Two Different Types of Storytelling: Vine vs. Instagram | Transmedia, Singularity and much more "weird" stuff I love | Scoop.it

Brian Honigman:  "Instagram Video launched on June 20th and since then there’s been a constant debate as to whether Facebook’s Instagram or Twitter’s Vine is doing better and which will come out on top as the “go-to” social video app."

Metallica will perform during Comic-Con San Diego to help promote a new 3D movie the iconic metal band wrote and stars in, Picturehouse announced on Monday.

The film, “Metallica Through the Never,” splices footage of a Metallica concert in Canada with a fictional narrative about a roadie (played by Dane DeHaan).

Picturehouse is distributing the movie - its first project since the company relaunched with Bob Berney and his wife Jeanne in charge....'

On the exponential curve: inside Singularity University

On the exponential curve: inside Singularity University | Transmedia, Singularity and much more "weird" stuff I love | Scoop.it

It's not an accredited university, and it doesn't actually teach the singuarity, the supposed superintelligence that will result when man merges with machine, due (according to prolific inventor and author Ray Kurzweil) sometime around 2045. Still, the official welcome at Singularity University's (SU) opening executive-programme class this fresh December afternoon in Nasa's Ames research campus, at Moffett Federal Airfield, California, is delivered -- appropriately -- by a 60cm-tall NAO humanoid robot. "I am so excited to see you all here," the robot beams to about 80 investors, inventors, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and otherwise future-curious students who have committed up to $12,000 (£7,650) each to spend seven days here exploring advances in biotech, nanotech, AI, robotics, neuroscience, energy systems and other accelerating technologies. The week's takeaways, declares SU's CEO Rob Nail, will be the opportunities offered by abundance, disruptive convergence, "109 thinking", problem-solving and "exponential technological challenges". "It gets really interesting," Nail says, "at the borders of, say, robotics and medicine, or nanotech and neuroscience." Even the course Wi-Fi password is "12481632" -- chosen because "it's exponential".

"transmedia storytelling is irrelevant to the audience as long we do it well" article @pamelarutledge | Transmedia, Singularity and much more "weird" stuff I love | Scoop.it
Transmedia storytelling is a hotly debated term du jour that, on the one hand, is so broad that it’s nearly meaningless, while, on the other, seems to be incredibly difficult to replace with something better.

Gary Hayes's curator insight, July 11, 2013 8:48 PM

Quote "From a psychological perspective, everything is “transmedia,” but now we’ve figured out that we can move intentionally within that realm.  It isn’t just about entertainment franchises.  The human brain makes sense out of the entire world in exactly that way that beautifully orchestrated transmedia projects deliver StoryWorlds—through different sensory input received at different times through purposeful interaction and attention that create a layered meaning. Everything we learn and know comes at us bit by bit and much of it we gather ourselves on purpose.  Our brain accommodates this flea market of inputs by filtering and organizing it into a narrative that makes sense.  The more personal and provocative the inputs, the more attention we devote, the more meaning we create and the more enjoyment we experience.  The caveat: this is true only as long as the information flow is relevant to us AND makes sense within a somewhat fungible range of expectations so we can stick it on the narrative in some way.  If new information doesn’t fit in our cognitive framework, we reject it and move on with the emotional residue somewhere between lack of interest and dislike. Exploring Curation as a core competency in digital and media literacy education

Paul Mihailidis, James N Cohen:

"In today’s hypermedia landscape, youth and young adults are increasingly using social media platforms, online aggregators and mobile applications for daily information use. Communication educators, armed with a host of free, easy-to-use online tools, have the ability to create dynamic approaches to teaching and learning about information and communication flow online. In this paper we explore the concept of curation as a student- and creation-driven pedagogical tool to enhance digital and media literacy education. We present a theoretical justification for curation and present six key ways that curation can be used to teach about critical thinking, analysis and expression online. We utilize a case study of the digital curation platform Storify to explore how curation works in the classroom, and present a framework that integrates curation pedagogy into core media literacy education learning outcomes.!

curation as a core competency today

Elizabeth Sky-McIlvain's curator insight, July 10, 2013 6:07 PM

For upper HS teachers.  I have been grappling with the value of "curation" for a while now.  Basically, curation without commentary is, I think, like collecting recipes one will never cook.  This article presents a way to use the online tool Storify (http://storify.com/) to make the curation of content meaningful (both to the collector and to an audience).  I'm still not sure I buy it - but the author is correct that this an educational trend that should be embraced and encouraged, not ignored.

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's comment, July 4, 2013 8:13 PM
Transmedia depends on engaging very primal psychologies--empathy, curiosity, the need for certainty and self-relevance--to get audience participation. The power is, as always, in the story. But the beauty of a transmedia strategy--compared to crossmedia--is that you don't have to tell the whole story at one time or in one medium, thus heightening the psychological response and increasing the motivation to explore and contribute. I love the Toshiba/Intel piece.
