Location-based Games - gaming in physical space: Dissertation on Location-based Games

Dissertation by Stine Ejsing-Duun:

The dissertation contributes to the field of location-based game research by offering an enhanced understanding of location-based games, and location-based game player experiences, as well as providing an expanded vocabulary describing location-based game elements. In addition, the dissertation provides design knowledge concerning creating location-based games that uses certain emergent opportunities when combining location-aware technologies with game mechanics to make use of the six dimensions of location-based games and to involve the player’s body – i.e. make a meaningful meeting possible.

'StoryWorld' was still all about the tech?! Transmedia Storytelling, Should Make Us Cry

'StoryWorld' was still all about the tech?! Transmedia Storytelling, Should Make Us Cry | Transmedia + Storyuniverse | Scoop.it
“Story World was filled with platitudes about the primacy of the story from many speakers, but the overall feel of the crowd was very nerdy and techno-centric, not at like what you get at a film festival or a writer’s conference.”

Apparently, the gap is widening between storytellers and the tech-centric crowd. Though transmedia projects require cross-platform participation from the audience, hopping from medium to medium to engage in the experience design, story is still the central ‘pull’.

Crucial Trends to Keep in Mind « Thoughts on the T

The story is the most important part of your project, whether it’s transmedia or not. ...

You have to know the universe you create (and its characters!) inside out, and have a perfect understanding of the bottom-line, or greater mythology behind it ...

You have to know your target audience inside out. Keep in mind that they may NOT be your peers, or your investors. Get to know the communities your target audience members already inhabit, and use these to leverage your project. ...

What’s more, audiences now expect to participate in their media experiences, both through interactivity and participation. As a result, content creators must develop co-creation models that allow the audience to get involved in different ways. ...

it is important that all departments communicate with each other frequently right from the beginning. Lastly, there is no universal measure of success for transmedia projects. Every creator and producer must assess the desired goals of his/her project on a case to case basis, and then measure the success of the project against that – be it financial return, simple visibility, or moving people into taking certain action.

Spain's Javier Celaya outlines a strategy for publishers and authors to approach the opportunities afforded by the emerging transmedia marketplace.

"Which multimedia languages are the most appropriate in which to tell a story? What role do the various platforms play in creating a story? What is the production process like? What role does a publisher play in the entire process? How is a transmedia story marketed? How can the production costs be made profitable?"

The Arrglington Jump - A year in Showcases (Part 1) | Transmedia + Storyuniverse | Scoop.it

As we wrap up 2011, I've decided to compile a list of great Transmedia projects I have discovered through out the year. Most of these are a work in progress, but all are worth of the support of the Transmedia community. To make the long list a bit more practical to consume, I've decided to divide it up in 3: Projects showcased at Storyworld, Projects showcased at DIY DAYS, and Project showcased through out the year over at Transmedia LA. If you want to mention any other projects worth a look that for some reason have skipped my radar, please do so in the comments section.

JG: “When we have a property that has the kind of richness and following of Halo, we go through everything. We watched all the Red Vs. Blue. Everything. We watch fan films, user-generated content, music videos, commercials that Microsoft did for Halo. When you fall in love, you want to know everything. And that’s what we did.”
