Graph Search Optimization: The New SEO and What it Means for Social Advertisers

Graph Search Optimization: The New SEO and What it Means for Social Advertisers | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

To determine which pages are relevant to a search query, Facebook utilizes a natural language processor (both to suggest search terms and identify connections) combined with algorithms that examine the “nodes” or connections of a searcher’s network to find content friends have “liked” that match the search. Graph Search can also consider second-degree connections or friends of friends, as well as content which has been shared either directly with the searcher or publicly on Facebook.

Unlike standard search engines, Facebook owns all of the data (page posts, photos, videos, etc.)which has ever been posted to the network. This inherent advantage enabled Facebook to implement a unique indexing structure to categorize the data based on a number of predefined properties. This indexing of owned data allows Facebook to quickly search, sort, identify and return relevant content.

They dubbed this infrastructure “Unicorn.” Similar to a standard search engine, it supports search queries including “multi-hop” queries in a series of steps while searching “nodes” in a similar style to the way a search engine utilizes keywords.

Take Note: Instagram and Vine Shake Up News Industry

Take Note: Instagram and Vine Shake Up News Industry | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

"News as we know it is poised to change, and it's in the hands of smartphone users. On March 31, the New York Times ran a photo of New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez taken by sports photographer Nick Laham — on his iPhone and edited in Instagram. That was not the first time an Instagram-edited photo has been printed by a news outlet, but it was one of the most visible to date.

Laham shot a series of portraits in a bathroom. He didn't have much of a choice. "I wasn't given the option of studio or bathroom stall and decided on the latter," Laham wrote on his blog. "I joined the chain of photographers at 6 a.m. in the confines of the New York Yankees' spring training facility in Tampa, and took what space I could get and worked with it..."

The Future of SEO Is Social

The Future of SEO Is Social | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

Some reports state that social indicators (shares, retweets, +1’s) are already more important than incoming links.

This isn’t exactly news, as we’ve seen Google systematically destroy search manipulators for the past couple of years. While it isn’t exactly headline material, it does show that the future of search is a blend between traditional organic search and social media.

Social Dominance & New SEO
I wrote Storytelling is the New SEO (http://www.slideshare.net/martinmartysmith/storytelling-new-seo ) because we play for shares. If we play for shares some content, the content capable of generating shares, is more important than other content.

This is especially true in the case of "social search" or Facebook's new "graph search" that moves technical SEO to the backseat as social search drives the car. Because when you are in a car looking for pizza you don't care about technical SEO. You care about what tastes good :).

If that is the case, then the WAY we generate content needs to change. We need to CURATE more since our curation sends the "we are listening and care about someone's take other than our own" signal and because we can test with curation and then confirm with creation.

Storytelling is the new SEO has almost 7,000 views so it struck a nerve. The nerve it struck is our attempts at understanding the new SEO, the more social SEO the SEO dominated by social signals.

Must Catch: Immersive theatre company reinterprets Kafka's The Trial for digital age (Wired UK)

Must Catch: Immersive theatre company reinterprets Kafka's The Trial for digital age (Wired UK) | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it
An immersive theatre company called Retz has reinterpreted two of Franz Kafka's works -- The Trial and In The Penal Colony -- for the internet age in an interactive performance that sees audience members travel around East London.

The production is a large-scale interactive story where audience members follow protagonist Joseph K through a series of locations in East London (including Shoreditch Town Hall and the Rose Lipman building) as he comes to terms with his mysterious arrest. Audience members experience the story in a series of one-on-one encounters with some of the 47 cast members and find themselves lured into helping Joseph K. What they say to the actors will be noted, disseminated via the web, and potentially used against them by other cast members at a later moment.

Retz founder Felix Mortimer told Wired.co.uk: "The actors and stage manager all use Twitter accounts set to private to quickly communicate pictures and information about audience members to each other and subtly thread it into performance. I suppose it's a database on the fly and a good way to tag and keep track of our audience members and quickly make them feel like they are bleeding digital information -- which is the main thrust of the piece." The team also uses Twilio for making phone calls during the performance..."

Visual.ly’s new Google Analytics tool sends you weekly Web metric reports as infographics | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

"We're big fans of Visual.ly here at TNW, ever since it launched as the home of data visualization and infographics way back in July 2011.

The platform has evolved somewhat since then, launching Visual.ly Create for users to create their own infographics with ease, before going on to roll out a complete redesign with social features last July. And then in October, Visually unveiled a new marketplace to help put its community of infographic designers to work

So, when we got wind of Visual.ly’s latest launch, naturally we were all ears (well, eyes). The Israeli startup has launched a new visual reporting tool designed to bring Google Analytics to your email inbox courtesy of a weekly infographic....

Excellent Post: Five Different Routes to a Web Series | Filmmaker Magazine | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

"The web series can take many shapes, from a no-budget serial made in high-school media classes to Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog to  Netflix’s long-format House of Cards. These are just three of probably thousands of web series out there produced, written, and directed specifically for the Internet. But there are other roads to web series. Here are five of them.

The Longish Short Film Repurposed into a Web Series

Filmmaking partners Jacob Hensberry and Ken Cook had plan for their short film, Planet X, a stylized, modern romantic comedy with sci-fi leanings. “We were going to use the traditional formula of making a short, getting into some festivals, getting some attention and turning it into a feature,” director Hensberry said. But Cook, his writing and producer partner, knew there was a problem. “I immediately knew that we were screwed on the festival front. [Planet X was] too long and it has a cliffhanger ending..."

TYPE:RIDER Video game, documentary, installation... New #ARTE #transmedia project. Trendscape Blog on Canada Media Fund [video] | The_storyFormula: story worlds & wearables! | Scoop.it

ARTE France and its associated producers continue to explore web documentary, participatory fiction, online magazine and many other transmedia creative formats. Among these, Type:Rider is an outstanding example – both in its subject matter and its auteurist vision of video game design.

Three gaming experiences are presented to explore the world of typography. First, there is a video game (accessible via web browser, smartphone or tablet) which spans the history of typography, with each level to a different typographical style, from “Gothic” to “Pixel.”

The game is quite easy to play and operate. The player must guide the colon through a given level from start to finish by collecting the asterisks that block the documents posted concerning typography and its history. These documents include accounts of inventors like Gutenberg and famous type designers like Claude Garamond or Étiennne Didot....

Thanks to 3D-printing technology, Eric Moger is getting his life back. Four years ago, doctors detected a massive tumor growing beneath the skin on his face. They successfully removed the cancerous growth, but were also forced to remove most of the entire left side of his face.

After the lifesaving procedure, the British restaurant manager had a gaping hole where his eye, cheek bone, and part of his jaw had been. Moger would have gone on to live the rest of his life with half his face missing.

Nicholas Kalavrezos—the surgeon who removed his tumor—referred Moger to Dr. Andrew Dawood, a dental surgeon and implant specialist. Dawood had previously experimented with 3D printing by recreating his patients' jaws and practicing surgical procedures on them...."
