Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners

Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners | Smart Media | Scoop.it
While acknowledging that the whole concept of self-determination – or ‘Google
learning’ as it has been called, pejoratively, in certain circles – is fraught with the potential for missing the point, being distracted into rabbit warrens or just getting bad information, we would like to emphasise that this is only a potential.

===> Any learning theory is only as good as the way in which it is applied and worked through, and we have seen it produce highly successful results where correctly applied, in the right circumstances. <===

Watch this space for chapter and verse, as we will soon be publishing case studies of several recent programmes that feature high levels of learner self-direction.

Learners are changing, learning is changing – and heutagogy can give important clues about rebalancing the burden of responsibilities and permissions in an always-on, networked, instructorless, post-course world.

Most US Parents Monitor Kids' Online Activity Closely - eMarketer | Smart Media | Scoop.it
Most US children and teens under 18 have access to some sort of digital device. Some 95% of parents reported they monitor their children's online at least somewhat closely.
Karen B Wehner's insight:

Only 14% of parents rated offline apps and mobile/video games as more harmful than beneficial, but 43% feel that social media accounts are nothing but trouble waiting to happen.

"I said, 'You can't do math from left to right,' " Ms. Bonds said.

She soon found out that, actually, he could.''

Understanding Empathy Part 4

Understanding Empathy Part 4 | Smart Media | Scoop.it

What does it take to become empathic? Is there a part of the brain that needs to be switched on? Some way of living that is different to a non-empathic way? According to Krznaric in his book "A handbook for revolution.Empathy", the first habit of being an empathic person is in fact to switch on our empathic brain. We do this by embracing a more sophisticated understanding of human nature.

He argues that the capacity to empathise is part of our genetic inheritance, part of our evolutionary roots. He also suggests that empathy can be expanded throughout our lives. In other words, developing empathy is an ongoing process, something we keep working on throughout our lives. It's never too late to learn it.
