New Community Curation Platform For Quality Minds To Share Quality Content: Newsana

New Community Curation Platform For Quality Minds To Share Quality Content: Newsana | Transmedia Production (by Uzzi) | Scoop.it

A Toronto-based media website Newsana is opening public beta testing today; it is a social platform for news junkies that curates the highest quality content possible, as voted on by its users.

From "FAQ" page:

"Newsana is an community of passionate people who are dedicated to finding and discussing quality news and ideas from around the world. Our members share and vote on their favourite stories which determines the Top 5 Essential Stories of the day from a variety of topics.

It’s not new to have a community based on finding and sharing news, but only Newsana creates a community for quality minds to share quality content.

This is done by:

- Filtering out the noise. We provide members with an easy guide to the Top 5 Essential Stories per topic, not a shotgun blast of information that’s impossible to keep up with.

- Elevating the conversation.

- Higher standards. We don’t have an open door policy; our members must apply and show they are passionate about making the Internet a better place.

By focusing our activity on finding Top 5 Essential Stories in any given topic, we’re bringing much-needed context, and smart conversation, to the often chaotic online news landscape.

In order to maintain that quality and make sure our community standards are upheld, we require that everyone who pitches a story is a Newsana member..."

Robin Good's curator insight, August 27, 7:03 AM

MonitorBook is a new free web app which allows you to track changes to any piece of content on any web page available online.

MonitorBook is very easy to use. You just install the bookmarklet available in the Instruction section of the site and then as soon as you are on a page where you want to track changes to something, you click the bookmarklet and then select the piece of content on the page that you want to track. That's it.

If you go back to your web account on MonitorBook you will find inside the section called Trackings the page element you have selected to track and any possible changes that have happened to it.

I look forward to see RSS output and more advanced options to decide every how long to check and what to report.

Handy for anyone needing to keep a page under tabs though without an alerting system the key benefit may be lost.

Free to use.

Pro version available.

Disney and Lucasfilm are working to create a new Star Wars trilogy, a few stand-alone films, a new animated television series following the origins of the Rebellion, plus books, games and even theme park attractions. And from what we’ve heard, the plan is for all of them to interconnect and cross over among one another in ways we’ve never seen in the history of storytelling.

Vyer Films is a unique online film subscription service which scouts, curates and streams unique, rare author films, impossible to get to outside of international film festivals.

Vyer unique talent is in creating context around each new feature film it decides to showcase by providing interviews, collateral material and other stuff that can help the viewer get a deeper and broader understanding of what the film and its authors are about.

Josh Johnson, a filmmaker, head of acquisitions at Vyer, doesn't go to festivals but leverages the immense quantity of information already available online to find new interesting films to feature.

For just $20 per month, you gain access to Vyer Films' entire catalogue, along with each new release, and every feature. Should you choose to unsubscribe, you will still be able to watch any film released over the course of your subscription.

A great, time-saving quality resource for non-commercial film lovers looking not to waste their time browsing a huge catalogue of titles but to find someone who can help them discover and appreciate new film gems.

The biggest game companies are thinking bigger when it comes to transmedia entertainment.

...In the span of a couple of weeks, I heard a couple of very interesting talks on transmedia, or entertainment properties that span multiple media like games, movies, and comic books. One talk took place at the Casual Connect conference in San Francisco, where game developer Nick Fortugno observed that the creation of a new entertainment property is best pursued in the development of a mobile game. That’s because mobile games can be made inexpensively and quickly, compared to movies or console games. You can test out new ideas more easily, with less risk. If you take a risk with a movie, you’ll go broke....'

Cheryl Frose's curator insight, June 12, 6:03 PM

Transmedia, a broad descriptive word that literally translated means “across media” and encompasses many strategies that transverse industries, is generally regarded as the use of multiple media platforms to tell a story or story experience. Though the word “transmedia” is thought to have entertainment franchise origins, its adaptation for education purposes is both valuable and becoming more and more common. While teachers like Sansing are using coding and programming in their language arts instruction, others are taking advantage of increasingly sophisticated apps and interactive media for classroom use.

David Collet's curator insight, June 12, 9:28 PM

I guess this another favorite topic for me. Imagine using transmedia to teach maths and include cross over language components. After all maths has a language of its own.

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, June 18, 12:15 PM

Transmedia approaches encourage (or even force) people to actively acknowledge and design for a fluid and multi-dimensional, rather than linear, media environment.  For the human brain, stories are not constrained by what's on the page. Transmedia begins to replicate how we think and encourages producers to innovate in each platform to create multiple touchpoints that facilitate our natural ability to imagine, project, expand and experience.
