Modern Mythology: The Story of a Transmedia Revolution (Part 2)

Modern Mythology: The Story of a Transmedia Revolution (Part 2) | Transmedia + Storyuniverse | Scoop.it

The Lost Art of Storytelling

Parents who "tell” stories to their children, usually aren't really “telling” them. They’re reading them word for word from a book; an example of modern mono-active story-watching. Unless the child occasionally takes control of the narrative, thus making it interactive (I.E. "No, Red Riding Hood had a cell phone, and she called the cops on that mean nasty wolf!") the true immersive, and transitive aspects of storytelling are neutered, or even entirely absent in our modern fictions.

Is modern media a "big bad wolf" that
devours creativity and imagination?
Image via Wikipedia

If you put your book down, and “tell” a story to your audience (instead of read it), something about your story will always change, each and every time you tell it. Unless, of course (as you’ll find in live theater), you have your lines memorized.

Selling stories tomorrow

Selling stories tomorrow | Transmedia + Storyuniverse | Scoop.it

Cofounder Mike Monello says that telling a story through interactive media — one that people might want to get involved with for weeks at a time — means supplementing a storyteller’s sense of drama with a puppetmaster’s cunning.

“When you’re thinking about telling a story across multiple channels, you’re thinking a little less like a storyteller and a little more like an architect, in that you’re going to architect an experience using all these tools and it’s not really complete until all these people are in it,” he says.

The future of books, today

The future of books, today | Transmedia + Storyuniverse | Scoop.it

"There is much talk of bright tomorrows for publishing at New York's Digital Book World expo, but how optimistic are readers?"

"When I phoned Neil Gaiman last week to ask him about the stramash over Apple's new iBooks Author app , he said publishing these days was like "the Klondike. Nobody knows what's going on. All they know is that there's gold in them thar hills and they want to try to get hold of it."

Gaiman gives "traditional publishing" five or "maybe 10 years … But that isn't going to mean fewer books. There'll be a lot more books – people will just find them differently.""

Reminds me of the digital concert hall: "Hamlet Live, a new transmedia theatre co-op, is set to burst onto the stage in downtown Toronto in January 2012 -- the play will also be streamed live on the internet, for international viewership...."

But innovation is nothing without a strong commercial capacity. In the new media space, establishing good working relationship with brands and agencies is key. FremantleMedia is one of the leaders in online branded entertainment with projects for brands such as RedBull, Mars, Intel, Tampax, Pampers… Our latest project is in the USA, where we’ve just produced a factual entertainment show for Buick and MSN.
In parallel we continue to bring more interactivity, more dialogue opportunities, to our TV shows, from Twitter and Facebook extensions to social games that let you apply to be on the show.

Social Media has Evolved into the Art of Storytelling, and We Must All Become Masters of it.

Social Media has Evolved into the Art of Storytelling, and We Must All Become Masters of it. | Transmedia + Storyuniverse | Scoop.it

This piece was written by Lauren Fisher for Simply Zesty - Lots of good insights and resources. I'm paraphrasing what caught my attention from the perspective of brand storytelling and how important narrative is in today's marketplace.

Excerpt:

Social media now as an essential form of communication, another side we don't often consider is its role in the evolution of storytelling. Throughout nearly every society and stage in history, storytelling has had a crucial role to play.

How this applies to social media

**we are now all storytellers, telling a story about ourselves through social media that plays a crucial role in the way in which others perceive us, but also, interestingly, how our own lives are preserved.

Here's my takeaway:

**It's important for brands to tell stories that speak to their consumer's needs and core values. Stories that are constantly evolving and living in real time because of digital technology and social networking .

**Stories become conversations that can lead to transactions and brand loyalty

Those brands or individuals that are succeeding the most in social media are those that are able to tell the best stories through digital means, in the most interesting ways.

Some people understand this better than others. Some for example understand the need to constantly create new ‘chapters’ in the story, to use social media constantly to share and create information so that our own personal timelines or stories consistently grow and provide entertainment.

Not only building up a more complete history of ourselves, but a more adept form of entertainment at the time. In just a few years we will have mastered the art of social media and that means we will have become masters of storytelling.

********The consequences of this for society are wide-reaching and most importantly, fundamental for connecting societies and individuals in a completely new way.
