WTF is Transmedia? (2013)

WTF is Transmedia? (2013) | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it

Andrea Phillips:  "It's become fashionable to hate the word 'transmedia' in some circles. The T-word has been very good to me. It's netted me any number of speaking engagements and website hits and sold me a book, among other things, so I feel a certain loyalty to it. I don't think I'd be enjoying the same degree of professional success if I hadn't very consciously embraced That Word back in 2010 or so."

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Here's the second of today's posts looking at the difficulties associated with the "T-word".  The first post is by Simon Staffans and can be found here.

Andrea Phillips: The Terribleminds [Transmedia] Interview | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it

Chuck Wendig: "I met Andrea Phillips one night at one of our local “Cult of Transmedia” meetings, which takes place across a blog, a smartphone, a movie screen, a walking tour of NYC, and a Denny’s diner menu downloaded into the brain of Abraham Lincoln. She is, quite plainly, a transmedia proselyte and guru all at the same time, and you must heed her words as a storyteller unless I break all the bones in your feet."

5 Lessons For Storytellers From The Transmedia World

5 Lessons For Storytellers From The Transmedia World | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it

Andrea Phillips: "Transmedia storytelling is the art of breaking up one story or experience over multiple media, so that each medium is making a special and unique contribution to the whole. But the lessons I’ve learned over the past decade of creating and participating in transmedia projects are surprisingly applicable to anyone who has an audience — and on the web, that means everyone."

Savvy Crowdfunding or Annoying Spammer? | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it

Andrea Phillips:  "There's been a bit of a backlash recently against Kickstarter, and indeed, against crowdfunding as a whole. That's because there are an increasing number of hapless crowdfunders who aren't clear on the difference between enthusiastically promoting their work and spamming the internets with their demands for money."

DRC:  If you've been following this series of articles on Henry Jenkins' blog, then you might also want to read Andrea Phillips' thoughts on the subject over at Deus Ex Machinatio.

Andrea Phillips: "I've been mulling over Geoffrey Long's series about transmedia criticism, How to Ride a Lion. I feel like it deserves some thoughtful response, but it's been hard for me to formulate anything that isn't self-aggrandizing (Geoffrey is very flattering toward me indeed) or a sort of nodding-my-head-along that is so empty of content I might as well not say anything at all."
