Futures of Entertainment 5 - MIT

Futures of Entertainment 5 - MIT | Transmedia Talks | Scoop.it

The Futures of Entertainment is an annual event which explores the current state and future of media properties, brands, and audiences and the way these groups interact and intersect with one another. By combining a mix of leading media studies scholars and cutting-edge media and marketing practitioners from a diverse range of locations and sectors–in conjunction with fans, activists, journalists, analysts, and other voices–in lengthy discussion, this two-day conference explores how the media industries are evolving, how storytelling is changing and the shifting dynamics in how people relate to media properties and brands.

In addition to this cornerstone event, the core researchers and practitioners that comprise the Futures of Entertainment community collaborate throughout the year and provide a steady stream of individual and collaborative work aimed at addressing many of the issues tackled at the conference. The Futures of Entertainment website provides a home for updates on the research and publications of FoE Fellows, the Futures of Entertainment conference, and its sister event, Transmedia Hollywood, which is a collaboration between the University of Southern California and the University of California-Los Angeles.

Futures of Entertainment 4 - The Convergence Culture Consortium - 2009 MIT

Futures of Entertainment 4 - The Convergence Culture Consortium - 2009 MIT | Transmedia Talks | Scoop.it

Futures of Entertainment is a presentation of the Convergence Culture Consortium.

The Convergence Culture Consortium (C3) explores the ways the business landscape is changing in response to the growing integration of content and brands across media platforms and the increasingly prominent roles that consumers are playing in shaping the flow of media.

C3 connects researchers and thinkers from MIT’s Comparative Media Studies program with companies looking to understand new strategies for doing business in a converging media environment. The consortium provides insights into new ways to relate to consumers, manage brands, and develop engaging experiences, strategies to cut through an increasingly cluttered media environment and benefit from emerging cultural and technological trends. We aim to expand the role of industry leaders by bridging the gap between academic and market research; Partners gain access to both broad-perspective thought leadership and focused analysis on events and campaigns.

Futures of Enterteinment 3 - The Convergence Culture Consortium - 2008 MIT

Futures of Enterteinment 3 - The Convergence Culture Consortium - 2008 MIT | Transmedia Talks | Scoop.it

Convergence culture has moved swiftly from buzzword to industry logic. The creation of transmedia storyworlds, understanding how to appeal to migratory audiences, and the production of digital extensions for traditional materials are becoming the bread and butter of working in the media. Futures of Entertainment 3 once again brings together key industry leaders who are shaping these new directions in our culture and academic scholars immersed in the investigation the social, cultural, political, economic, and technological implications of these changes in our media landscape.

This year's conference will work to bring together the themes from last year - media spreadability, audiences and value, social media, distribution - with the Consortium's new projects as we move towards an increasingly global understanding of media convergence and content flows. Topics for this year's panels include global distribution systems and the challenges of moving content across borders, transmedia, franchising, digital extensions and world building, comics, convergence and commerce, social media and spreadability, as well as renewed discussion about how and why to measure audience value.

Lance Weiler is a storyteller, entrepreneur and thought leader. Recognized as a pioneer because of the way he mixes storytelling and technology – WIRED magazine named him “One of twenty-five people helping to re-invent entertainment and change the face of Hollywood.” He has successfully self-distributed his films The Last Broadcast and Head Trauma to more than 20 countries while grossing over 5 million dollars in the process. The Last Broadcast which he co-wrote and co-directed became the first film to be distributed digitally to theaters in 1998.
