"Essential tips from the transmedia producer [Jay Bushman] of online video phenomenon The Lizzie Bennet Diaries!"

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, March 25, 1:56 PM

Bushman's 3 keys is a great article because there is compelling psychology underlying all of them.  My favorite of Bushman's three keys are 2 and 3.  Key 2 is setting and keeping expectations.  However innovative your project, he speaks to the importance of creating rhythms and patterns so the audience can develop expectations.  From a neuro-cognitive perspective, the brain seeks patterns and derives pleasure and comfort from finding a structure and therefore can anticipate with pleasure new developments rather than feel frustrated.  In Key 3, Bushman says trust your team.  We often see articles about how you can't control your audience, but few about the same for the internal team.  Controlling people takes a lot of effort and at the end, nobody's happy.  Key 3 indicates how well Bushman has inspired his people and established team purpose and affiliation so that they can further the project with autonomy, increasing, no doubt, their own emotional investment it the characters and the project's success.  I would argue that right after having a good story comes having a good leader to achieve success.

Between the Lines: Storytelling in the New Landscape - i-Docs | Transmedia is the Name of the Game | Scoop.it

"This session (...) looked at the relationship between technology and storytelling, it’s function within the creation of non-linear narratives and the continued role of “old” storytelling telling methods." I-Docs

"Each technological change in filmmaking has influenced the way stories are crafted. Adapting to these new technologies has repeatedly been presented as a revolutionary new way of storytelling. The first films shot with handheld cameras allowed unprecedented access to events, and later, digital cameras made it cheaper to produce films. Now, with opportunities offered by new media, stories can be told in a non-linear fashion through different platforms, or made interactive. Do these new technologies truly revolutionize the way we document the world, or do they merely change the relationship between the maker and the viewer? Do the old methods of storytelling still apply to interactive or non-linear documentaries?

MediaCity Finland's Staffans talks co-creation with Carri Bugbee, who brought Mad Men's Peggy Olson to life on Twitter

'...One of the members of my discussion panel was Carri Bugbee, a social media marketing exec from Portland, Oregon. Her trackrecord includes being one of the very first to explore the power of Twitter by creating the — unofficial — @peggyolson persona to intersync with the narratives of the hit series Mad Men. She’s experienced the good sides – an overwhelming positive response from show fans and other co-creators – and the bad side – getting shut down by Twitter within a couple of days (yet later reinstated). I asked her how important will co-creating fans be for television in the future. Her reply merits a massive quote!

I feel like collaboration with fans is the ultimate form of social TV. Web 2.0 brought about social media, which allows web users to interact with other people and content. Merging social media with TV (and film) means fans will (or should) be able to interact with and sometimes even influence outcomes for TV and movie content. That could be as basic as sharing favorite movie lines with friends on their social networks or as complicated as influencing the direction of a character or story arc online....'

Jen Begeal's insight:

I have always had a secret love afair with Clue, and admittedly to this day if it comes on TV while I'm home, I will stop channel surfing to watch it from wherever I am in the story. Coming from a place now with a better understanding of film distribution, financing, production and telling stories across-platforms I wonder what Clue would be like if made today. Would audiences be asked or allowed to interact through second screen devices, or pick and choose the ending of their choice? The possibilities today would be endless with a story that had such great acting talent, writing and directing. Maybe we need to look back on these "cult classics" and learn from the concepts developed by these directors and incorporate some of their visions into our own projects.

Transmedia Companies Want 'Story-Driven' Tech People... Campfire, Social Samba - Dice News

Transmedia Companies Want 'Story-Driven' Tech People... Campfire, Social Samba - Dice News | Transmedia is the Name of the Game | Scoop.it

'The entertainment business is engaged in nothing less than the reinvention of narrative, and the leading edge is something called transmedia.

It’s in this corner of storytelling that a next wave of developers, gamers, filmmakers, writers and composers are creating immersive story-telling experiences that employ a variety of media, delivered across platforms. But here, “cross platform” means more than just on your console one minute and your smartphone the next. It means on your phone, your PC, your iPod, your TV, in the theater.

Who’s Doing It?

Companies engaged in transmedia can be grouped into three general sectors. First, there are native companies whose focus is original content across mediums. Next are marketing companies who create a wide range of original content around an existing product — think Game of Thrones or Hunger Games. And finally are the tech businesses who create platforms that other people can use to distribute content across mediums....'

Quote "

The fictional story (had to emphasise its fictionality) has its characters setting up their own Facebook pages and interacting with real-life people as well as other character pages of family and friends. Clues are given everyday that unravel the mystery of who’s the captor, what is he (or she) doing to Christina, what’s the motive and other information that will have you on the edge of your seat.

I’ve been playing along for a few days and it’s a never-ending goose chase connecting the captor’s clues, random things in Christina’s room and the backstories of all the characters. It does get messy at times, but it makes for fun entertainment once you get hooked onto the story and realise that you’re slowly living the world Christina and her family are in."
