Resurrecting Multimedia from the mire of Transmedia - Journal - mikejones.tv | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

"Words come and go, in and out of fashion. And when the topics of discussion are screen-production, screen-media, technology and narrative, words can fall out of fashion very quickly.

Even those words that begin with clear intentions and a desire to be useful descriptors, can quickly be hijacked and malformed into contestants for the ongoing game of buzzword bingo. ‘Transmedia’ is just such a word. With the term ‘Trans’ simply meaning ‘to move’, the notion of Transmedia as “narratives that move across different media-forms”, it’s a perfectly apt description."

An interesting approach ... which can also be considered in the opposite direction from another interesting post of Mediastorm (I Hate ‘Multimedia’ http://bit.ly/12pTiRl)

Again, the words are struggling to chase the technological and social innovations.

Jason Brush and Michel Reilhac Discuss the Second Screen and New Interactive Cinema at SXSW | Filmmaker Magazine

Jason Brush and Michel Reilhac Discuss the Second Screen and New Interactive Cinema at SXSW | Filmmaker Magazine | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it
Two of the events I was most looking forward to seeing this year at SXSW Interactive were Jason Brush’s talk, Filmmaking as User Experience and Michel Reilhac’s “Meet the Insiders” panel, “Storytelling + Interactive.” Brush teaches at UCLA’s Department of Film, Television and Visual Media and is Executive Vice President of Creative & UX at POSSIBLE. Reilhac, who I have written about before at Filmmaker, is an independent transmedia director, story writer and consultant, and one of the most passionate and eloquent voices for new forms of interactive storytelling.
Justin Nalepa's insight:

A conversation about the second screen and the new ways in which filmmakers can experiment with the cinematic form.

Tribeca Hacks : Creating Interactive Stories with Zeega

Tribeca Hacks <Cambridge>: Creating Interactive Stories with Zeega | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

Our first Tribeca Hacks event took place in the Zeega headquarters in Cambridge, MA this past Saturday.

We had fifteen projects participating, ready to experiment with the cloud-based HTML5 platform. We had conducted a couple of Google Hangouts with everyone in advance to make sure all their assets were uploaded and they were ready to create their Zeega stories on the day. Ahmed Kabil from Zeega also took time to Skype with each participant individually to make sure they felt prepared and to answer any questions about the Zeega platform.

Justin Nalepa's insight:

Also definitely worth checking out are the projects that emerged from this event:

The Carp and The Seagull

The Carp and The Seagull | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

The Carp and the Seagull is an interactive short film about one man's encounter with the spirit world and his fall from grace. It is a user driven narrative that tells a single story through the prism of two connected spaces. One space is the natural world and the other is the spirit or nether world.

The story is told in a stripped down polygonal style that reflects the emotional, spiritual states of the characters. High density, smooth polygon vertices indicate oneness with the world while distorted, non-uniform shapes show unease within the characters.

Directed by Evan Boehm at Nexus Interactive Arts, the film is an experiment in space and narrative using the latest in web technology. The film brings together 3D character modeling, rigging and animation with HTML5 and WebGL THREE.js technologies.

Is Transmedia Storytelling the New Digital Marketing?

Is Transmedia Storytelling the New Digital Marketing? | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it
Through social media, website comments, live chats, and other methods, users can have a conversation with you around the content. It’s no longer about broadcasting your message. It’s no longer about telling your story and hoping people get it. To sum up these changes:

1. How: adoption and usage of multiple/simultaneous devices by users has prompted the need for a consistent experience. Marketers must now deliver their message and information across these device families.

2. Why: digital technologies like web, social media, text messaging, etc. have enabled bi-directional conversation. As more and more users adopt these technologies into their lives, they expect the same thing of companies. No interaction? No customer.

Ramen Party on Indiegogo

Ramen Party on Indiegogo | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

Ramen Party represents a way to get kids excited about food by allowing them to combine ingredients in the same way that a DJ combines music. By crossing these two realms, we believe that we can help kids explore different foods and food combinations in a way that is fresh, fun, and easily accessible.

Justin Nalepa's insight:

As part of phase one of their transmedia project Ramen Party, creators Lillian Chan, John Poon and Michael Mak are looking to launch an interactive storybook app, ebook series and a Ramen Party website.

MoMA | Video Games: 14 in the Collection, for Starters

MoMA | Video Games: 14 in the Collection, for Starters | Transmedia Landscapes | Scoop.it

Are video games art? They sure are, but they are also design, and a design approach is what we chose for this new foray into this universe. The games are selected as outstanding examples of interaction design—a field that MoMA has already explored and collected extensively, and one of the most important and oft-discussed expressions of contemporary design creativity. Our criteria, therefore, emphasize not only the visual quality and aesthetic experience of each game, but also the many other aspects—from the elegance of the code to the design of the player’s behavior—that pertain to interaction design.

In order to develop an even stronger curatorial stance, over the past year and a half we have sought the advice of scholars, digital conservation and legal experts, historians, and critics, all of whom helped us refine not only the criteria and the wish list, but also the issues of acquisition, display, and conservation of digital artifacts that are made even more complex by the games’ interactive nature. This acquisition allows the Museum to study, preserve, and exhibit video games as part of its Architecture and Design collection.
