Why So Many Translators Hate Translation Technology (by Nataly Kelly)

In general, technology should serve to make our lives better. Software can automate manual steps, reducing the human workload. Translation, like most language-related tasks, is complex. Machines have not yet gotten to the point where they can use language the way people can. Translation is, at a minimum, two times more complex than just writing in a language, and it's several layers deeper too.

So, with such complexity, it would seem that every professional translator on earth would be eager to use technology to streamline their work, speed up the translation process, and make their lives better. This is not always the case...

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:

Nataly Kelly shares her opinion why many translators do not embrace translation technology and where the real improvements in translation technology will most benefit professional translators.

Will SDL ever learn the difference between letters and words? (from About Translation blog)

Will SDL ever learn the difference between letters and words? (from About Translation blog) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

I have been using translation memory tools for about twenty years now. More and more, I’ve come to the conclusion that their most useful feature is not the ability to offer fuzzy and perfect matches (useful as they may be), but rather the concordance search, which can suggest previous translations from segments that are not similar enough to the one you are working on to qualify for a fuzzy match.
And this is why I get so annoyed with SDL: they think that if the memory does not contain the word you are looking for, it is useful to show you words that sort of look like it...

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:

In all fairness, this fuzziness feature should be more effective when one searches for long phrases, but I totally agree with the author -- it's almost useless for single words in most languages.

XML translation – part 1: introduction (by Marek Pawelec)

XML translation – part 1: introduction (by Marek Pawelec) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

The XML has a bad reputation amongst translators – quite often it’s being perceived as something complicated and terribly difficult to translate. However, armed with the basic knowledge of the XML file structure and modern translation environment tools it’s actually usually very easy to correctly translate XML. This is the first installment of a three-part series of posts I’m going to write about XML. Part one is a very basic introduction to XML – why and what. Part two will cover XML import in memoQ and part three import in Trados Studio...

memoQ 2014 – first impressions (by Marek Pawelec) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

When I received access to memoQ 2014, I’ve also got a file with a short description of main changes/new features which covers 26 points. Overall there are over seventy new features/improvements in this version, and it’s a huge list. I don’t think there were ever so many new goodies included in a new memoQ release, and I’m using the software since version 3.6. These changes are big and small and I must admit I’m often finding these little ones very helpful. I’ve already tweeted about some of them, but I’ll try to mention them here too...

Marek Pawelec shares his thoughts on the key new features in memoQ 2014: project templates, embedded objects, redesigned Translation tab, updated tag handling commands, termbase improvements, and lists other new features.
