Digital Literacy Does Not Mean Critical Thinking

Digital Literacy Does Not Mean Critical Thinking | Transmedia Storytelling & Education | Scoop.it
Nik Peachey, for example, in his recent book, Thinking Critically Through Digital Media (2016), talks about how students are generally taught how to work with information through passive engagement. He suggests developing digital literacies, including understanding and analyzing what they are seeing. They need to “assess the validity, credibility and underlying bias of the information they study” and be “given a range of research tools and techniques for reassessing the information and evaluating how it fits within their personal framework of belief systems and values.”

Making sense of open educational resources - Tony Bates

Making sense of open educational resources - Tony Bates | Transmedia Storytelling & Education | Scoop.it
"Open educational resources are somewhat different from open learning, in that they are primarily content, while open learning includes both content and educational services, such as specially designed online materials, in-built learner support and assessment. Open educational resources cover a wide range of formats, including open textbooks, video recorded lectures, YouTube clips, web-based textual materials designed for independent study, animations and simulations, diagrams and graphics, some MOOCs, or even assessment materials such as tests with automated answers. OER can also include Powerpoint slides or lecture notes. In order to be open educational resources, though, they must be freely available for at least educational use."

[PDF] Preparing Teachers for a Project-Based World

[PDF] Preparing Teachers for a Project-Based World | Transmedia Storytelling & Education | Scoop.it

In the paper, Preparing Teachers for a Project-Based World, we explore how teacher preparation and professional learning can be aligned to–and modeled after–the types of deeper learning environments we also seek to create for students.

We share a vision for preparation and beginning teacher professional development–a vision that embraces the opportunity of personalized project-based learning (PBL) for all students. In the paper, we also focus on what a well-prepared PBL teacher should know and be able to do.

Drawing upon the expertise and leadership of PBL educators across the country, we share what an ideal preparation program and early career professional learning for teachers ought to look like if we want to develop high-quality PBL teachers.

[Infographic] The Periodic Table of Instructional Design

[Infographic] The Periodic Table of Instructional Design | Transmedia Storytelling & Education | Scoop.it
Students and scholars of chemistry make frequent use of the periodic table of the elements in order to contextualize and organize their understanding of the many substances they work with, as well as help to memorize each of their different properties.

Seeing the tremendous boon that the periodic table is to the field of chemistry and science as a whole, we thought that instructional design could use a quick reference of its own. To that end, we’ve compiled a table of elements specifically for the instructional designers.

Each “element” is organized into one of five different groups according to its properties and where it falls in the instructional design process.

"Presentation at the Media Education Summit 16 - Rome.

By tapping into the design, and application of a transmedia language learning storyworld, part of an ongoing research project, this presentation explores a set of pedagogical frameworks that take into account the interconnected media context of students and presents considerations regarding the development of a design methodology targeted to enhance learning opportunities within an immersive storyworld. The presentation concludes with a brief discussion of the challenges emerging from the implementation process of a prototype version of the storyworld in a formal learning environment and points to future research."
