Great way to deliver digital literacy to kids! - CJ

"Newsgames are a relatively new format for storytelling, spanning the divide between reporting and video games, and gaining more credibility in the journalism world.

Media outlets like The New York Times, CNN and El Pais have experimented with stories where readers become players in a simulated world. In Brazil, Superinteressante, a magazine from the youth department (Núcleo Jovem) of publisher Editora Abril, is making significant strides in the production of newsgames." -Natalia Mazotte

Where Teens Seek Online Privacy Advice | Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project

cynthia jabar's insight:

Transmedia Storytelling & Teens: As teens learn how to manage their digital footprint on their own, Pew research finds "a nationally representative survey of teen internet users shows that, at some point, 70% of them have sought advice from someone else about how to manage their privacy online. When they do seek outside help, teens most often turn to friends, parents or other close family members."

Why Use Transmedia in Early Learning? | U.S. Department of Education

cynthia jabar's insight:

"Why might a transmedia approach have potential educationally? Here are several reasons:

It presents children with multiple entry points to learning. Children can start learning via any one of the individual media, but when these media are interconnected, children will be motivated to explore even more;It enables educators to use individual media for the functions for which they are best suited. For example, games are particularly good problem-solving environments that encourage children to try difficult things without fear of failure; they are not as good as video, however, at presenting more linear and orderly information; andthe rich, fictional worlds of transmedia tend to create a greater level of social interaction that can inspire children to create their own stories and media products and to share them with each other." - DOE

T is for Transmedia… | Transmedia 4 Kids | Scoop.it
cynthia jabar's insight:

Jenkins explains how "transmedia encourages additive comphrension."

'Like any other kind of storytelling, transmedia is something which can be done well or badly. You can be attentive to the possibilities of expanding a story in new directions or you can simply slap a logo on something and pretend like it’s part of the same franchise. Transmedia can be enriching or exploitative, can be motivated by the crudest of economic motives or shaped by the most cutting edge learning science. But, when transmedia is done well, it creates a deeply engaging, immersive experience, which multiplies the number of learning opportunities"
