Romance Writers – January 2014 : ARE YOU READY to GET ON the TRANSMEDIA BANDWAGON?

ARE YOU READY to GET ON the TRANSMEDIA BANDWAGON?

Brad Tollefson's insight:

What’s next in the world of transmedia?

Snyder said, “People are being trained to stream their entertainment via Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. Within two years, I believe there’ll be a slew of not only transmedia stories, but also transmedia story streaming. I’m talking about a 15-minute read one day, a 45-second audio clip the next, a 4-minute video the next, a live conference line event the next day, and a Facebook posting the next. The same story, told in short bits, that can be broadcast daily via e-mail, text, social media, or a blog, with all parts of a certain segment coming together into an interactive book or other offering after the course of three months.” While there will be media “purists” who only consume one type of media for extended lengths of time, she said the trend for shorter, but constant, media engagement is on the horizon.

Phillips added, “We’ve seen big, splashy entertainment brands doing transmedia. I think we’re starting to see the rise of the artisanal transmedia project as well, with projects executed by small teams or even individuals where making thousands of dollars is a success (whereas in Hollywood, making thousands is an abject failure).”

I"m really interested in the  author's own project he describes here:

'Earlier this year, working with the artists collective Circumstance, I made These Pages Fall Like Ash, and it’s difficult for me to talk about S without harking back to ideas around structural interdependency that we explored in that piece.

These Pages came as a hand-crafted wooden book that readers used to immerse themselves in a story of two cities, each overlapping the other, exploring a serial fiction by accessing content (transmitted from wireless hard drives) on their mobiles as they moved through the streets of ‘their’ city. We were keen to see how closely we could make two platforms work together, to have the contextual content (in the physical books) feed into and complement (actually, more than complement – it was a necessarily connected process) the digital serial fiction. We did this by making two books within the wooden case – one describes the ‘other’ city; it’s a gazetteer, a guidebook. The other described your city, and was largely made up of suggestions and prompts to write things yourself, to take notes and observe, flaneur-like, the story being played out over the run of the serial...'

Why You Should Read More Novels

Why You Should Read More Novels | Transmedia Seattle | Scoop.it
Neuroscientsts find that reading stories can lead to biological changes in the brain.
Brad Tollefson's insight:

Like muscle memory, the brain displayed "shadow activity" sparked by reading long after the book had been set down. Though the sample was fairly small--only 21 students, without an independent control group--changes in brain connectivity persisted for hours after the participants finished their reading assignments, and were still salient during fMRI scanning five days after they finished the novel.

So go grab a book. It may boost your brainpower. And if it doesn't, well, at worst, you've finished Harry Potter for the 27th time...

Brad Tollefson's insight:

"More arousing content should be more likely to spread quickly on the Internet and should be more likely to capture public attention," he concluded in Psychological Science.

Knowing that emotional arousal contributes to digital contagion should help designers and other creative types craft catchier content (if that's their goal)...

Sherlock: We’ve plotted out the whole of series 4 and 5 reveals Steven Moffat | Transmedia Seattle | Scoop.it

“The ideas are the best we’ve ever had,” says the Sherlock writer...

...here’s some good news: Sherlock co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have already plotted out two more series of the detective drama – and Moffat reckons it’s their best stuff yet.

“Rather excitingly, Mark and I, for no particular reason, we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the [Sherlock] production bus… and we just started plotting out what we could do in the future,” Moffat told the audience at tonight's Bafta screening of the season three finale His Last Vow.

“And we plotted out the whole of series four and five.”...'
