By focusing our activity on finding Top 5 Essential Stories in any given topic, we’re bringing much-needed context, and smart conversation, to the often chaotic online news landscape. One thing that many successful people have in common is a mastery of human communication. What’s interesting, though, is how little we seem to value it as a society.

Peter Gutierrez: "As a reference work on media/transmedia, both aesthetically and historically, as a how-to for student media-makers, or simply on the professional development shelf, so that teachers and librarians can mine it for ideas, [Tyler Weaver’s book is] a text that can fill many needs at once. I was delighted, then, when the author agreed to talk to me about this fascinating topic" …

With the number of video formats and video-enabled devices growing, content providers are stuck with the extra cost and effort. Is being on every platform worth it? The good news: As 2012 progresses, streaming media continues to reach more viewers worldwide than ever before. It appears that this growth will continue as increasingly more people watch content on web- and mobile-connected devices. The bad news: The variety of web-connected tablets and smartphones continues to grow, as well as the range of mutually incompatible standards available for viewing streaming media. For content providers, this means that they have to serve more platforms than ever before, at their own expense. The combination of these two factors poses major challenges for streaming media content producers and distributors. To get a handle on the issue, we’ve asked numerous industry experts to delve into the questions and answers linked to “getting your content on all devices”—including whether the effort is worth the expense.

Ariston Anderson: "As a filmmaker, Loach has adopted a working style not unlike that of the characters seen in his films. Unlike the traditional Hollywood model, he’s not driven by his own race to the top, but rather by a collective spirit, a desire to create harmony on the set and to appreciate his crew for a job well done."

Robin Good: Pivotshare is a web platform which allows you to create a branded web site where you can curate, promote and sell your best digital media video and audio files. The service accepts .mp4, .mov, swf, .flv, .avi and .mp3 files for upload and it lets you set the price and the business model (subscription or pay-per-view or a combination of both) that you want to use. On Pivotshare you can brand your channel with your logo and customize its look and feel, and you can also "bookmark" specific "spots" inside your audio and video content.
Content on Pivotshare is accessible by both desktop computers as well by smartphone and tablet devices and it has the ability to memorize, for the user, where a sesson is left, so that it can be picked up next time he logs in. You can set up some of your content to be free and some of it to be accessible only by paying for it. Each channel can be fueled by more than a contributor and you are free to decide who will team up with you. There are two delivery formats available to curate and organize your key assets: a) the Showcase (ideal for ten items or less) and b) the Library (for collections of 50 or more items). Revenue-wise Pivotshare takes 30% from a Channel’s revenue, and passes the rest to the Editor and Contributors of that Channel. To use the service there is no upfront cost. Jesse Shapins: "[...] documentary is a relatively fluid genre that operates in so many different contexts at such varied lengths (broadcast news magazines, long-form series, live performance, "listening rooms," etc.), the people engaged in it are more open to redefining and experimenting with its boundaries than those who are entrenched in more established modes of documentary (e.g., classic voiceover-driven video docs)."
