"Purpose-driven" advertising | Tom Fishburne | Transmedia Storytelling meets Tourism | Scoop.it

There has been an explosion in purpose-driven brand communication the last few years.

As Matthew Gardner at Droga5 put it, “Because of the challenge for people’s attention, purpose is the only thing that will get brands to break through. This is not a trend but more of an imperative and should be top of mind for every company.

”When every brand team jumps on the purpose bandwagon, however, the resulting communication can feel pretty shallow. There’s a risk of brands completely overstating why they exist. Particularly when their actual motivation is to capture consumer attention, brand purpose can come across as “ad-deep.” It starts to feel like just one more tick-box on a creative brief....

[Lever] How We Empowered Employees as Brand Storytellers To Diversify Our Team

[Lever] How We Empowered Employees as Brand Storytellers To Diversify Our Team | Transmedia Storytelling meets Tourism | Scoop.it
Founded in 2012, Lever is a fast-growing, venture-backed recruiting
software company based in San Francisco. We formally launched our applicant
tracking system in October 2014, and during our first year on the market,
the number of customers using our core product grew from a handful to 600.

Looking ahead to year two, we needed to quickly double our team to support
ongoing growth but we wanted to do it the Lever way, maintaining our
strong commitment to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. Employees
had founded Lever’s first Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) task-force when we
were only 10 employees, and we had worked hard to achieve balance. By
October 2015, 43 percent of our employees were women and about half were
nonCaucasian. We knew we needed to scale, but were intent on continuing
our D&I progress.

What We Did

In the absence of a newsworthy event (acquisitions tend to work for this,
as do financial raises and, if we’re honest, a good scandal), it’s hard for
a relatively new company to build an employer brand following on social
platforms. We had already begun to experiment with our LinkedIn Company
Page as a hub for Lever news, insights and career updates, but we also
decided to devote more attention to activating our employees to tell their
story. The data supported the need for that focus: back in October 2015 we
already had over 45,000 unique employee 1st degree connections on LinkedIn
despite having under 1,000 company followers, and even as our company
follower base has grown, we still have over 18x the number of unique
employee 1st degree connections today.

Living Stories: What VR Can Learn from Immersive Theater

Living Stories: What VR Can Learn from Immersive Theater | Transmedia Storytelling meets Tourism | Scoop.it
When the recession hit in 2008, book publisher Charlie Melcher looked to reinvent how Melcher Media told stories using the latest smart phone technologies. They developed an iOS app for Al Gore’s Our Choice, and started having a lot of conversations with other media producers from many different disciplines to see how they were using code as a canvas for storytelling. So in 2012, Charlie founded The Future of Storytelling Summit to gather together the most cutting-edge innovators of telling immersive and interactive stories. For the past four years, they’ve been featuring more and more virtual reality technologies at their yearly summit, which is happening again this year on October 5th and 6th. Charlie cites Orality of Literacy by Walter Ong as a book that explores the impact of what was lost from oral traditions within cultures when the printed word started to become the authoritative source rather than from stories that were collaboratively shared. He sees that virtual and augmented reality is bringing us back to a previous time with “Living Stories” that are personalized, responsive, immersive, and multi-sensory. Rather than continuing to produce uni-directional linear media, these new immersive platforms are enabling us to play a more significant role within stories where we can exert our agency, express our creativity, and more fully collaborate in making stories. I had a chance to catch up with Charlie to explore his thoughts on what VR can learn from immersive theater, the transformational potential of becoming a character within a story, the power of living stories, creating more social storytelling experiences, and how immersive technologies may be bringing back some of these pre-literate oral traditions and a greater tolerance for dealing with mystery and enchantment.
