Consumers will only pay attention to you when they’re motivated to do so. Interaction and education along the buyer’s journey is the best way to gain their attention and keep it. Obviously, you need to understand your target consumers before you can offer something valuable or helpful to them, but, once you’ve gained their permission to market to them, you can be strategic about guiding them along the buyer’s journey and positioning offers at just the right moment. 

What is the Buyer’s Journey?

The buyer’s journey includes the steps that consumers take in the buying process. After buyers become aware of their needs and begin researching solutions, they generally proceed to three additional stages: Consideration, Recommendation and Purchase. These buyer journey stages map closely to the Lifecycle Marketing stages within the Sell phase: Educate, Offer and Close....

A recent study at Cornell University found that spending money on experiences is more likely to bring you lasting happiness than spending money on material objects. The reason being that people "adapt" to physical objects - meaning the things you've bought will bring decreasing amounts of happiness as time goes on and you get used to having them around - whereas those one-off experiences will be looked back upon with joy that only increases. Before even catching that first glimpse of the Statue of Liberty or Golden Gate Bridge, foreign tourists increasingly head to shopping malls or iconic stores where luxury brands grace the shelves. They're looking for deals and brands they may not have available back home and they're willing to generously spend to satisfy their wish lists, provided the exchange rate makes that a smart move. Many also want a local shopping experience that reflects the destination they're visiting. Feit, an Australian boutique store with locations in Sydney and New York City, has observed current tourist shopping trends since opening last November and during that time watched the dollar perhaps price some tourists out of otherwise buying their handmade leather footwear and other accessories. The store's products are special in that they're not produced en masse in a factory but rather in small batches and then shipped directly to the store to minimise environmental impact and ensure quality.
