Chairlift’s “Met Before” and Other “Choose Your Own Adventure” Music Videos

Chairlift’s “Met Before” and Other “Choose Your Own Adventure” Music Videos | Smart Media | Scoop.it

"As most storytellers wish to have their primary narrative kept “pure,” transmedia extensions can allow for fan interactivity. Some media is inherently built for interactive storytelling, such as video games or online content. Others, such as music, can be difficult to structure in such a manner. However, musicians have found a new way to involve their listeners: interactive music videos."

Most US children and teens under 18 have access to some sort of digital device. Karen B Wehner's insight:

Only 14% of parents rated offline apps and mobile/video games as more harmful than beneficial, but 43% feel that social media accounts are nothing but trouble waiting to happen.

Lexile leveled current events, lesson plans, quizzes, assessments
Karen B Wehner's insight:

Makes a lot of sense: ''The early arrival of wintry weather in the Midwest gave Grewing an opening to test out a virtual class day at St. Cloud Cathedral high school in central Minnesota. She is having students whip out laptops or iPads and work from home. After a successful test run, Grewing declared that the students' cherished snow days are a thing of the past, at least at Cathedral.''

Disney's upcoming animated flick gets a game tie-in made entirely in Singapore by Gumi Asia.
Karen B Wehner's insight:

Looks like the mechanic is pretty mainstream (match-three riff), but Disney's in good cinematic company, launching and app before the film.

Just have to wonder how much synergy there actually is, however, between the experience of playing a basic - albeit brand-skinned - app, however, and the full-blown narrative experience of watching a film?

From the mag: Can Netflix drive consumer products sales? | Smart Media | Scoop.it
Netflix now has more subscribers in the US than HBO, but whether or not the SVOD leader has the power to drive consumer products sales like traditional kidnets do is still the big question - especially in the absence of viewership data.
Karen B Wehner's insight:

In principle, I don't  see why not. My own kids, for example, watch Netflix SVOD almost exclusively these days. Will be interesting to see this one unfold.

Understanding Empathy Part 4

Understanding Empathy Part 4 | Smart Media | Scoop.it

What does it take to become empathic? Is there a part of the brain that needs to be switched on? Some way of living that is different to a non-empathic way? According to Krznaric in his book "A handbook for revolution.Empathy", the first habit of being an empathic person is in fact to switch on our empathic brain. We do this by embracing a more sophisticated understanding of human nature.

He argues that the capacity to empathise is part of our genetic inheritance, part of our evolutionary roots. He also suggests that empathy can be expanded throughout our lives. In other words, developing empathy is an ongoing process, something we keep working on throughout our lives. It's never too late to learn it.

How One Teacher Changed for the Good of Her Students

Author and educator Pernille Ripp shares the steps she took to help her students regain a love of learning.
Karen B Wehner's insight:

Recognizing a problem is the first step in solving it:

''How do we make children hate school so much? I now teach 5th grade, and by the time they reach me, certain subjects have already landed on their top 10 list of most dreadful things to do. Math tends to top the chart, but social studies usually is close behind, and some even hate reading (but may read many books outside of school).''

Why stories sell and feature lists don't | Smart Media | Scoop.it
Keith Queensbury of Johns Hopkins conducted an analysis of 108 Super Bowl adverts. He found that, ‘regardless of the content of the ad, the structure of that content predicted its success.’ In other words, telling a story was better than listing features (or anything else for that matter).
