How to Help Your Brand Find Its Most Compelling Story | Business 2 Community | transmedia marketing: storytelling for business, art and education | Scoop.it
You may be either working for a company that you did not start or as a consultant tasked with telling a story that you have not lived or do not know intimately. It’s a daunting task. The story has been in the making for years, with many characters (some living, some dead) and many plot twists. There may be many interpretations and points of view; how can you possibly tell it better than the owner?

(Tina) - this post goes on to give some very good advice on where to find your company's story.  Well worth reading!

Facebook Just Launched A Brand New Site That Lets You Share Stuff With More Than Just Your Friends

Facebook Just Launched A Brand New Site That Lets You Share Stuff With More Than Just Your Friends | transmedia marketing: storytelling for business, art and education | Scoop.it
Facebook introduced a new product called Facebook Stories today. Stories is a new site that allows Facebook to share the stories of individuals using Facebook in extraordinary ways.

Stories is a separate site from the Facebook you're used to. To use stories head to FacebookStories.com and take a look at some of the events already there. To submit your own story, you must enable a Facebook App through your current account.

Each month Stories will introduce a new theme and tell different tales of how the social network has touched individual's lives.

(Tina)  It TOTALLY makes sense that Facebook would use the power of story to promote its product!  Well done!

America Is Falling In Love With The Chubby Kid In This New Nike Ad | transmedia marketing: storytelling for business, art and education | Scoop.it
Nike is not an Olympic sponsor this year but that hasn't stopped it from borrowing interest in what it takes to compete in the games. The result—this thoughtful, unexpectedly moving video of an overweight pre-teenager, Nathan, forcing himself to run down a lonely road in London, Ohio—is fantastic. Note that it's filmed in a single, unedited take.

Transmedia Heaven: Beginnings

Transmedia Heaven: Beginnings | transmedia marketing: storytelling for business, art and education | Scoop.it

"Ladies and gentlemen we have ventured into transmedia! And we're going to keep you updated on our experiences throughout the process, the things we learn, the things that don't work so well, and everything in between.

For those of you who don't know, transmedia is the technique of delivering a story or creative idea across multiple digital platforms and formats. The idea is to create content that permeates the audience's daily lives so they can engage with it on varying levels and using different platforms, and in this way be a part of the action, and in many cases even control the flow of the action.

We thought long and hard and came to the conclusion that this transmedia world is so new that if you have imagination, and determination, you can make an impact. We have listened to and read so many opinions on this topic and the average attitude is that the whole idea is so new that lots of things are still untried. But that’s good enough for us, we have lots of ideas that we want to build on and share. This will enable us to start to learn and perhaps share the process and results with our clients in the future."

(Tina) this should be fun to follow!

Most amateurs and citizens believe that marketing is the outer circle. Marketing = advertising, it seems. The job of marketing in this circle is to take what the factory/system/boss gives you and hype it, promote it and yell about it....

Men With Pens . . . Or Are They?

Men With Pens . . . Or Are They? | transmedia marketing: storytelling for business, art and education | Scoop.it

Which brings us back to Men With Pens and James Chartrand, whose website was born after she – yes she – discovered that simply by taking a man’s name doors in the work world that remained steadfastly shut to her as a woman, suddenly opened. Like Patricia O’Brien, she didn’t do a single thing differently. Not one. As you can read here, the reality stayed the same, the only thing that changed was her name. And that alone, in and of itself, changed the world’s perception of everything she did.

Why? Because the stories we tell ourselves about how the world works are what create the reality we see. It’s eye opening, isn’t it? Not to mention a little scary.

It’s also why writers are the most powerful people on earth. The stories we write have the ability to change how others view the world, themselves, and what they do about it. The power of story is yours, use it wisely.

The Moral of the Story

There are several surprises about stories. The first is that we spend a great deal of time in fictional worlds, whether in daydreams, novels, confabulations or life narratives. When all is tallied up, the decades we spend in the realm of fantasy outstrip the time we spend in the real world. As Gottschall puts it, “Neverland is our evolutionary niche, our special habitat.”

A second surprise: The dominant themes of story aren’t what we might assume them to be. Consider the plotlines found in children’s playtime, daydreams and novels. The narratives can’t be explained away as escapism to a more blissful reality. If that were their purpose, they would contain more pleasure. Instead, they’re horrorscapes. They bubble with conflict and struggle. The plots are missing all the real-life boring bits, and what remains is an unrealistically dense collection of trouble. Trouble, Gottschall argues, is the universal grammar of stories.

Storytelling – big-S and small-s

When we talk about story and the Zahmoo story-bank, some people think that it’s only for Hollywood-style big-S storytelling – all the complexities of three-act structure, the Hero’s Journey pattern, character-arc and the rest. And yes, it’s true that you can use Zahmoo to support that kind of storytelling. Yet its real purpose is to support small-s storytelling – the small everyday stories that matter so much to families, to communities and to business.

Those small stories do have a specific structure of their own, with specific content:
