Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, March 29, 8:40 PM

Interestingly, not every young person lives the way the author's friend's daughter suggested. And not every old person needs a word to describe this practice.

Sadim MR's curator insight, March 31, 12:22 AM

"My friend’s daughter explained that young people don’t need a word to describe transmedia because this is how they live every day. The narrative of their own lives unfolds across different social media platforms and they consciously create identities for themselves depending on where, what, how and with whom they share information."

Justin Nalepa's curator insight, March 31, 8:01 AM

Love the comment posted below the article: "The word represents an attack on the institutional tendency to retain control and ownership of cultural vitality... I think your friend's daughter is absolutely right and only slightly wrong because transmedia is another word for power, and sharing control of culture is not the primary objective of the folks who are presently in control of the definition of transmedia."

Frank Rose:  "When JWT Intelligence announced its "10 Trends for 2014 and Beyond" recently, trend #1 was "immersive experiences." Certainly you can feel this in New York: From Punchdrunk's Sleep No More (now running for nearly three years) to MoMA's Rain Room to Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room, people are willing to pay top dollar or line up for hours to experience something all-encompassing and beyond the ordinary. But why?"

cyneth's curator insight, December 18, 2013 2:14 PM

In my view, the term "experience economy" is morphing into the "immersive"  economy - and you will see the rise of more "immersive technology" to facilitate.  Emergence has become Immersive.

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's comment, July 8, 2013 11:13 AM
Nice post, Siobhan! Interesting reframe (as we psychologists like to say to try to sound erudite). Is this a chicken and egg thing? Storytelling starts with the audience because all connection starts with a psychological need. Success fulfillment of the need (excitement, emotion, transportation, curiosity, engagement) means you have to know what need your are filling and not just how and where but what story to tell to reach them. The genius, then, is two-fold, the humanity to see the need and the skill to crafting the story to match the need. Love the example.
siobhan-o-flynn's comment, July 8, 2013 2:39 PM
I like the way you frame this Pamela! It is indeed a two-fold process & understanding the audience, especially for interactive and/or multi-platform is HUGE! At least two more examples to follow!

a great strategic move: 2nd tier heroes who won't make it to big screen deployed for TV shows. Spinning an old asset is always one of the best marketing decisions you can make.

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, November 9, 2013 2:36 PM

Disney/Marvel has inked a rather epic deal with Netflix: four series with 13 episodes each, all leading up to a final team-up miniseries. The subjects of those series: Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. And if that wasn’t a sweet enough deal for fans, the deal is also part of a broader arrangement between the two that grants Netflix exclusive, first-run subscription rights to Disney and Marvel films - See more at: http://www.thenerdmachine.com/marvel-at-netflix-intersecting-comics-and-transmedia/#sthash.VrVc0Tpb.dpuf

LucaVanin - It can have the same connotation of untruth in the west; just depends on context (and who's paying!) In Entertainment, of course, no one worries about superficial truth. Even (especially?) in Reality TV. What matters is the universal truth that stories can deliver. That is the real litmus test of truth.
