Transmedia Literacy: Expanding the Media Literacy Frontier

Transmedia Literacy: Expanding the Media Literacy Frontier | Transmedia Storytelling for Business | Scoop.it
Critical thinking across multiple modalities

Via Dr. Pamela Rutledge
Debbie Elicksen 's insight:

"Mass media producers are scrambling because they can no longer take viewers’ attention for granted.  Audiences have choice and are psychologically and technologically empowered to seek content worth their most valuable asset—attention."

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, December 13, 2014 5:13 PM

Transmedia literacy implies engaging critically in nonlinear narratives of all kinds, from entertainment and branding to journalism.  We build mental models unconsciously, to create a holistic understanding.  In entertainment, we revel in narratives of choice--we can actively pursue and evaluate content based on enjoyment, relevance, and identity.  Many other narratives are more subtle, news, commercial and social stories can be equally immersive and persuasive without our awareness.  Transmedia literacy emphasizes the need for mindful attention to the narrative construction that create larger ideaworlds in our off and online environments.

The Digital Rocking Chair's curator insight, December 14, 2014 4:17 PM

Dr. Pamela Rutledge:  "Transmedia storytelling goes beyond the need to segment such skills as search and collaboration.  It demands the ability to recognize, understand, and interact with narrative threads across multiple modalities, not just within them."

Agree. Anyone who participates in viewing these photos are advocating the act of cyberbullying in for form of a cyber hack. Shame on you.

Transmedia Storytelling & The Rise of The Alternate Reality Game (ARG)

Transmedia Storytelling & The Rise of The Alternate Reality Game (ARG) | Transmedia Storytelling for Business | Scoop.it
Once Upon A Time...I dare any thirty-something to deny at some point in their childhood they didn’t want to be a superhero. Not surprising then that so many people became so enthralled back in 2008
Debbie Elicksen 's insight:

To heck with the 30-something -- those of us who saw the Batman TV series also wanted to be Batman -- or in my case -- Catwoman. :)

The Dark Knight is a series we can't get enough of. Sure, the transmedia promotion leading up to it was like an out-of-body experience, but the shows themselves held up their end of the bargain. Especially with Christian Bale's portrayal of Batman, and Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker was a role that transcended all roles. If anyone hasn't seen his performance, even if you don't like these types of film, it's one of those can't miss moments.

The Dark Knight promotion is the mother of all. It's the candle we all strive to light in our own campaigns.

Fascinating new ways to present narratives... "letting us experience stories in a visceral, multi-sensual, personal and participatory way."  "Clouds over Sidra" is one of the projects featured in the exhibit created by vrse tools.  This virtual reality project immerses the viewer into a Syrian refugee camp through the eyes of a 12 year old girl.  Although vrse tools are out of my capacity to navigate, I can only imagine how cool it would be to recreate historical events in a virtual reality to allow students to explore the past in such an intimate way.

What Not To Do In Public Relations

What Not To Do In Public Relations | Transmedia Storytelling for Business | Scoop.it
There are plenty of examples abound on what not to do in public relations. The speed of the Internet can viral an errant post faster than you can delete it.
Debbie Elicksen 's insight:

Most of us are human and we will make a mistake. There are examples of some who publicly published a comment and once it was pushed live, immediately rethought it and deleted it. I know I’ve done it. Depending on how high profile you are, that post could still go viral, but if it was deleted within five minutes or as soon as you could log back in, that shows the insult was not intentional, just a lapse in judgment.
