Philip Tan (MIT): “Las peliculas ponen en situacion. Los videojuegos te hacen vivirlo” | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it

Designing for Social Change | Strategies for Community-Based Graphic Design | by Andrew Shea

Designing for Social Change | Strategies for Community-Based Graphic Design | by Andrew Shea | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it

Some call it design for the greater good. Others call it social design. Whatever you call it, it's clear that an altruistic impulse is on the rise in the design community. The latest addition to our Design Briefs series, Designing for Social Change, is a compact, hands-on primer for graphic designers who want to use their unique problem-solving skills to help others. Author Andrew Shea presents ten proven strategies for working effectively with community organizations. These strategies can frame the design challenge and create a checklist to keep a project on track. Twenty case studies illustrate how design professionals and students approach unique challenges when working on a social agenda.

This essential guide provides design educators with a valuable teaching resource and professionals with a set of tools to use in their practice. A chapter on grassroots funding solutions can aid designers as they take on their own projects.

Living on a Stream: The Rise of Real-Time Video

Living on a Stream: The Rise of Real-Time Video | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it
Of course, to some degree, we’ve already become well accustomed to streaming live video. Hundreds of millions of people Skype with each other, sometime for hours. Once a novelty, live-streamed events on the web are now common: Everything from a local government hearing to the Super Bowl can be viewed as it happens. We’ve even approaching the point where people get annoyed if certain things aren’t streamed. But we’re creeping up to a big inflection point.
The next step is for everyone to make use of the tiny, high-quality HD cameras in our phones and our computers to routinely stream live to selected friends or everyone.

The story is key. It’s fairly simple to understand, the strongest narratives for this kind of work have broad story worlds, so not only is there the story you see for 90 minutes onscreen, there is a past, present and future in this world. There is a richness to the narrative that understands that when someone is out of the audience’s field of vision, they have stories of their own. There are a variety of places where these characters have been before a player picks up a controller and guides them through a story.

Why I'm Against Free Labor:

I'm pretty sure I actually could get a lot of talented people on board with Felicity if I tried really hard. I could promise credit, right? Something to boost a portfolio? Something to build out experience? There might even be one or two people out there who would just enjoy the chance to work with me! But just... no. No way. Never going to happen.

The world’s first crowdfunding site for city projects | SmartPlanet

The world’s first crowdfunding site for city projects | SmartPlanet | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it

When I walk around my city I like to imagine how it could improve: “What if we put a bikeshare here. What if we put a trail there?” I think to myself. Now there’s a place for people who like to imagine improvements in their city to put their money where their urban aspirations are, if you live in the United Kingdom.

A new website, Spacehive, claims to be the world’s first online crowdfunding platform for public space projects.

Essentially, people pitch great ideas to improve their community and gather funding for the projects. If a project reaches its funding goal over a certain time frame, just like on Kickstarter, the project gets the pledged money. If not, the project dies.

EdTech Insight: Leveraging the Power of Collective Intelligence in Children

EdTech Insight: Leveraging the Power of Collective Intelligence in Children | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it

Laura Fleming | Transmedia Storytelling and Education.

Just as learning is turning transmedia, it is also becoming dominated by collective intelligence.

The dictionary defines intelligence as:
"the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations"
The connotation of this definition is in relation to self, however a constant flood of new technologies has forced us to consider intelligence in relation to the collective.

The Disruptive Peacock, or Why the 'wrong' Way Might Be the Best Way | The Creativity Post

The Disruptive Peacock, or Why the 'wrong' Way Might Be the Best Way | The Creativity Post | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it

Disruptive Thinking asks you to look at a problem in a new, counter-intuitive way. Disruptive Thinking might just be the most powerful tool in the creative thinking arsenal.

When a peacock opens its tail, the impact is quite astonishing. A very simple creature becomes both beautiful and intimidating, but more importantly it demonstrates to us, metaphorically at least, how easy it is to switch from the linear to a varied, multi-faceted approach of thinking.

The Startup Ethic and the Charitable Impulse | By Alexis Ohanian

The Startup Ethic and the Charitable Impulse | By Alexis Ohanian | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it
These nonprofits work because they make a $25 donation feel like a $25,000 donation. If we can see photos of someone’s stroopwafel as she’s eating it in Amsterdam, we’d better be able to see where our donation’s going and what kind of impact it’s making. Keep this in mind next Christmas when your mailbox is flooded with requests to send checks off to vague charities and foundations.
There’s still a lot of work to be done. But the era of Sally Struthers poverty porn has thankfully ended. The way forward is by making the giving process more transparent and letting the givers take ownership. Bring on the philanthrogeeks.

What’s the greater fear for publishers? Amazon or piracy? | The Shatzkin Files

What’s the greater fear for publishers? Amazon or piracy? | The Shatzkin Files | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it
Pottermore changed the game this morning. Congratulations to Charlie Redmayne, their CEO.

The “aha” moment for me was when somebody on a listserv mentioned they’d bought Kindle editions of the seven Harry Potter books which, it had been announced, were available only from the Pottermore site.

Penny drops. First thought: Hnh? How did that happen?

Then the news came that Amazon was referring people off its site to Pottermore to buy the Kindle editions of Harry Potter ebooks. (It turns out that Barnes & Noble is doing the same.) There they register themselves and then can buy the ebooks.

Is Technology Replacing Parenting?

Is Technology Replacing Parenting? | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it
Parents have a lot of questions about what technology is good for their kids, and what they should avoid. Recently a parent was asking my opinion on the “My Baby Can Read” videos and whether she should use those with her child. Debbie has blogged about these DVDs before, but if you aren’t familiar, they are similar to the “Baby Einstein” videos in that you place your young child in front of the television to absorb information, which is far from the most effective way to help your child develop early language and literacy skills. Giving your child the latest in computer based storybooks, which allow a parent to press a button and let the computer do the reading, instead of sitting down and sharing the experience with their child, is no better.

Toolkit Case Study | The Transmedia Conspiracy of Vladan Nikolic's "Zenith" | Transmedia Spain | Scoop.it

Vladan Nikolic is not the only filmmaker to explore the prospects of transmedia. In the New Frontiers section at Sundance last year, "Head Trauma" director Lance Weiler unveiled "Pandemic 1.0," a detailed transmedia project revolving around the story of a massive disease sweeping the United States. (Incidentally, Nikolic and Weiler met in the late 1990's, when both were early adapters of digital video.)
