Anodyne Pirate Bay Promo Post-mortem.

Anodyne Pirate Bay Promo Post-mortem. | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

Time to answer the question: “Was that Pirate Bay Promo useful at all?"

The promo was a big picture of Anodyne on thepiratebay.se ‘s front page linking to http://www.anodynegame.com/tpb.html .

So was it useful? Or did no one pay for it and now we have devalued our game completely?

First, it cost $7 to do the promo, all $7 of which were for paying our hosting provider for bandwidth, Nearlyfreespeech.net. There were no other costs.

Justin Nalepa's insight:

A look at how two Indie Game developers used The Pirate Bay as a means of marketing their game. Also includes great statistics and data on what they did and how it changed their sales.

How do you get into transmedia?

How do you get into transmedia? | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

We’re just at the beginning of transmedia as an industry.  The term itself is controversial and problematic (that’s a whole other post.)  So what there means is that there aren’t a whole of vacant jobs out there looking for somebody who does or is interested in transmedia.  You sort of have to make them yourself, and then find other like-minded people and keep working together.

Justin Nalepa's insight:

Some words of wisdom from Jay Bushman on getting involved in the emerging world of transmedia.

Out with the Old, in with the New (Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013)

Out with the Old, in with the New (Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013) | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

Let’s face it, 2012 was a rough year, from fires to floods, to hurricanes, mass shootings, tense elections, economic uncertainty and “Call me Maybe” playing on every radio station,  across the U.S. I think I can officially say it was a pretty sucky year on many levels. And Canada, I’m going to demand an official apology for Carly Rae Jepsen, you have one year to meet my terms and conditions.

But aside from bad music, national disasters and a horrible job market. this year did give hope to many of us in the transmedia community, we had a few stumbles here and there, but the overall feeling is one of hope, and dammit, hope is all we need to get 2013 started. So here it is, my (un) official list of some awesome transmedia stuff that happened this year.

Ouch! Sony's PS4 will lose the console war with its lame video-streaming strategy (Wired UK)

Ouch! Sony's PS4 will lose the console war with its lame video-streaming strategy (Wired UK) | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it
Sony's PS4 launch did not show any kind of streaming-video strategy aside from the obligatory nod to Netflix. And thus it sealed its fate.

Congratulations, Sony, you just lost the console war.

Sony held reporters hostage for two hours Wednesday as it unveiled a new PlayStation controller, made a lot of promises about the PlayStation 4 and showed all the demos in the world. What it didn't show us, aside from an actual PlayStation 4, is any kind of streaming-video strategy aside from the obligatory nod to Netflix. And thus it sealed its fate. There simply is no way Sony can compete with Microsoft without streaming video.

Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, told the assembled press, "The living room is no longer the center of the console ecosystem, the gamer is." Sony wants games to go with you everywhere. That's a smart move, but no matter how you spin it, the PlayStation must be part of the living room if it is to have any hope of taking on the Xbox 360 - and any future consoles coming out of Redmond..."

Justin Nalepa's insight:

I have a lot of respect for Sony, but they've been struggling out of the gate with their consoles and handhelds for a while now.

Digital Gap: Why Aren't Moviemakers Learning Narrative From Videogames and the Web?

Digital Gap: Why Aren't Moviemakers Learning Narrative From Videogames and the Web? | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it
Analysis: In the decade since "The Matrix," film narratives have become more conventional and directors are more interested in mimicking classical cinema than charting film's future
Justin Nalepa's insight:

I agree that moviemakers aren't pushing the narrative form as much anymore. Even in video games I find the same kind of lull in storytelling has been around until recently. One great example in experimental storytelling is the mobile game from Super Brother's "Sword & Sworcery" EP http://www.swordandsworcery.com/

I'm much more hopeful with interactive films and convergent media, as there have been some very inspiring projects within the last few years including this past year's FWA site of year, Bear 71: http://bear71.nfb.ca/#/bear71

Startup Weekend is a global network of passionate leaders and entrepreneurs on a mission to inspire, educate, and empower individuals, teams and communities. Come share ideas, form teams, and launch startups.
Justin Nalepa's insight:

Love Jen's idea of approaching documentary storytelling through transmedia:

"I think documentary storytellers in particular serve their projects best when they consider those networks of human beings formerly known as “audiences” before choosing not just what story to tell next, but how best to tell it. By pulling from many traditions– film, user experience and product design, journalism, entrepreneurship, education, grassroots advocacy campaigns, gaming, exhibition, and the old-fashioned building of human networks and social capital – we open ourselves up to true innovation in the form of documentary, and increase the possibility of having the stories that we put our hearts and souls into producing enable real and measurable impact in the world around us."
