September was a busy month for professional development in New Zealand with events on interactive storytelling, finding 'voice' in film & television, and transmedia ...Fiona Milburn reports back from this year's DOC Edge Lab, The Big Screen Symposium and NZGDC's Hollywood & Interactive IP event.
Stephen Graves: "Niantic Labs founder John Hanke has been helping people find their way in the world for years, from the computer globe that he pioneered at Keyhole – later to become Google Earth – to his time as head of Product Management for Google's Geo division."
Eric Alt: '“Media Genres: Media Marvels” will allow Blumberg--a pop culture historian and comic industry veteran--to dig into how Marvel created a cultural landscape where millions of non-geeks pay to watch a talking raccoon fight a Kree zealot on the Nova Corps home world.'
Randy Astle: "Access is always an issue with documentary, creating unique challenges in war zones or similar areas where filmmakers would be in physical danger or simply cannot go. The documentary Last Hijack, produced by Submarine Channel and directed by Femke Wolting and Tommy Pallotta, doesn’t just deal with these issues but makes them one of the film’s greatest strengths."
Stuart Dredge: "Lots of developers and publishers are exploring the potential of interactive picture book-apps for children, but can they ever hope to deliver a reading experience comparable to books?"
T.L. Stanley: "Since the mid-2000s, Doritos has been making a high-profile event out of doing just that during the biggest football game of the year, but industry veterans say the business of fan-generated marketing is thriving even in the off season."

Nataly Goico: "Measuring engagement means placing audience size into a broader context of how the transmedia production is actually performing. Stakeholders in the production get to see where, how and when fan engage so that refinements can be made."
