Most US Parents Monitor Kids' Online Activity Closely - eMarketer

Most US Parents Monitor Kids' Online Activity Closely - eMarketer | Smart Media | Scoop.it
Most US children and teens under 18 have access to some sort of digital device. Though these digital natives are properly tech-savvy, it doesn't mean parents aren't keeping an eye on their online activities. Some 95% of parents reported they monitor their children's online at least somewhat closely.
Karen B Wehner's insight:

Only 14% of parents rated offline apps and mobile/video games as more harmful than beneficial, but 43% feel that social media accounts are nothing but trouble waiting to happen.

2011 – The Year’s Best Digital Books for Kids – 31 Five-Star iPad Apps Not to be Missed | The Digital Media Diet

2011 – The Year’s Best Digital Books for Kids – 31 Five-Star iPad Apps Not to be Missed | The Digital Media Diet | Smart Media | Scoop.it

At Digital-Storytime.com, we are celebrating our first birthday! We’d like to pay tribute to last year’s very best picture book apps for the iPad and the developers who made these reading experiences possible.

For the final post in our blog, I want to highlight the 31 books to receive a perfect 5-Star review on our site. With over 400 reviews, that means these apps are the cream of the crop, representing fewer than 10% of all the titles we’ve seen. We have awarded all of these developers our “Digital Storytime Star” for overall merit.

Since there are 31 days in January, we will be celebrating these wonderful books, one each day during the next month. Join us on our Facebook page for all the festivities to honor the 27 developers who’ve produced these fine apps for children.

This list is in order from oldest review to newest. The first few were reviewed in the very last days of 2010 but all were hits in 2011. And who knows what 2012 will bring?

The Social Media Monthly, was named on Tuesday, December 5th, 2011 as one of the hottest magazine launches of 2011 by MIN, an organization that reports on the publishing industry, and Samir “Mr. Magazine” Husni. Of the more than eight hundred new magazine launches over the last twelve months, The Social Media Monthly was recognized among a select group of fifteen as this year’s hottest.

The December issue features a cover design by graphic design artist Jonathan Lamb. The cover portrays a family peering into a store window during the holidays excited by all the new social media toys on display. Feature articles include a review of the Occupy Wall Street protests and how the loosely knit organization leveraged social media between groups of protestors around the world written by Adriel Hampton, as well an in-depth look at the growing children’s app market for smartphones and tablets written by Julie Brannon.

Lego Systems Inc. has unveiled Lego Fusion, a play experience that combines traditional Lego brick play with app-based mobile games for kids ages 7 and up.

Karen B Wehner's insight:

Though initially surprised to see Lego so late to this space, it seems they used the time to build a more truly two-way digital/real-world play path, vs most others, in which one play form feels tacked onto the other. Can't wait to try!

Great Book Apps Beyond Disney, Dora and Dr. Seuss

Great Book Apps Beyond Disney, Dora and Dr. Seuss | Smart Media | Scoop.it

Are you missing some of the best apps for kids?

With the tens of thousands of storybook apps in the App Store, it’s no wonder the Top 50 list is usually filled with familiar favorites like Disney, Dora and Dr. Seuss. But some of the most innovative and unique book apps for kids are being created by independent developers, and parents can find these gems in Digital Storytime’s “Top 10” lists.

“We created ‘Top 10’ lists to help parents and teachers find the best book apps based on their different needs,” says Carisa Kluver of Digital Storytime. Whether parents are looking for the most unique, the best stories for bedtime, the most original, or most interactive, we’ve put together our lists after reviewing over 500 of the top storybook apps available in the App Store.”

“Storybook apps have opened up a whole new world for my son, who is a reluctant reader,” said Karen Robertson, mother of two and author who turned her children’s book into an app. “When my son picked up the iPad for the first time and chose storybook apps over games, I knew digital books were something special.”

“Story Book apps incorporate the senses of sight, sound and touch with reading which brings stories to life in a whole new way,” adds Carisa. “For example, the award winning book app, 'Treasure Kai and the Lost Gold of Shark Island' uses touch in a unique way to drive the story forward, having kids tap treasure chests to reveal adventure stories as they try to discover which one hides the gold. It’s a twist on the choose-your-adventure stories I used to love as a child, and with over 13,000 paths to the treasure, it’s got a fun game feel as well.” http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/treasure-kai-lost-gold-shark/id418289114?mt=8

“'A Fine Musician' uses sound in an enchanting way. Kids are showered with onomatopoeic words and the sounds of musical instruments as they journey through the city with a musician who’s creating a one-man band." http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/a-fine-musician/id406573790?mt=8

"'And The Strange & Wonderful World of Ants,' is a truly phenomenal example of an educational book app. It’s a beautiful and quirky science app for kids that uses visual interactivity I haven’t seen in a book before. And it offers a unique adjustable reading, level making it appealing to wide range of children,” she adds. http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-strange-wonderful-world/id404605416?mt=8
