25 Things You Should Know About Transmedia Storytelling

25 Things You Should Know About Transmedia Storytelling | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

Let’s get this out of the way, now — this, like many/most of my other lists, could easily be called “25 Things I Think About Transmedia.” It does not attempt to purport concrete truths but rather, the things I believe about the subject at hand. I am something of an acolyte and practitioner in the transmedia cult, and sometimes give talks on the subject (as I will be doing next week in Los Angeles).

So, here I am, putting my transmedia ducks in a row.

daqri Blog » Principles and Practice of Augmented Reality | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

Augmented reality is as broad and powerful a concept as the idea of connectivity, and comes in as many flavors. It is visible through varying devices, available across a wide spectrum of potency, and utilizable in an unlimited variety of applications. I’ve found that the more time I spend thinking about AR, the more I’ve begun to see potential uses for it everywhere.

Justin Nalepa: A fantastic article on what Augmented Reality is and it's potential in the near future.

Is Transmedia Storytelling the New Digital Marketing?

Is Transmedia Storytelling the New Digital Marketing? | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it
Through social media, website comments, live chats, and other methods, users can have a conversation with you around the content. It’s no longer about broadcasting your message. It’s no longer about telling your story and hoping people get it. To sum up these changes:

1. How: adoption and usage of multiple/simultaneous devices by users has prompted the need for a consistent experience. Marketers must now deliver their message and information across these device families.

2. Why: digital technologies like web, social media, text messaging, etc. have enabled bi-directional conversation. As more and more users adopt these technologies into their lives, they expect the same thing of companies. No interaction? No customer.

Adventures in Transmedia

Adventures in Transmedia | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

Leveraging the individual strengths of multiple storytelling platforms, transmedia builds a storyworld meant to engage and involve its audience and delivers an informative, entertaining experience.

In transmedia, also known as multi-platform storytelling, different platforms—websites, radio broadcasts, videos, television series, books, graphic novels, social media tools, images, advertisements, posters, newspaper articles, text messages, e-mails, live events, and phone calls—contribute to the telling of a story. Each form of media is used because its specific attributes add to a narrative superstructure called the story world.

Justin Nalepa: A good well-rounded article about Transmedia production and its current state in the sociosphere.

The Hobbit's Unexpected Journey Into Magical E-Books

The Hobbit's Unexpected Journey Into Magical E-Books | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it
An unlikely band comes together to achieve a common goal. A writhing sequence of events beset with bloody struggles, magical moments, and difficult obstacles overcome.

The results are an unabashedly big marketing push for the first Hobbit film, with five different titles that range from the "Movie Storybook" to the "World of Hobbits." You can be sure these books, coming with the blessing of so many of the parties busily involved in the Peter Jackson film effort, are going to be exciting to read--jammed with interactive maps, puzzles, and other background data that one can imagine Tolkien himself appreciating.

Pretty Damn Cool. A One-Stop, Web-Based Shop For Comic Book Publishing

Pretty Damn Cool. A One-Stop, Web-Based Shop For Comic Book Publishing | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

As Adrian Tomine has pointed out, the one-time subculture of comics and graphic novels has migrated into the mainstream over the past decade. The marketplace for visual stories might be booming, but until recently, graphic offerings on e-reader platforms were fairly limited. Either because of low-resolution screens or poor options for self-publishing to digital stores, graphic novelists just weren’t very well-read on Kindles or iPads.

Graphicly, a small three-year-old startup, aims to change that. Originally, the company’s mission was to become an “iTunes for comics” marketplace, letting authors and publishing houses offer titles to readers for purchase via a dedicated app. But a recent TechCrunch interview with CEO Micah Baldwin revealed that the company is pivoting away from being a marketplace to focus on supporting the self-publishing ecosystem for visual stories....

Earth’s Nervous System: Looking At Humanity Through Big Data

Earth’s Nervous System: Looking At Humanity Through Big Data | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

In his latest book, The Human Face of Big Data, photographer and co-author Rick Smolan looks at what vast amounts of real time data says about us, how it makes our lives better, and scarier.

• Every two days, mankind creates as much information as it did from the dawn of civilization until 2003.

• The amount of information that an average person is exposed to in a day is the same as a person from the 15th century was exposed to in his lifetime.

• The amount of information generated during the first day of a baby’s life today is equivalent to 70 times the information contained in the Library of Congress.

And you wonder why you’re exhausted?

How Brands Build Transmedia Storyworlds - @houston_howard | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it
We use a comprehensive campaign approach, which we’ve coined 360° Storyweaving. An optimum 360° Storyweaving Campaign includes three distinct phases:

The CREATION Phase, where we create and design the storyworld and story components around an original concept;

The IMMERSION Phase, where we design and plan strategy on how to immerse the audience further into the storyworld through thematic merchandising and media blurring;

The COMMUNITY Phase, where we build communities through online engagement and interactivity as well as implement social outreach, which springs from the original purpose and theme of the project.

DOHA, Qatar -- Going to film school and then spending years trying to make a film is a waste of storytelling time.

According to the panel, the digital age amid a growing opportunity to make material available across multi-platforms such as smart phones and tablets can negate the need for old school methods of content creation and distribution.

Tousi said there are three drivers of change in the digital world - demographic shifts, a reshaped global power structure and disruptive innovation.
