also discover a broad range of content to repost on your own site. Whether you’re distributing, discovering, or both, why do you need Repost? That’s easy: More readers, more reach, more revenue.

Repost: it’s syndication reimagined; it’s the wire service reinvented; it’s changing the way content goes viral."

Excerpted from review article on Mashable:
"Repost.Us, a free service that launched earlier this week, provides publishers with a platform to share and embed full articles in the same way that YouTube lets users embed video clips. Websites can add a Repost button to their articles, which others can click on to re-publish all of the content in the article — along with videos, the original publisher's advertising and branding, and any updates to the article that occur afterwards. Repost also provides a directory of content that publishers can search through and publish on their own website.

In short, the goal for Repost, is to make it easy for big and small publishers to profit from sharing complete articles as it is for content producers to share and profit from videos using the embed code from websites like YouTube..."

Three gaming experiences are presented to explore the world of typography. First, there is a video game (accessible via web browser, smartphone or tablet) which spans the history of typography, with each level to a different typographical style, from “Gothic” to “Pixel.”

The game is quite easy to play and operate. The player must guide the colon through a given level from start to finish by collecting the asterisks that block the documents posted concerning typography and its history. These documents include accounts of inventors like Gutenberg and famous type designers like Claude Garamond or Étiennne Didot....

Thanks to 3D-printing technology, Eric Moger is getting his life back. Four years ago, doctors detected a massive tumor growing beneath the skin on his face. They successfully removed the cancerous growth, but were also forced to remove most of the entire left side of his face.

After the lifesaving procedure, the British restaurant manager had a gaping hole where his eye, cheek bone, and part of his jaw had been. Moger would have gone on to live the rest of his life with half his face missing.

Nicholas Kalavrezos—the surgeon who removed his tumor—referred Moger to Dr. Andrew Dawood, a dental surgeon and implant specialist. Dawood had previously experimented with 3D printing by recreating his patients' jaws and practicing surgical procedures on them...."

Ready for a Social TV Lab? New Deal Between Twitter And Starcom MediaVest Intended To “Reshape The Future Of The Industry” | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

Twitter continues to forge closer ties with the marketing world with the announcement of a major new deal with Publicis media unit Starcom MediaVest Group.Terms of the deal, the first of its kind between Twitter and a giant media buying and planning entity, aren’t being discussed in detail but it is described as a multiyear agreement worth hundreds of millions of dollars. According to Starcom MediaVest CEO Laura Desmond, the two companies were looking “to create a partnership that would shape the future of the industry.”...

... the heart of the deal was more about the decision to cocreate three major initiatives.

The first is a social TV lab: “Our team and Bluefin Labs (which Twitter purchased earlier this year) will come together, put mutual skin in game, and create a social TV lab that we think will give our clients unprecedented real-time data on how consumers are watching, buying and the conversations that amplify brand messages."

Second, an in-tweet mobile survey-- “real time dipstick measurement of what people are watching and thinking and doing,” says Desmond--that will yield data that can be used to shape messaging...."

The ‘Snow Fall’ effect and dissecting the multimedia longform narrative | MultimediaShooter | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

By Jeremy Rue

“It’s become a verb in our newsroom,” a New York Times graphics producer tells me. “People are now saying, ‘can we snowfall this story?’”

Snow Fall: The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek has become a watershed in multimedia journalism. The story by John Branch recently won a Pulitzer prize in feature writing, and as noted by the Pulitzer website it was “a project enhanced by its deft integration of multimedia elements."

As a journalism educator, I’m constantly collecting links to examples of stories that attempt innovate and redefine the narrative form online. For years, story structures online have mostly been a repurposing of legacy formats — TV, radio and print. While we are starting to see the journalism industry leverage digital media in very powerful ways, more often it’s a complementary component to a more traditional story structure. For example, you might see an interactive graphic or map or audio slideshow off to the side of a text story.

Then came Snow Fall.

It was posted on the front page of the NYTimes.com website in late 2012. The day it published, I received a dozen e-mails from faculty members, students and non-journalism colleagues with messages akin to ‘Hey, did you see this?’..."

Graph Search Optimization: The New SEO and What it Means for Social Advertisers

Graph Search Optimization: The New SEO and What it Means for Social Advertisers | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

To determine which pages are relevant to a search query, Facebook utilizes a natural language processor (both to suggest search terms and identify connections) combined with algorithms that examine the “nodes” or connections of a searcher’s network to find content friends have “liked” that match the search. Graph Search can also consider second-degree connections or friends of friends, as well as content which has been shared either directly with the searcher or publicly on Facebook.

Unlike standard search engines, Facebook owns all of the data (page posts, photos, videos, etc.)which has ever been posted to the network. This inherent advantage enabled Facebook to implement a unique indexing structure to categorize the data based on a number of predefined properties. This indexing of owned data allows Facebook to quickly search, sort, identify and return relevant content.

They dubbed this infrastructure “Unicorn.” Similar to a standard search engine, it supports search queries including “multi-hop” queries in a series of steps while searching “nodes” in a similar style to the way a search engine utilizes keywords.

That was not the first time an Instagram-edited photo has been printed by a news outlet, but it was one of the most visible to date.

Laham shot a series of portraits in a bathroom. He didn't have much of a choice. "I wasn't given the option of studio or bathroom stall and decided on the latter," Laham wrote on his blog. Some reports state that social indicators (shares, retweets, +1’s) are already more important than incoming links.

This isn’t exactly news, as we’ve seen Google systematically destroy search manipulators for the past couple of years. While it isn’t exactly headline material, it does show that the future of search is a blend between traditional organic search and social media.

Social Dominance & New SEO
I wrote Storytelling is the New SEO (http://www.slideshare.net/martinmartysmith/storytelling-new-seo ) because we play for shares. If we play for shares some content, the content capable of generating shares, is more important than other content.

This is especially true in the case of "social search" or Facebook's new "graph search" that moves technical SEO to the backseat as social search drives the car. Because when you are in a car looking for pizza you don't care about technical SEO. You care about what tastes good :).

If that is the case, then the WAY we generate content needs to change. We need to CURATE more since our curation sends the "we are listening and care about someone's take other than our own" signal and because we can test with curation and then confirm with creation.

Storytelling is the new SEO has almost 7,000 views so it struck a nerve. The nerve it struck is our attempts at understanding the new SEO, the more social SEO the SEO dominated by social signals.
