Most fans have no interest in who makes the sausage, they just like the taste. It is through the world that the studio gets to have a relationship with most of its fans, not a forum or a Facebook page or a Twitter account. This is why Nintendo still makes Mario games, Sega still makes Sonic games and Square-Enix still trundles out Final Fantasy games. It’s why Hideo Kojima is stuck making Metal Gear games after all these years, and why the rejuvenation of franchises like Syndicate gains attention. It’s why Blizzard only has four brands which they keep re-releasing, why when Left 4 Dead 3 is announced it will be a big deal and why CCP has returned to its roots with EVE Online.

Director Chris Milk explains: "While the video for “Two Against One” is hand-drawn cell animation, the film would be live action. The music video is essentially the fever dream of the antagonist of the story. It’s mostly his backstory, his life before the tale we see in the movie. If you have a fast computer with Chrome installed you can also see the interactive lucid dream of the protagonist at www.Ro.me. These pieces are sort of narrative breadcrumbs that lead you to the eventual larger story."

If there’s one question about content marketing that gets asked almost as much as “What’s the business case?” it is simply this: “What should we talk about?”

 

Chris Brogan and some others have recently written that the customer is your story, and as much as I love Chris and appreciate his work, I disagree with him here.

 

The customer is not your hero. The customer is the one you want to take on the journey — the one who, at the end, identifies with, is inspired by and/ or is influenced by the hero. Should your audience be placed in the middle of your story? Well that’s for you to decide as the creator of the content marketing effort.

On Monday, a documentary about an American basketball player in Iran ended a 50-day campaign that generated $100,000 in donations at the buzzer on Kickstarter after major media hits with CNN, The Huffington Post and The Wall Street Journal. 

 

Schartoff: What is one of the lessons you can take away having launched a Kickstarter campaign?
Schauder: I’m going to quote one of our backers because I couldn’t say it any better: The power of visual storytelling and the paradigm shift created by both the democratization of distribution and funding (Kickstarter), along with social networking, have created a new set of possibilities for film as a vehicle for social activism AND entertainment.

In other words, as filmmakers, when you’ve got a strong project, you don’t need to be a slave to networks, festivals or other gatekeepers any more
