The 7 Literacies of Transmedia Storytelling

The 7 Literacies of Transmedia Storytelling | Transmedia Seattle | Scoop.it

"Henry Jenkins defines transmedia storytelling as "a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery  channels for the purpose of creating a unified

and coordinated entertainment experience. Ideally, each medium makes it own unique contribution to the unfolding of the story.

In transmedia storytelling, narrative is central to the story, which is told across multiple platforms, and may include sound, images, text, movie and gaming elements. The best part about it is that each of those elements plays an integral part of the narrative. And without experiencing all of those elements, you miss the full story. That’s what makes transmedia storytelling a powerful tool for 21st century literacy and learning..."

The New Frontier Convergence Experiment Works | Sundance Institute | Transmedia Seattle | Scoop.it

Over the past eight years, Sundance Institute’s New Frontier program has been building a community of brilliant creative minds from a broad range of artistic, scientific, and technology backgrounds, who are “geeked” about playing together in the story innovation sandbox.

Last month, the New Frontier Story Lab brought a fraction of that community to the ancient mountains of Utah to share what they’ve learned from their experiments and to help develop the visionary projects of our 2013 Fellows.

“What if the Academy Award-nominated writer who conceived the ingenious twist to Cape Fear that iconic talents Scorsese, Nolte and DeNiro used to rivet audiences; was in the room with a former Disney Imagineer, whose transmedia campaigns brought millions of fanboy/fangirl fantasies to life? And, we added the digital artist who (from a lighthouse in Iceland) studied the inner workings of Bjork’s mind to created fluid iPad interfaces that allowed millions of her adherents to explore and interact with her imagination?”

What would happen?...

The future of storytelling is not only cross-platform (transmedia), it is also cross-industry (and exciting!). Collaboration is key, between creative, science and technology innovators.  And there is definitely room for input from Media Psychologists!  #storytelling #mediapsych

Simon Staffans: What can TV learn from online producers? Feature interview w Carrie Cutforth-Young - MIPBlog | Transmedia Seattle | Scoop.it

Simon Staffans: So, what’s the deal with web series? What makes them so good?

Carrie Cuthforth-Young (photo): They’veenabled content creators to tell the stories they want to tell on the platforms they want them delivered on, directly to audiences. This is ideal for groups that have been marginalised – women, people of colour, LGBT and so on. TV is moving into web now, as business models are beginning to emerge and the audiences are increasingly attracted to web content, the millenials in particular.

The challenge for a lot of content creators now is to try to become their own hybrid distribution system, beyond leaning only on YouTube. And to map out how will they get that direct contact with the audience. If you only have an audience on a platform such as YouTube (outside of subscribers), but you don’t have their contacts, you don’t have their e-mail addresses, you don’t have them as an audience – you have their views from last week or a year ago. And what good does that do you now?...

Dorristheloris:  "People have been telling stories since they learned to communicate with each other. They’ve been recording stories since the first primitive figure was painted on a cave wall. There’s something instinctive and primal about the need to pass on your experiences, whether they be realistic or fantastical, to another or many other human beings."

[Infographic] Transmedia storytelling in 5 steps

[Infographic] Transmedia storytelling in 5 steps | Transmedia Seattle | Scoop.it
by Craig Wilson"Its not easy being a brand storyteller in a transmedia world. Between constantly changing technology, tight budgets, and interaction from consumers in new and unprecedented ways; brand storytellers are being forced to create new transmedia experiences by integrating dynamic content, often co-created through audience participation."According to Getty Image’s latest infographic, effective transmedia storytelling offers consumers: more new experiences; longer extendable campaign lives; stronger emotional connections to brands; and, the ability for businesses to engage with new or jaded audiences to send brand loyalty soaring via this new media experience. For this reason, becoming effective storytellers in the transmedia marketplace is something that should be top of mind for marketers, advertisers and business decision makers."The good news is you don’t need to analyse the science behind effective brand storytelling as this new transmedia storytelling infographic has done it for you in five easy steps."

How Do You End A Transmedia Project? | Tribeca Film Institute | Transmedia Seattle | Scoop.it
"So you've done it. After year's of developing your transmedia project it's finally up and running. But is the end ever in sight? In most avenues of the arts there is an end game. Whether it be a self-imposed deadline or (more likely) one given to you, at some point someone wants to see the finished product. However, the thing about transmedia (at least on the web side of it) is it can go on, and on, and on."
