Critical thinking across multiple modalities

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, December 13, 2014 5:13 PM

Transmedia literacy implies engaging critically in nonlinear narratives of all kinds, from entertainment and branding to journalism.  We build mental models unconsciously, to create a holistic understanding.  In entertainment, we revel in narratives of choice--we can actively pursue and evaluate content based on enjoyment, relevance, and identity.  Many other narratives are more subtle, news, commercial and social stories can be equally immersive and persuasive without our awareness.  Transmedia literacy emphasizes the need for mindful attention to the narrative construction that create larger ideaworlds in our off and online environments.

The Digital Rocking Chair's curator insight, December 14, 2014 4:17 PM

Dr. Pamela Rutledge:  "Transmedia storytelling goes beyond the need to segment such skills as search and collaboration.  It demands the ability to recognize, understand, and interact with narrative threads across multiple modalities, not just within them."

Debbie Elicksen 's curator insight, December 21, 2014 11:52 AM

"Mass media producers are scrambling because they can no longer take viewers’ attention for granted.  Audiences have choice and are psychologically and technologically empowered to seek content worth their most valuable asset—attention."

Keep in mind that Twitter has a "13 + " age requirement for an account. That won't keep those of you in high schools from using these great ideas, though! Enjoy.

Michelle Franco's curator insight, December 10, 2014 5:09 PM

Social media sites like Twitter can be seen as distractions, but they can actually be helpful in education. This short yet informative source simply lists several uses that Twitter provides to help educate an individual.

Twitter is a form of communication and can be used to hold after class discussions or allow students to create an online community where they can share what they learned. It is also a place where students can ask questions regarding course materials. Using hash tags on Twitter can make it easy for students to focus on specific discussions by creating a unique hash tag for a class or assignment. Links can be posted to share online materials or get feedback on a completed work. Teachers and classes are becoming more modern with the advancement of technology. The Internet allows for students and teachers to communicate outside of the classroom, which enables student to work longer and learn more. Incorporating Twitter in education is another form of extra resource or help for a student who is working on an assignment.

Having read the article, I'm not convinced texting can "profoundly impact their success." I think texting has the potential of improving communication for a lot of reasons, and perhaps aid in clarifying some things for students, which might, in turn, influence whether or not they are successful. So I share this because texting might need to be an option for some educators, and it could be a resource worth exploring.
