David Attenborough, the journalist behind many beloved nature documentaries including the Planet Earth series, is going fully next-gen for one of his upcoming projects. It's a movie called Conquest of the Skies, and unlike any of Attenborough's previous work, it's being made for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, director John Morris told the website realscreen.

David Cage can be infuriating.

 

As someone who studied film but now writes about videogames, I've partly relied on him—one of the most outspoken advocates of merging cinema with games—to discuss the potential in bringing cinematography, and other cinematic techniques, into games. He has helped to define what the term "cinematic" means in videogames since sharing his vision for his 2005 game Indigo Prophecy, which he's admitted was heavily influenced by the cinematic storytelling techniques of 2000's Shenmue. I, and many others, have been ensnared by Cage's ideas, and have been waiting for him to push them further, to find a seamless blend of cinema and game that takes us down new paths.

What The Heck Is Oculus Rift? A Guide To Facebook's $2 Billion Deal

Yesterday, Facebook bought a virtual reality company called Oculus VR. Shortly afterward, the internet exploded.
Justin Nalepa's insight:

Very interesting move by FB to acquire VR company, Oculus. The outcome of this deal and what it means for the future of this amazing technology is still uncertain, but we can only hope this improves the possibility that it becomes a more accessible thing and not deconstructed for marketing purposes.

Traditional 3D viewing may be losing its steam in the home because of a lack of content (and the glasses and all sorts of other reasons), but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll be watching content on flat screens forever. Oculus Rift, the virtual reality headset made for 3D gaming, can also be used for all sorts of other content, including movies. The first video made specifically for the Oculus Rift, is actually a documentary called Zero Point, which is actually about the Oculus Rift device. They have now released an interactive trailer for the film which you can watch online.

Usually moviegoers are instructed to turn off their smartphones while watching a film, but with "App," the new Dutch thriller directed by Bobby Boermans, viewers are encouraged to keep their phones on in order to experience the second-screen content. As the first film made with the intentional inclusion of content on a second, mobile screen, "App" relies on an app, IRIS, which is equipped with sonic technology that triggers additional content during the movie. Though it's not required for viewing the movie, using the second screen adds layers to the big-screen narrative.

"This idea of research positioned as a Secondary rather than a Primary phase of exhibition development, may seem an anathema to traditional museum process but it is fundamental to an audience-centric rather than curator-centric result. By framing the storyworld at a high level first, the process of researching has parameters built from the intended experience of the audience, rather than the subjective or personal inclinations of curators or an pre-determined idea of ‘knowledge that should be imparted’. "

There has been more and more production in the area of interactive nonfiction, and the documentary is one of the main formats that has been developed considerably in recent years, but more theoretical and practical exploration is needed. This project aims to achieve a greater understanding of this new documentary format assuming that our period in history lends itself to a deeper reflection.

The late film critic Roger Ebert once wrote that the art that resonated with him most engaged his empathy and taught him about the lives of others:

 

"I could use such lessons to apply to myself and my relationships with others. They could instruct me about life, love, disease and death, principles and morality, humor and tragedy. They might make my life more deep, full and rewarding."

 

I can't help but delight in using his words in reference to ALZ.

As a relative newbie to transmedia, I’ve been feeling psyched about the possibilities, particularly when it comes to storytelling for non-profits. Think of the possibilities for engaging donors and volunteers, bringing organizations’ missions to life in a visceral way.

But when a friend of mine shared my obsession with her 17-year-old daughter, this was her response:

“Transmedia is a word for old people.”

Love the comment posted below the article: "The word represents an attack on the institutional tendency to retain control and ownership of cultural vitality... I think your friend's daughter is absolutely right and only slightly wrong because transmedia is another word for power, and sharing control of culture is not the primary objective of the folks who are presently in control of the definition of transmedia."

Interestingly, not every young person lives the way the author's friend's daughter suggested. And not every old person needs a word to describe this practice.

Praise the sun! The first pages of Dark Souls 2: Into the Light – a free, digital prequel comic book based on the deadly From Software franchise – are now available for fans to read on the official Dark Souls 2 Facebook page. Dark Souls 2 publisher Namco Bandai promises two new pages of the comic will be released each week until March 14.

Interesting expansion from the cult-hit video game Dark Souls.  The game has a great community following and it's interesting how the developers have embraced this relationship by bringing it to the PC after feedback from fans. It's a game that really engulfs its gamers in a simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating way. Dark Souls 2 will be released on consoles in North America on March 11th and April 25th on the PC.

"There’s a lot we don’t know about our possible futures, but one thing we do: it’s got a software glitch in it, in the voicemail system, which is sending their voicemails back to our time. As these futurismo objects we call chronofacts. Huh. Weird.

 

So we Coasters are trying to get these voicemails found and decoded, and trying to get people to listen to them and make sense of them. As many as we can, before this Chronofall ends (late April 2014)."

"The software system of the future has sprung a space-time leak. But since it's only in their voicemail storage, it takes them decades to get around to fixing it. Meanwhile, we get to listen to the messages that people leave for each other in the years 2020 to 2065 - by turns banal, mysterious, and terrifying.

 

Welcome to FutureCoast, a playful yet serious collaborative storytelling project about possibly climate changed futures. At FutureCoast.org, participants listen to these voicemails and speculate about the futures they must come from.

 

At FutureVoices.net, people take on the creative challenge of recording voicemails that truly seem to have leaked from our futures.

There's more, including a nationwide "chronofact recovery effort" (geocaching). The project, done in collaboration with Columbia University, builds on creator Ken Eklund's successes with World Without Oil. Eklund and Sara Thacher (The Jejune Institute) invite you to listen to your futures..."
