Why So Many Translators Hate Translation Technology (by Nataly Kelly)

In general, technology should serve to make our lives better. Software can automate manual steps, reducing the human workload. Translation, like most language-related tasks, is complex. Machines have not yet gotten to the point where they can use language the way people can. Translation is, at a minimum, two times more complex than just writing in a language, and it's several layers deeper too.

So, with such complexity, it would seem that every professional translator on earth would be eager to use technology to streamline their work, speed up the translation process, and make their lives better. This is not always the case...

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:

Nataly Kelly shares her opinion why many translators do not embrace translation technology and where the real improvements in translation technology will most benefit professional translators.

How to Turn a Style Sheet into a Custom Word Dictionary (from Copyediting.com)

How to Turn a Style Sheet into a Custom Word Dictionary (from Copyediting.com) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

Many industries use special vocabularies (read jargon) encompassing numerous words that Microsoft Word's built-in dictionary doesn't recognize. It can be enough to make Word's spell-check feature almost useless.

You could right-click each of those odd new words as you edit and add them to Word's dictionary, but A) that takes a lot of time, and B) Word will assume that those spellings are legitimate for every document you open. It makes more sense to create a custom dictionary that you can turn on and off only when you're working on a particular document...

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create custom spelling dictionaries of words that will be ignored by Microsoft Word's spell checker.

TransTools: New features in version 3.5 – What Is This Text Symbol tool and updates in Document Cleaner

TransTools: New features in version 3.5 – What Is This Text Symbol tool and updates in Document Cleaner | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

TransTools v.3.5 has been released.

What Is This Text Symbol tool (http://translatortools.net/word-whatisthissymbol.html) is a new addition to TransTools which identifies text symbols in selected text, providing additional information about unknown or confusing symbols through integration with some online resources and Microsoft Word's built-in functionality. This makes it easy for the translator to decide what to do with a symbol – keep it in the translation, remove it, or replace it with something else.

This version also includes several useful updates in Document Cleaner (http://translatortools.net/word-doccleaner.html).
